I haven't worked for 2 weeks and I'm bored to tear. I riped my computer apart and wiped Windows off the hdd, and since then installed Mint Linux, Ubuntu, and Debian just to kill time. And, today I got a job staring tomorrow morning at 7:30 am to save me from boredom.

Yeah! I'm useful again.

Where do you live? If that's your way of killing time, I know some people that are hiring.

I'm in Victoria Canada, and thanks for the offer.

I wish I could find some place that's hiring. Been out of work since 12/31 and not even temp agencies will place me into menial temp jobs... they say I'm "overqualified."

You don't have to put every accomplishment down on the resume to get the job that you want.

Remove the fat and give them what they are looking for.

I haven't been working since May, started very passively looking in October, and actively looking at the end of December. Now I'm starting to go a bit nuts. Had a couple interviews, one I bungled and the other I was a perfect fit for the job but it was just valet work and the lady was interviewing 8 other people so that is a slim chance I'll get it. I think my applications have gotten a lot stronger since I started so hopefully February will net me more than the 2 callbacks I got last month. With my stronger applications I think have come stronger interview skills so I think I'm guaranteed to land something within the next 3, so long as the cards aren't stacked against me like they were with this valet job (even if you're the perfect candidate, it is basically a toss-up with a mindless job and 8 people applying)

Interesting that you actually bored not working. I haven't worked since i graudated and loving it. If I could afford not to work for the rest of my life, I would not work.

Haha I should just tell them I don't have a resume. These temp jobs pay people $8/hr to file papers for a few days.

Since I actually have work experience and a degree, they told me they can't give me those types of jobs since they're being held for unemployed people with less qualifications.

Yeah, "underqualified" is bullshit. I just hope I'm not in that boat in a few months after I graduate.

If I ended up unemployed, I have all sorts of projects that could use my attention.
Maybe I'm subconsciously keeping them as contingencies

Fucking slacker!

I haven't worked since Dec. 2003.

It was fun for the first couple of weeks...I've NEVER had that much time off to get stuff done, fuck off, relax...after that, I started getting bored. By the time I was off a couple of months, I was trying to find things to do to keep me occupied so I wouldn't be bored to tears...I started going to the community college 2 years ago. Technically in a voc-rehab program to "re-train" me, but more because I was going fucking stir crazy.

I'm not rich enough to travel all the time like I'd prefer, so an occasional weekend at Yosemite gets boring pretty quick, same with a weekend in Monterey, or any destination within an easy drive from here.
School tends to keep me busy enough that I'm rarely bored, although I find that I have trouble getting motivated to do the homework for some of my classes. This semester more than in the past.

Can be tricky if you've recently held several higher level positions. Hard to dumb down titles, and omitting them leaves you with an employment gap.

I've been unemployed since December 03, and I hate how it makes me lazy.

I can find plenty of stupid silly stuff to do - the internet reaches far and wide - but I have developed a tendency not to do more 'useful' things, e.g. catch up on reading, go to the gym, make the house spotless, etc.

I have done a shit ton of networking, couple of job interviews, and even a one-time consulting gig - but man this economy sucks. I work as an analytical chemist and there is probably only like 10,000 of us unemployed on the east coast.

Woo hoo.

My wife had this same problem - she tweaked her resume according to the company she was applying to, conveniently leaving off of masters when it didn't help her cause. You might want to do the same. The management in small companies have a terrible fear of being replaced, so they shred resumes at will.

Another thing to think about in regards to being overqualified, is that a company may not want to hire you for a lower position if they think that you are just biding your time and are still hunting down a job somewhere for a more appropriate position for you level. Hiring people is an expensive process and a company doesn't want to get suckered into doing it more often than necessary.

Using myself for an example, I have ~ ten years of experience as an analytical chemist and project manager experience. Even if I de-emphasized things on my resume, a hiring manager at McDonald's (or generic low wage job) would probably look at it and just think - absolutely correctly - that I will jump ship as soon as a position in my industry is available. Who is going to hire somebody that will just quit at their best possible convenience?

If I had known, we were hiring a few weeks back. Although maybe we hired you, I wouldn't know?

Exactly.

I try to convey this to my boss but he seems to think it's a good idea to offer someone with at least 2 years Sys Admin, VMware, and SAN experience $50k or less because of the economy.
