I live in the midwest, so I don't get a chance to have REALLY good REALLY fresh sushi... I've never been to one of the boutique places in Chicago so the Uni I've had has all tasted pretty much like bad snot.

I'll try it sometime I'm in a nice place...

It's always funny when they have shiokara on Fear Factor. My wife would kill everyone in the shiokara eating events.

i've been taken to a very expensive high class japanese restaurant and they served us uni, supposedly the freshest and best money can buy. still, one bite and I was about to throw up. looks aside, tasted just plain foul. my family loves sushi and so do i, i just can't eat uni.

I have not tried it again since my first bad experience with it... not so much bad tasting as it was really really strange tasting and feeling and looking.

I love just about everything else... will have to give the Uni another go next time I'm at Yamazato or Akasaka (two decent NoVA sushi places... least I think they are decent.)

I agree.. i LOVE sushi, but i've tried that once, and it just didn't appeal to me... both the sight, texture, and taste of it.

Nakamura said some non-Japanese cooks were not careful enough in handling raw fish, causing problems over freshness or parasites.

Try Otom on Sepulveda in Culver City <== best sushi/best price/all you can eat sushi at the bar for $32 for 1 hour
Hide Sushi on Sawtelle in j4p town <== can never go wrong here
Sasabune on Sawtelle also in j4p town <== expensive pretentious, orig j4p style where it's chef's choice

those are pretty much the only 3 i go to.

Here's a fact about sushi you didn't know. Raw maki sushi is always pressed in a square shape. Cooked maki sushi is pressed into a circular or cylindrical shape.
