I'm running Windows 98 orig. ed.
I transplanted a hard drive that had been running on motherboards with Intel chipsets to one running the VIA MVP3 chipset, and I think a compatibility problem with some of the drivers is causing problems with Windows Media Player 7.1 and maybe also with the video in general.
Certain videos, such as DIVX encoded ones, cause WMP 7.1 to lock up the whole system (CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work sometimes), and even uninstalling and going back to WMP 6.4 doesn't always help.
When I'm using other applications, such as IE 5.5, the scrolling seems to flicker much more than it did with the other motherboards. I usually use a TNT2 M64 AGP card, but this flicker also occured with an Intel I740 card. I've tried running the cards with the vertical interrupt enabled and disabled, and I have no card in the PCI slot next to the AGP. And when I try to change the properties of the display through the Control Panel, if I change the resolution or number of colors, the system locks completely if I click on Advanced.
Is there any way to eliminate all the driver software and start fresh? I tried reinstalling Win98, but nothing changed.
