Universal Voting Registration

Scuttlebutt has it that Charles Schumer and Barney Frank are going to give universal voting registration legislation a go again later this month. The democrats are hurriedly working on a ton of legislation that is not too popular with the American public.

With this legislation it will implement basically an automatic voting registration system. Whenever you get any service from the government, you will automatically be registered to vote. This sounds agreeable.. since if you move and forget to register, you will still be able to vote the day of an election.

So if you get welfare, food stamps, a drivers license, been in legal trouble, own property... or are on any public record or in any public database you will be registered to vote. Whether you wanted to or not.

And yes, illegals have drivers licenses, they have been put on public records via the legal system, they do receive food stamps and welfare, and in some cases own property. This legislation is also expected to give felons the right to vote. Politicians will soon have to pander to everyone.

I know the resident left-wing nuts will welcome this... but don't they feel that having someone prove who they are at a polling station is really a bad thing?

Good opinion piece for those that want it (so I can avoid the "you posted an opinion piece" whiners): http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/jan/07/letting-crooks-illegals-vote/

It could be a good system or bad system, depending on the details. Makes more sense than the current system which relies too heavily on the Parties and other Orgs to Register Voters.

Yeah, let's just go ahead and give illegals the vote. What else do you expect from Frank?

you should be able to vote if you have done 3 things:

1.Be an american citizen who is eligible to vote
2. prove that you are who you say you are at such a time that a switcheroonie won't occur
3.show up, exceptions for absentee ballots.

while it's not necessarily a big hassle, I slightly disagree with the idea that you should be made to wait longer than necessary in order to vote.

we could dip fingers in ink like in iraq.

of course it's easier just to steal and then stuff ballot boxes like LBJ.

I'm for automatic registration of voters. I'm not for and don't agree this bill would allow illegal aliens or felons otherwise ineligible to vote to do so.

I don't like it. America is about personal freedoms, or used to be. Just like we have right of religion we have right to be free of religion too. Same with voting. I have a right to vote but I also should have right not to vote.

This doesn't change your right not to vote. It makes it easier if you do want to.

Vote early, vote often, vote illegal.. its the democrat party way.

Yup.
I like the fact they want to enact this first and then work out the problems instead of the rational way of doing it like thinking of a plan first and then enacting it.

The only way I could support something like this is if there was verification of citizenship AT the voting booth AND it was tied to some national ID program or social security.

The way the Democrats want to enact this ensures that illegals and people who are not entitled to vote have the ability to vote.

So eventually big brother will have a database of everyone in the country. No problem with that.

Does this process sound conducive to orchestrating voter fraud?

Do I need to show identification in order to vote?
Michigan does have a voter identification requirement at the polls. Voters are asked to present an acceptable photo ID such as a Michigan driver's license or identification card. Please note that voters who do not have an acceptable form of ID or failed to bring it with them to the polls still can vote. They simply sign a brief affidavit stating that they're not in possession of a photo ID. Their ballots are included with all others and counted on Election Day

I'll answer for whomever may be interested. You bet your ass it is. The way the legislation has been presented thus far is that the the States are to use existing lists to register voters. Property owners, driver license holders, people who have signed up for benefits, etc. The biggest means for fraud I see is that these existing lists may not contain correct addresses for how many individuals? I don't know about where the rest of you live, but the unemployment rate is sky high here. People are losing and walking away from their homes in droves.

What are the chances of the same individual ultimately being registered under two addresses? Very, very good here. Who will investigate this? I can tell you - no one. There are no funds available and no manpower to do so.

This legislation will be presented with an extremely positive spin. There is nothing positive about the way this will be implemented. It's more deck stacking on the part of the Dem's. The 2010 elections are not looking good for the Dem's when they're cramming their ideals down the throats of the American people.

It would sure be handy to have a whole bunch of votes to pull out of a magic bag if needed.

I predict the legislation will pass.

I think a better way to promote democracy would be to allow corporations and private interests to donate infinite amounts of money to both parties.

Who's with me?

Uh, the entries come from existing government data. Ever hear of the social security database? Are you some off the grid sleeper agent kept hidden since birth for a secret mission?

Modern republicans realize they're a minority, and that the greater the turnout the poorer they'll do, in general.

so it's important that voter registration be as arcane and nitpicky as possible, also that the opposition be demoralized as much as possible with the usual "See! They're Just As Bad!" song and dance we're witnessing today.

It's also important to have somebody to blame, other than themselves, if they don't achieve their electoral goals, that their opponents are "cheating". A variety of ploys are used to rally the faithful, keep the juices flowing in their outrage junkies- Illegals, and Felons and double registration and OH MY!

Kinda like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, fantasizing and projecting the perils ahead...

Yeh, they're all in favor of democracy, just so long as it's limited to "their kind of people"...

How come your question asks 5 choices but only has 3 lines?

Ask Gallup, its their poll.

I was simply stating that "their kind of people" make up a much larger percentage of the country then the Liberals type of people.

Americans are required to pay their taxes and to serve on a jury when called, so why shouldn't they also be required to vote? It seems like just as basic an obligation for a citizen of republic.

The whole concept of voter registration is nonsensical.

There should be one requirement to vote - you must be a citizen. Period.

Why do people quote from the Rev Moon's rag like it's some kind of real newspaper?
