I think if you get it from a crap sushi place, it will taste like crap. I've had uni had some cheapo places, and it made me want to puke. at more high end places though, its simply delicious

ok, uni is an accquired choice. people would sometimes crack a quail egg on top (0.50 to $1.00 extra).

it looks like mud and has the consistency of mud. I believe it is actually the roe of sea urchin.

I agree. I don't goto crap sushi places myself. Cheap and raw fish don't mix.

Friggin' Todai is just nasty!

As much as I love sushi... I think I'll just stick to the sashimi yellowtail. God, I love that stuff with a passion.

And, at my local sushi place (Shogun in Northridge, CA) I can get eight pieces for $8. Meaning, ordering two orders of the stuff won't put a dent in my wallet. Plus, the slices are pretty damn big...

I always end my sushi dinners with Uni. It has to be fresh - live uni is preferred. If it has a smell (as with any sashimi), it's not fresh and should be avoided as well as most non-japanese-owned sushi restaurants (eg Todai, Sumo. . .)

I'm unwilling to try it due to all the various episodes of iron chef where they more or less flatly say that it is disgusting by itself. I convinced someone else to order it once, and they didn't like it much, plus my negative bias was reinforced when i saw it, because it looks like orange brains.

Uni is soooo good. Really high quality uni has such a great consistency and tastes like butter. I'd be willing to bet that most people here haven't had very high quality fish before....

last weekend on a japanese food show (for those of you in SoCal: ch18, saturday 8:00 pm) they showed how to make an Uni-don - uni over rice. Much more complicated than it sounds and it looked soooo good.

it was uni-don vs bifuteki-don "sea urchin bowl" vs "beefsteak bowl".

Uni won although the beef looked equally as good.

One of my favourites. The first time I tried it, it sort of tasted a bit funky, but I've loved it ever since.

i'd take that bet. seems a lot of people here complain about the funk, but it just shows bad quality fish.

Volume eating of sushi does not prove you are not noob. There's more to sushi than Tuna and Salmon. Also if the sushi restaurant you go to offers "Spicy Tuna Roll" or "California Roll" there is a high chance you are a sushi noob. Finally if the sushi restaurant you go to is run by non-Japanese chefs trained in Japan, and he does not go every morning to the fish market at 5am to choose top choice quality fish, you are a sushi noob. Like the guy who goes to Shogun (run by a Korean).
