6TB for $15 seems crazy cheap. OTOH usenet content has degraded a LOT, still even though I just added 1TB I may do it.

I checked usenet like 10 years ago and it seemed that all stuff posted 5 years earlier had missing stuff. I think maybe the law or someone caught up and made them retroactively delete stuff. Are there usenet servers that still have everything ever posted? I used to enjoy it in the late 90s before the web was materialized but now I am not sure there is a use for usenet.

The infrastructure of usenet is much more robust than in the past, but DMCA take down requests hit the system pretty hard, then it adapted. I wouldn't be shopping for TB drives if it wasn't still working. I still use some of my old stuff like binsearch, but retired newsbin pro in favor of SABnzbd, and do most of my searches on Drunkenslug or ABnzb. Key for me was snooping around on reddit until I found all the important discussion areas, the only one I think I can mention here is r/usenet.

^^^Indeed, all one needs to take advantage of Usenet is a good NNTP provider, a great indexer, and a good newsreader. A good provider and a good newsreader are the easy part but finding a really good indexer is the key. Well I guess you could always do it old school and find all the articles posted within a group but gah what a pita.

Anyway, @Staples it is doubtful that their is a provider that still has everything ever posted. The amount of data retention that would be required to do that would be insane and no provider I know of has the recourses for something like that.

There was a thread on reddit where somebody found some old tapes and was trying to restore a segment of lost early years, but we are talking pre 2005. In the old days insanely large files were not very common, now days you might have two dozen people uploading huge movie files within days of DVD release.

Anyway, @Staples it is doubtful that their is a provider that still has everything ever posted. The amount of data retention that would be required to do that would be insane and no provider I know of has the recourses for something like that.

What I used to use was Grabbit for a binary news reader, their integrated search, and Astraweb. All were probably the cheapest so I doubt they were of any real quality.
