Heh, looks like you've got a little fan club mrbill! Well done for the great advice though. Although I do not have the problem, and have used Hiren's Boot CD before, it's nice to see someone giving sound advice and help

Put in the WIN XP CD and go to repair Windows... once it boots into dos or whatever type in... chkdsk /r .. takes forever but will fix the problem.

You've got PM....

Hmm.... that is strange.

Sorry, don't know what to tell you on that one. (Maybe try a different Disk utility? Maybe it can clear the error???)

Everytime I've come across the error "Unmountable Boot Volume" (since Win2000), Partition Magic has cleared the error (except for other, more serious errors) and corrected the problem.

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)

what other disk utilities are there?

i checked the partitionmagic userguide..

1516 Partition improperly dismounted
The partition dirty flag is set in a restart record in the journal file. This error may
have been caused by a power failure or system crash while the Windows NT
operating system was writing the partition. Reboot Windows NT and execute
CHKDSK /F to repair the damage

however i can't get into windows so i can't run chkdsk >_<

windows xp's partitin is ntfs.. could this be a problem..

i fixed it!!! yayy.

okay so basically i decided to try booting up with the xp cd again..

i couldn't boot up with the xp cd before because the order of how to boot up in setup was floppy, hd, and then cd.. so i switched it to cd, hd, floppy.. and it worked.. and then i did recovery console and did chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r (not sure which one of those did the actual fixing) and then fixboot, y, and restarted
apparently that does work..!

thank you for the help and patience

This happend to me to a laptop after I went through the scanners at the airport. It was working in the general lobby, went through the scanners, and boarded the plane. In that 15 min time frame the lappy booted up with the unmountable boot volume. I have been able to repair it in the past by just taken it out and putting it in an external enclosure and checking for disk errors and recovering bad sectors. However this time I did not have any luck and lost the drive.

Tomwd, you've got mail!

This is an image for a bootable floopy! But you can still make the floopy, then use Nero (or your choice of burning software) and make a bootable CD.

If you don't have a floopy, I suggest you get one.... IT'S NOT DEAD YET!!!

Just kidding... I guess I could make a bootable CD .iso for people....

The solution is very easy (for a majority of the cases). "Begin cut and paste" (from an earlier e-mail):

For the original poster, he didn't have a floppy drive, so we had to make a bootable CD for the problem PC. He went to a PC that did have the floppy drive and made the bootable floppy. THEN we had to go into Nero (or you're CD burning program of choice) and make a bootable CD. Otherwise, you can boot directly off the newly created floppy.

Once you boot up (off floppy or CD), let Partition Magic start (it will automatically). It should see you hard drive (or hard drives, if you have more than one). Right-click on the drive and select "Check Disk for errors".

This is a non-destructive disk check (it won't hurt any data on your hard drive). Hopefully, it will clear the flag (or find the error) and clear it up. You should be able to reboot normally and (again) hopefully, the PC will boot up.

If not, something else is going on (probably a bigger problem).

ESTYZESTY.... if you want to run the CHKDSK /F, you can do this by booting Windows up, pressing the F8 key repeatably at the beginning of the boot (after the BIOS screen but before the Windows splash screen - with the progress bars on it). If you've hit the F8 key correctly, you will get an screen with a bunch of options. One option is to start Windows with command line, choose this option. Once you are at a command line (usually C:\Windows\command), run your CHKDSK /F.

I haven't had any luck with this command or option (starting in cmd line mode), but you can always try.

I believe you can boot from the WinXP CD and (eventually) you will be able to get to a command prompt. (I'm sure somebody will chime in if I'm wrong...)

I've had better luck with Partition Magic clearing the error.

Ok... I've had a lot of requests on a bootable CD (instead of the floppy image), so I've started sending that out.

Well... then people started asking how to burn an ISO, so I created a document for that....

Whew... I hope a good percentage of people out there are having good luck clearing these "flags" off their HDD's.

Here is the document for anybody that wants it (I'm using Nero).

Hmmm... I guess it won't keep the pictures... you get the idea...

The first half of the document is for "Classic Nero", the second half is for Nero Express.

Too bad it didn't let me paste the pictures... it was all pretty and everything.

Partition Magic should start up automatically.

The "45 CRC error" is probably not good news. If you can, click on the "fix" button, good luck, sounds like you've got a more serious problem.
