understanding wireshark output

so i am following a convo that a pc on my lan is having with another pc on the internet. the pc on my lan is playing a game. i am eavesdropping on it through a network tap and my monitoring pc is running wireshark.

My home pc is connecting to an external ip of 216.133.234.156

When i try to traceroute I get this
216.133.234.156 is from United States(US) in region North America

My home pc is happily playing league of legends and running skype at the same time.

but when i do a 'whois' on that ip isuccessfully determine that it is a server in Atlanta,Ga registered to RIOT games. This is what I'd expect since riot games is the publisher of league of legends. I am confused though why the traceroute fails. any ideas?

Tracert and ping use ICMP. Many routers and hosts on the internet block ICMP. Other routers and hosts just do not reply. Its not unusual for a tracert on the internet to not report on the last few steps in the path.

The Linux version of traceroute supports TCP to whatever port you want, usually 80, so it can work in situations where ICMP won't.

Ignore. Windows tracert uses ICMP-only for traceroute. That was new to me. I had only seen UDP-based traceroutes in the past. Pfff.
