But at this level it isn't something you can train and only comes from years of actually doing it at that level. I'm talking about storage guys that can walk into any data center and know exactly what is going on and how to make it better, network guys that can walk into any company and immediately know what's going on and the direction to go, vmware guys that can do setup a 5000 VM environment in a week without thinking about it. You can't train to that level.

Absolutely correct. You really can't just hire a fresh college grad and let him/her run with it after a few weeks of training. Even a very experienced guy will be able to make only a limited contribution for quite some time after hire.

I work for a software development company that's hiring programmers and DBAs like crazy. But it's going through tremendous growing pains and is honestly not a great company to work for, though work is work.

I also just got contacted by my old recruitment firm, no doubt because they've got positions they want to fill. I'm getting some more certs under my belt in the coming months so I can hopefully advance up the IT ladder in these apparent good times for IT professionals.

Plumber wanted: must have experience in 110V electric wiring, carpet laying, wood framing, roofing, masonry & concrete.

HTTP, scripting and unix? Those requirements are actually pretty loose - anybody that wants to work at my company needs all of those and more, otherwise they'd be useless.

I think part of the problem is that less companies want to train anymore. I don't mean train someone new to take over a senior role, but train existing entry or intermediate level employees. They expect you to be able to come in and run in a short period of time.

The senior people will eventually leave and the employers go out to look for a replacement since they didn't train an replacement. The others who have been working for a long time might not have all the experience to really take over a senior position.

I've been saying this for years. There's a huge shortage of highly skilled people.

That said, a ton of those job posts are just there because large corporations are required to show a job opening open X number of months before requesting an H1B employee.

I guess I can't blame them... why hire a US worker when you can get someone from India who's practically an indentured servant to the company for a salary 25% less?

My team at my last two companies has struggled to hire a software engineer that hit the bar. The job paid well, and was well advertised...you just had to be good at what you do, which is where most candidates fell flat.
