Wow, that looks pretty sweet. I worry about the speed though, since they'll probably be getting lots of customers at that price.

Anyone tried this yet?

Todd that was one of my concerns as well. I have not signed up but I have emailed them to get this information. According to them they do not limit you on the speed either. If they are any good, I am dropping my easynews.

I used them a while ago....before the unlimited and they had some hardware problems and thus retention problems. They
don't seem to be fly by night but I had to go to their billing service for a refund.
I currently use usenetserver and their retention has improved mucho, my download speeds exceed..almost double...my dsl speed limit, possibly because bellsouth uses them as well it seems, at least linking to them for premium news group services. there is a thread here somewhere in the hot deals forum

oops, I used newshosting.com but I meant to say usenetserver.com.-unlimited-works fine

even hotter is 1 year access for $59.95. I'd put it on a credit card, because there is no way they can charge that and continue unlimited fast connections. at least then you could get your money back for at least 90 days if they didnt deliver promissed service.

That's a real gamble. Are they going to be around in a year? If they disappear in 6 months you would have been better off paying $8.95 a month. If they make it to 7 months you break even. Likewise, if they fold in 2 months, you might be able to disput it with your credit card (it goes through Paypal, however. [EDIT: Sorry, only Amex is through Paypal, the rest are through iBill.])

I might try it for a month or two.

newshosting.com most likely counts headers towards your 8GB limit. I think easynews is simply the best. They don't count headers towards your quota. I can get 400KB/sec from them. I use them mostly for fills but also when I need something fast. My cable cox has a limit of 4 simultaneous connections and get around 50KB/sec from each one (total 200KB/sec.). But there retention is only like 4 to 5 days unlike the 30 day retention of easynews.

Oh yea just before you hit your queue load up a buttload of data. Make sure you don't have auto-renew. Last time I got like 8.6GB ...basically 2.6 GB over my 6GB quota..for free. You can do that with trials too.

Here is a nice site to learn about usenet, and find some FREE open servers(you get what you pay for, so don't complain if retention rates suck).

Here is the response I received from 100proofnews a few minutes after emailing them:

"Retention is currently 4-8 days, depending on group. This should be doubled within the next couple of months.

Thank you,

whoa, I had no idea you could get purchase subscriptions to newsgroups, if your broadband provider doesn't have any.

I'm currently at UT Austin, and if this is true, I'm probably gonna sign up with one. This is def. a hot freakin' deal for me.

Keep the info coming! What are some other newsgroups sites that have been pretty good? I have a T3 connection here in the dorms, and I wanna make sure it's fully utilized. ;D

Well I just signed up and completeness is definitely not as good as Giganews. I'm definitely seeing more incompletes. Speed is also slower than Giganews. Be aware if you sign-up to make sure you write down your username/password. I sent mine off to the printer and it doesn't print out those fields on the hard copy (nice surprise)! I actually had immediately call customer service hoping they could give me that info again. They couldn't, and I was told that I'd have to wait anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours for the webmaster to respond to the situation. I opted to cancel the subscription since the customer service rep couldn't find my info (login/password). However, after cancelling I got an email stating my cancellation and it gave me all my account information. Get this, it said you won't be billed again but you can use the service for the remainder of this billing period. Looks like they're trying to get that $8.95 even when you immediately cancel. I'll take another look at the completeness issue tomorrow and report back. I have to say they do seem to respond timely to things!

Well instead of discussing about it without good comparison, go here for all of the news services reviews. I am using sonic-news and with dialup, 100MB per day is good enough. I am only paying for $3 for the first 20 days. After that $3.99 per month.
LMK anything better please. I am thinking of switching to 250MB per day. Maybe go back to Value-news since they have the greatest retention but not completeness with 500MB per day.
Even with the reviews, things change.

hmm... all the smaller ISP's I have been with give newsgroups out for free. This is not all to good in my opinion...

Don't mean to thread crap, but I think there are better deals than this.

Yes, there are some ISP's that give out free newsgroups, or free binary newsgroups, but some ISP or broadband providers prohibit binary newsgroups b/c of their highbandwidth.

For some people, like me, who is on campus at UT Austin, I don't have a newsgroup server so this would be a good service to pay for, assuming I wanted access to binary newsgroups that badly.

For completeness issues, you can just resort to another server, as good readers can handle multiple servers; a free provider like teranews will most likely have the fills. paying for the year is taking a risk though...but $5 a month for unlimited is crazy. maybe too crazy, like cyberwings.

I would recommend easynews, I've been with them for over a year and never had a problem. Downtime is limited to like 10 seconds, no problems ever with retention or completions, and transfers are as fast as my internet connection allows it to be. There's a FREE 3 day trial too so you can decide for yourself whether it's all that it is cracked up to be.

I've used www.teranews.com with good results. Best thing is its free expect for a one time $4 setup fee. You're limited to a 50mb/day download limit however. You can upgrade your account to various levels for montly fees.

I was with these guys for about 3 months, and it was only that long because they were kept telling me they were working on this and that, and all should be well "in a few days". Not to mention they gave me a free month or so when I bitched at the beginning.

They had the poorest completion of any pay Usenet service I've ever tried (Newsguy, Airnews, Giganews, Teranews, Usenetserver, and others I can't even remember). I think in three months I might have downloaded 10 files. And beware, cancellation is not an easy task. It took them a few weeks before responding to my cancellation request, and I've read reports of others needing to dispute the charges with their credit card companies in order to stop the billings.

I just checked this deal out. The retention is about one-sixth of Usenetserver and the speed is also about one-fifth to one-sixth of Usenetserver. Waiting for word on the cancellation now.

anyone ever heard of newzpig.com? They were constantly working on their crap too but allowed free accounts with unlimited downloads until they were ready to start billing. Then when they were ready to bill, they disappeared.
