Universal Card Reader (Disk is write-protected)

I'm using Radio Shack's 10-in-1 Card Reader

when i am done transfering the images to my hard drive i want to delete them.
when i try to delete them it says
"Cannot delete filename: The disk is Write-Protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another disk"

the only way i know of removing the write protection is with the switch on the chip... but the switch doesn't help at all.

PLEASE HELP! this is for the company i work for and we are all stumped.

It would seem to me that the problem is with the media - I suspect somehow it has become write protected and the switch doesn't work.

Have your tried contacting the maker of the SD chip? Have you tried it in a different reader?

Reboot and see if you can delete it afterwards. Sometimes I have files that I can't delete on my computer and it's tells me the same thing, after rebooting the machine I can delete them.

Really think you should try it on a another reader - preferably not a multi-format reader.

I have a eMachine at home with a universal reader in the case... I think i will try that tonight.

We've started buying kingston and corsairs hoping they won't have the same problem... i haven't recieved any of those chips yet so i'm not sure

What's weird is that one of the chips we tried worked. it was that same KODAK chip but it was purpleish color instead of black. we have like 7 of these damn KODAK SD 64mb chips.

The other thing you can do, since you have off loaded the images, etc. onto your hard drive, is to try and format the SD module in your camera.

That would be a good independent check to see if it is in fact the chip or a faulty 10-in-1 reader.

If it says that and the write protect switch is off, it apparently doesn't work. The SD module has gone South and needs to be replaced. Try the folks at Kodak for that option.

Also - this looks like it's worth a shot:

i was thinking maybe there's a back door

because i'm guessing XP is the problem... if maybe i boot up with something else and do it that way

It could be the reader. I have a card which I was able to view fine in the camera, but my reader wouldn't pick it up any more, it keeps saying that there's no card in the drive even though the light is on for the memory slot. I tried my friend's reader and it worked fine on my computer so I'm buying a new flash card reader.

Try deleting the pics from the camera itself. If that works, try using a different reader.
