Unlocking the 6200

I know it should be as easy as just running Rivatuner, but does anyone have some more info on what version of the card can do it? I'm looking at upgrading my video card on my secondary computer and would like to keep it right around $100.

Should I not mess with it and just get a 9600XT instead?

From what I've read (and I told this to BobDaMenkey today), there's greater than a 75% chance that it will work. Also, from what I've heard, the EVGA and Leadtek cards are the best candidates for unlocking\OCing. If anyone has heard\read differently, then say so, as I don't want to spit out false information .

hmm, that's pdd, shouldnt they all have equal chance?
anyway, i do agree the percent unlock is particularly high for this card. much better than the 6800 to 6800gt unlock rate.

The reason, I guess, that the EVGA and Leadtek boards are so successful is because they are essentially using a plain-old 6600 and then using a BIOS to identify it to a 6200. They also use a different cooling solution, but thats because the chip is clocked lower, and thus, runs cooler. I am not completely certain that this is true, but it seems logical to me, as the 6200 and 6600 boards are very similar in component layout.

BTW, I see BDM wasn't specific on the card he wants to get. He wants an AGP version of the 6200, as this is for an older machine, thats restricted to AGP.

How would an unlocked 6200 or 6600 agp compare to say a 9800pro or 6600gt? or even 9700pro..

Yeah, sorry for not being specific.

And it's not that I don't trust you Tony, I thought I'd just spread this around and get some more input on it.

And if you unlock a 6200 it becomes a 6600, and then you can OC it, which could possibly bring it up to 6600GT levels, but more than likely a bit below that. Which would be rather kickass for a card that only costs about $110. I think it would be somewhat close to being par with a 9800pro if you can get a good OC on it.

You won't get 6600gt speeds out of the memory. The core can equal or exceed stock 6600gt speeds. I had a Radeon 9700 about 6 mos. ago, and this Leadtek seems just as fast, after I opened the pipes.

top speed ever achieved on a geforce 6600(basically a 6200 with 4 more pipes) i've seen in reviews is around 540/700 far shy of a 6600gtt which hits something like 570/1.14ghz.

9700 is faster stock but 6200 unlocked/oced will be as fast to a little bit faster.

Does anyone know if the 6200 PCI-E cards (nonTC) can be unlocked and OC'd just as the AGP version is capable of? I'm not exactly sure if there even is a difference, as it just seems that many here that have reported their experiences have used AGP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PCI-e models won't work and neither will the new A4 chip revisions.
The window of opportunity for this is now pretty much closed.
For more info you'll have to go to the guru3d forums and specifically the Rivatuner forum. As I said the pci-e models now seem to be a different chip with just 4 pipes and the AGP cards that do have the full 8 pipes in hardware aren't any good for modding either. The new A4 revision of the NV43 is somehow different and is said to be unmoddable by Unwinder, the guy who writes Rivatuner.
Sorry for the bad news. If you can find a used 6200 AGP that's an older chip revision it should work. Maybe try the for sale/trade forum here.

Thanks so much for the heads up, PG! I had no idea about the new A4 revision - when you're slow, you blow.

hhhhmmm...... i had heard that you could unlock a 6200 but i thought it was a lie....hhm...guess i was wrong. How does it unlock... Nividia's site says that it only has 4 pipes...How can you unlock it to 8 pipes? What would be my chances of unlocking a AGP 6200? Any specific brand i should use(XFX,EVGA,BFG,Gainward, ect.)?
