Common sense. But then again... Perhaps United has no common sense. How the fuck can you make that assertion? You have no clue as to why he was really chosen.

Most people are surprisingly rational and perfectly willing to sit on-ass for the duration of their flight without raising a stink

'most' is meaningless when dealing with the number of people flying every day
99.99% of people could be perfectly fine and reasonable and the 0.01% will still cause tremendous grief
if you doubt me, just read through the easter egg thread
it happened, and since it did, we can expect certain things to happen, namely airlines are going to be scared to touch people and people know the airlines are going to be scared to touch them.
combine these two FACTS and the results are entirely predictable
it could be worse for united. The fact he was chosen has nothing to do with his being Chinese.
That said, I suspect some Chinese (and others) will believe it is racially motivated.
This is about some really poor corporate-driven decisions being made leading to a senior being beat up, not a hate crime.
huh?The fact is, we don't know why he specifically was targeted. A pessimistic person might point out that he appeared to be old, and a foreigner, therefore less likely to cause a stink than a young person who is more likely to resist, or an American who has a higher expectation of rights.
United: We didn't beat his ass and humiliate him enough. Let's look up his background and see if we can find any dirt.
United stock falls 4% because of this and wipes almost $1B off valuationas to how it would be better? do i really have to explain that? They could remove him without injuring him and causing a giant scene that wiped a billion dollars off the company's valuation
huh?
thought they picked the 'volunteers' by price of ticket.
so the lowest 4 were picked.
hm.. I see.. what if there were 5+ who paid the same low price
Its public record no?United: We didn't beat his ass and humiliate him enough. Let's look up his background and see if you can find any dirt.
United: Score! Telling the world he's a felon and gay will bring everyone to our side now!
f they offer a $1k ticket person an offer on what would technically be a cheaper seat (on another flight), they made money.
what they really need are security officers who are better trained in physical submissions and compliance holds. This was no giant muscle-bound man, there's no reason they couldn't forcibly remove him safely and efficiently

pic of victim at incident:
never would have thought he was close to 70
Common sense. But then again... Perhaps United has no common sense.
because involuntary denied boardings happen often enough that they have written policies on how to deal with it
and you can bet your ass that there is nothing in the employee manual that says 'pick chinks first'
And that has absolutely NOTHING to do with what happened on the airplane.
