Ok, NO DSL, and NO CABLE in the area, dont ask 'why dont you have dsl?' ... because its not possible. SOO.... onto the question.

I'm looking to put a wireless WAP of some form in my basement connected to a computer that will be constantly online via dial-up networking. My intention is to be able to share my puny connection throughout the house without having to run wires through chimney's walls, outside, etc and be able to get a few PC's online when i feel like using them, or someone else in the family needs to use them.. This way, the connection is always online and there is no need to go dialup and disconnect someone elses computer down/upstairs..

I'm a total newb to wireless, thats why this is probably perplexing me. I need to be able to hook up a wired lan (lan parties in the basement) to the said wireless network via hard wire. From what i've seen, the only WAP's that have a hardwired uplink port of any form are all routers, which i'm trying to totally avoid, as dialup sharing gives it self the famous xxx.xxx.0.1 ip, which is needed for the computer that is dialed-up to act as a gateway.

I have 5 port switches and cat5 all over the place to use, i just dont want to run it all over drilling holes in the house etc. Guess i'm just looking for recommendations on a WAP and configuration.

help?

wow.. 200$ for that router.... Could i just set a wireless router to act in client mode rather then running dhcp? I read somewhere that the newer ones do that, just need a recommendation if thats even possible.

The best I can conceive.

By this Router.

Buy the Cheapest Wireless Cable/DSL Router that you can find and use it as an Access Point (That will run you $20-$30).

By an External DialUp Modem ($20-$30).

So if you are a good shopper for $70 to $90 you can have a Shared DialUp Wireless Base.

Config: External DialUp Modem to SpeedStream Router (using Serial Port) to Wireless Router (Using Regular Port) to ?. Wireless Connection.

You can share an on-demand connection from the computer you want to be always-on pretty easily. Just make sure you have server version running on it, disable DHCP on the router, and enable either DHCP AND ICS on the box. Then you can set it to disconnect if there's so much idle time, and auto-dial on-demand.

EDIT
The point to that is all you really need is a WAP with a few wired ports and a wireless card in each box, nothing special.

Just wire the router to the dial-up box and it's go time. Be careful to not choose a POS router (namely Blitzz) as the crappy ones don't support DHCP passthrough (meaning, if it doesn't support it, then only the router gives out DHCP, so you can't run ICS.)

Orinoco used to have a WAP with a modem built in that could be activated remotely and shared by the wireless clients. I believe it was the RG-1000. I used to have one, but I never used it for dial-up, just wireless.

Good Luck

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I even had one that I gave to my parents. Pretty good router.
