Unlock car using cellphone

I have a bet with a co-worker that he CANNOT unlock his car via cell phone by calling someone next to his car from a far distance and pressing his unlock button on his keyless entry fob whilst pointing it at the phone.

I know this is a myth spread via an old email

on a not-completely unrelated note. I once saw a singer for a band use his cell phone to call someone in the audience, then use both phones to create an awesome delay/echo effect.

and yeah, freq. range, duh. however, it might be possible to use the cell signal as a carrier, but that would require converters at both ends.

lol @ the people who voted yes. Your remote is transmitting in the several megahertz range and the receiver is tuned to only that frequency. Your cell phone is sampling the microphone transducer at roughly 1-5KHz, so it is missing all of the information transmitted by the remote. Even if it were capable of recording that signal, however, the speaker transducer is only driven at 1-5KHz (or around this range) which the door lock receiver would never even acknowledge as being in existence.

It would be nice if we can record the remote rf signal and playback through your cell phone. Unfortunately, your cell phone does not have the hardware to emit in the frequencies used by car remotes.

I went outside with my cellphone, my wifes and my keyfob.

I put my wife's phone on the car, stood next to it and called it with my cell. Used my keyfob and not only could I unlock and lock the doors, but also the trunk.

I think snopes is wrong

Anyway OP: so your coworker must also believe that if I stand next to his car and talk (I suppose I could vary my voice so it crosses all the frequencies I can generate), it will unlock? what a GREAT plan!

That's friggin' amazing!

Who would have thought that your keyfob would STILL work when your car had a cell phone sitting on top of it? It must have been the open connection between the two phones because it's well known that keyfobs don't normally work in the presence of cell phones.
