yea, i bought mine. also, win2k pro is 5 dollars, not 10. its 5 dollars per CD, and win2k is 1 cd. you can also get service pack 1 on cd, but you could always download it off the net for free from www.microsoft.com

This is very common academic pricing for MS products. I have been "attending" the University of Cincinnati for about 4 years now, and MS software has always either been free (you check it out from the library) or about $5 per disk in the bookstore. Not really a hot deal since most university students seem to be aware of its availability, and it just makes others jealous.

well..not every university offer Academic software at the same price. My school for example sells WinXP Pro for $79, and I'm sure not too many school has it for $5
Very hot deal for those with the UT connection. But I heard they record your Student ID for purchase, so seems like only 1 copy per student.

Are there other places where students can get heavily discounted Windows XP Pro, Office, Win2k from? I go to UCI and the prices at our computer store are normal/more expensive than other campuses. Is it because we have a huge emphasis in computer science? And if someone wants to buy a copy of some of those cd's from their campus I would be willing to pay a big markup.

just so people dont freak out..

1) its only 1 purchase per UT ID, basically, one per person
2) it isnt retail at all. all over the cd says UT and it has educational purposes only
3) cannot resell it at all
4) good price though. =)

At the University at Buffalo, all the software is free. The only ones student can keep is Office. As for the OS's and other products, you can lend them for free at the library. Nothing stopping you from going home and copying it.

What I need to know is this: when you go in to buy the software, do they actually scan your ID like they do at the gym, or do they just look at it and write down the #? I am no longer a UT student, but I still have my student ID from a few years ago. I'm sure if they scan it, it will come up as invalid. Can someone who has actually gone and bought the cd's tell me for sure?

Thanks,

-Ace-

Yea, it works for every university, one copy per student. They are OEM. Just CDs in an paper sleeve with the key.

I bought a bunch last year, I only used a few of them: now I don't think I need winXP pro, visual studio pro, front page and officeXP pro.

Wow, if this is true then the NDSU bookstore is ripping people off big time by charging full price. Oh wait, I already knew that. If only I could take advantage of this.....

For some reason they haven't updated that page. Look at the upper left corner of this link and it says it is now available for students as well. I have never had them scan my ID. You just fill out a form with your student ID number on it, pay, and they give you the CD.

I think it depends on whether your university has an enterprise licensing agreement with Microsoft. Indiana University has one too, and its faculty, staff, and students can purchase MS software CD at $5 per CD.
