China is pretty good at making clones. I've lived in China for a few years and some of their products are excellent. Some of what you hear some people referring to as the "cheap ipod knockoffs" are actually ~improvements~ on the ipod - at least in my eyes. Chinese manufacturers will often take popular products that are crippled in some way and add functionality that consumers will want but producers will not include. So, at the moment, you can either buy a Nano or you can buy an MP3 player that uses very similar technology but that is smaller, offers increased functionality, and does not include any sort of digital rights management at half the price of the Nano. Which sounds best to you? I bought the clone, compared it to my Nano in usable quality, sold the Nano on Ebay, and bought another clone for my wife. After the sale of the Nano, the two 4GB Meizus cost me $15 and are, in my opinion, superior devices.
Of course, you aren't getting an Apple, and therefore you don't have a warranty of any sort. I don't keep devices long enough to break them because there's always something new I want within a year, so I rarely need a warranty. Plus, dealing with warranties are often a pain, so I'd rather just take my chances. If it was only a price difference, I'd support the domestic company who invented the technology over the foreign manufacturers who ripped it off. I don't want to use iTunes, though, and I don't want to be locked into some special plan designed to separate me from yet more of my hard-earned money. In my opinion, that's a bunch of BS and it's shameful that Apple is perpetrating it. Until Apple makes a product that offers exactly what I want, I'll keep buying the clones that do.

They are often made in the same factories that the original products are made. This isn't even from CHina, but Taiwan, which generally produces superior products in any event. If I wanted an iPhone-like phone, I'd go for it and see how it works out. If you're not willing to take a chance, then wait for some reviews to emerge. Either way, good luck!
