Well, in order to get a mortgage I had to provide social security card, W2's, last years 1040, copy of driver license, proof of income from my employer, proof of employment, proof of payment for my past 6 months rent, copies of my statements from my checking and savings accounts for the past 3 months with detailed explanations of any large deposits, just to name some of the requirements. I'd say the right to vote should probably be something between that, and just holding up your right hand saying 'yep' when they ask you if you are a citizen.

Really? Which states are those? And we're discussing voter registration, not the act of voting (which comes later). So which states allow voter registration without proof of identification, as you suggest here?

The word "liberal" is a dirty word in American politics, unlike Conservative. I imagine you know that self-report tools of political ideology are woefully inaccurate...pretty much like ever other self-report tool. One of the dictionary definitions of "MILITIA" being "all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service."

Sure context is everything, and everyone has a different opinion on what the "proper" context is.

I'm glad to see that both of you follow the track that some Rights are more equal then others. Other then a Poll Tax, voting should be just as well regulated with proof of Citizenship, residence, criminal record and mental stability as the Right to own a firearm.

I'm a DBA. 350 Million rows aint shit anymore. Hell, I work for a small-ish fortune 1000 company, and we were just purging 10+ billion rows from our data warehouse. And we're operating on a lean (VERY LEAN) budget. I can't even imagine what the government would have with such deep pockets.

Americans are required to pay their taxes and to serve on a jury when called, so why shouldn't they also be required to vote? It seems like just as basic an obligation for a citizen of republic.

We have enough voluntarily voting with ignorance; why force everyone to vote? It would only compound the problem.

I'm for automatic registration of voters. I'm not for and don't agree this bill would allow illegal aliens or felons otherwise ineligible to vote to do so.

Too me it just opens up the voting process to fraud. Imagine you have a lot of people who have no intention of voting, yet they are registered. There is no photo requirement at the polling place so it would seem really easy for a group to use these newly registered voters as they see fit.
