Unknown cpu error on post

Out of the blue my computer is showing an "unknown cpu - update bios to unleash the cpu's full potential" error when i start it up.
Nothing has been changed in it for at least a year, doesn't make any sense. Restarting doesn't fix the problem, but turning the psu off and then turning it back on does and it runs fine.
Mobo is a an asus p5b deluxe with a e6400 cpu, i'll update the bios eventually but it still boggles the mind why it started to happen.

I used to think I "knew a lot," but I'm getting old and find it hard to keep up with all this . . . . stuff . . .

How old is the wafer-battery that keeps your CMOS powered? Those things need replacement from time to time.

I'm just guessing, here. But there are no easy explanations for the behavior you mention. This is about as close a reason as I can imagine, though . . .

I had an issue like that and it solved by itself after a while.

It sounds like motherboard is failing. The voltage regulators might not work properly. Also, BIOS might be corrupted. Change it even if there is not newer version.

Update what happens.

I would expect to lose bios settings if it was the battery, but i'll probably go pick one up just in case.
I hope its not the mobo, not in a hurry to upgrade. Strange indeed...

Updated the bios and the mobo wont boot at all, no beeps no nothing. Tried clearing the cmos... nada. Im at a loss.

Couldn't revive the mobo so i picked up a used p5k, plugged it in and all is well, winxp booted up just fine.
I wonder if i can still rma this mobo... still baffled on how/why it died like this.

Stuff like a motherboard going overboard does seem to happen when you least expect it to. The p5k is a decent board but I would suggest you do update the BIOS on it when you get a chance.
