Grrr .. girlfriend is freaking the hell out. Apparently the school has no more room for housing and she was just accepted to the school as a transfer student.

I told her if the school has no housing left then they will provide her with a hotel instead. That's what my school did as well as the school my friend went too.
That's the norm right? I mean if a school has no space for a dorm then they put students in hotels, correct?

Yeah I can call the school on Monday, but you gotta realize I have to hear about this for the entire weekend....

Hmm, interesting. If you're a transfer at my school and you didn't file for housing on time, you're shit out of luck.

Did she request housing and was it confirmed? If so, then yes they are going to have to put her up somewhere.

Back in '99 I was in Jester dorm and they put a bunch of people in the student lounges ( when they ran out of dorm rooms), I do think they put people in motels though - shit I can't remember. As people dropped out ( 1-3 months ) they got moved to real dorms. There were 2 student lounges per floor, 15 floors, and they put ~4+ people in each one.

What year is she? She may be out of the housing guarantee, if they have one at all. I lived in a hotel my freshman year, but my University only covers housing for freshmen and sophomores.

She should start looking for an apartment nearby. It's Texas...I'm sure there is plenty of places.

prettty sure UT doesn't do it. man that's crazy tho, i remember it being pretty crowded my freshman year in 2001, then by time i graduated rumblings about not enough housing available.

just gotta go out there and find something off campus.

I got into one large state school and applied for dorm housing well before the deadline. I, and lots of others, didn't receive a spot. As far as the school was concerned, it was tough luck and up to me to find a place on my own.

I know finding an apartment is approaching the limits of human ability, but let's hope your girlfriend is up to the task.

UT has something like 50,000 students and on campus housing for 5,000. There is no requirement to live on campus. Most students live in apartments in "west campus" or "north campus", two neighborhoods around the university within walking distance.

UC Davis had no dorm space for me (transfer student) or even all their freshmen the year I started at age 18. We had to fend for ourselves.

You gave your gf bad info. You should call back and have her start looking for apartments.

BTW, UT Austin has over 50,000 students. Good luck fitting 50,000 into 5,000 housing spots... inform your GF she should look for an apartment.

I've never heard of UT putting people up in hotels, but it's been a while since I was there. There's plenty of apartment housing available though, check out west and north of campus --- much better than crappy dorm housing anyway.
