Yeah, that's the second source I read today which dishonestly claims that Lincoln "ordered" the execution of 38 men. I mean, think about that. Since when does a POTUS "order" people's execution? It doesn't work that way and never has.
What actually happened is that the Sioux had an uprising wherein they
allegedly killed hundreds of settlers. After which, the military took 303 of them prisoner. They were then tried in a military court, which issued death sentences for all them. The court did, not the President of the United States.
Lincoln then demanded that the military provide him with detailed information about the 303 men so that he could determine who was most culpable. He then commuted the sentence of 265 of them, while allowing the execution of the other 38. Not ordering it. Allowing it, while disallowing the execution of 265 others.
Here's another tidbit from a
neutral source:
Look, native Americans were treated badly for hundreds of years. I have no doubt they had legitimate grievances in that case and many others. But Lincoln was about as progressive as any white man for that age. Tearing down a statue of him 150 years later is moronic.
