unknown hardware problem

I have just purchased a new MoBo, abit be6-II and I am trying to get it working. I have been attempting to install win 98, and I have recieved many errors while doing so. I generally get the all blue screen saying "A fatal exception error has occurred,", but I have also gotten the windows registry checker error, and it usually messes up everything that I have installed. I pulled everything out of my computer but the video card, and when I did get the computer into windows, I tried to install my sb Live! value card. When i'm running the program on the cd, it seems to start reading the cd fast, then stop for like 45 seconds and then start again. The cd rom drive is spinning the whole time, and I did just buy it a few days ago. Then it starts to update again, and the little counter moves up to a higher percent, until it happens again a few seconds later. Then my computer just freezes, while the cd-rom is still spinning. I'm not sure if it's my RAM or not, because I do not know how to test it. (other than keep trying to install pulling one stick of ram out at a time) Does anyone know what I could do to fix this problem?
Or does anyone have a program that could test my ram?

my setup is:

My setup is:
abit be6-II running bios behrv
p2-400 cpu
128 megs of pc-100 RAM (toshiba)
maxtor 15 gig HD (brand new)
SB Live! value card
Voodoo 3 3000 pci card
memorex 48 speed cd rom (brand new)
Asantefast 10/100 network card
Windows 98

thanks in advance

Does that blue screen come up on the first boot? If it does that happens to me quite often too, I just got lucky once! ghosted right away, it could be the postition you put your cards in or drivers, to test your ram you can buy a nice and expensive hardware thing and plug it in to see if it works, if you just want to test speed, sandra 2000 works.

Try the network adapter and SBLive in PCI slots 2 and 3, and the voodoo in PCI slot 1.

Sounds like memory. What system did the Dimm come from? Did it work?

check your ide cable. try a replacement. could be a file-transferiring error.

or it´s really the RAM

Actually my RAM was just sitting around for a while. I took it out, and put in some of the stuff I have in my other computer. Do you guys know if the cable that comes with the new Maxtor HD's are the correct ones for the udma66? Maybe that's the problem. I'll plug the HD into the normal ide slot. But now I'm getting an error saying "Boot Sector will be modified, type Y to continue or esc to exit"

Going to try to install win98 again. Wish me luck.

That "boot sector will be modified" error you're getting is because you have some sort of virus protection *enabled* in your BIOS. Disable it when you're installing Windows.

Didn't work out as I planned. Now i'm getting a "unable to write to disk in drive c" Which is my hard drive. This is after the win 98 install too. I actually got through the install all the way, was trying to install some drivers, and got that error. Any ideas?

I'm going to go return this HD for a new one. Until then, anyone have any other suggestions? I might as well try another win98 cd while i'm making changes........

Have you tried all the different ports? Do you have any other HDD to test it with? It could also be a problem with your MB.
