I kind of went through this about 2 and a half years ago. I was driving to work in my 2000 GMC Sierra, and there's an intersection where they have needed a turn signal since the hospital opened up down the street in 1972. I was doing the speed limit, 50mph, and a 20 year old kid, driving a 95 Camaro Z-28, turned in front of me when I was already in the intersection. I took the front end off it, and then hit and tossed a 99 Cavalier into the ditch that runs along the road. She was shot almost 100' down the road. They had to cut her out of the Cavalier, it was so tweaked. Nobody was hurt, except me.
The Camaro and the Cavalier were both totalled, but my truck came through in what appeared to be pretty decent shape. The kid driving the Z-28 had no insurance, of course. He has no money, the car is a nearly 100% loss.
My truck had the "black box" in it, and it gave an interesting readout of the wreck, and it backed me up 100%, as far as speed and braking went. I was going 52MPH , and the throttle was almost at idle. The throttle goes to zero, and the brakes go to full (I think it was 255 of 0-255 levels) .14 seconds after I lifted off the gas, I hit the Camaro (speed drop to 36MPH almost instantly. The airbag didn't fire, since my left quarter panel and tire and "nerf bar" took most of the hit, then I slammed into the left rear of the Cav, and the airbag blew. My speed went from 36 to zero, instantly. A whole bunch of G's when it hit. This whole thing happened in the distance accross one intersection from start to finish.
If I hadn't have hit the Cav, I would have slammed into a huge light pole, and then gone into a ditch. My insurance actually went DOWN after this wreck! They said that the readouts showed I couldn't have done anything to avoid it, and so I wasn't penalized in any way, even though they had to pay out a fair chunk of cash.
Anyway, my truck was about 11K to fix, and my insurance company gave the woman something like 8K for the Cav, and a couple K for the hospital bills from getting checked out. My bill was over 7K, and also another 300+ for glasses and another 450 bucks for "incidentals". They sued the kid in the camaro, and got a judgement for 30K+ and he's paying for it in weekly payments.
Sadly for me, I came out of this deal with a permanent injury to my left leg. It was all bruised up and hurt like hell for weeks. It was swollen, but I just thought it was due to getting so tore up from me jamming it into the floor, or whatever. Well, it never went back to normal, and it's probably going to stay like that..forever. I would sue the kid too, but he's broke, so, I live with it.
I'm driving to work a few hours ago, and there it is, A TURN SIGNAL. Let's see, one fatality a year for 33 years and about 8-10 big wrecks there a year and they finally put the light in it should have had all along. Too late for me...
