Hmm... yeah... probably not good:

As per Symantec/Partition Magic:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/primus/id2406.html

Error 45 CRC Error in data
Solution: Error 45 CRC Error in data Use ScanDisk (or CHKDSK /R in Windows NT) to perform a thorough surface scan of the disk. This flags any bad sectors on the disk so that they cannot be used in the future.

Count me in as among the Unmountable. I have a slightly different cause for it.
My two year old has discovered how to turn the computer off and does so at
inappropriate times. So, I've got the same error. I've created an XP Boot
Floppy disk (well, disks). But just in case that doesn't work (since chkdsk
and Fixboot seems to have not worked for a lot of folks) -- could you send
me the Partition Magic files too? Floppy disk version is fine. Thanks so much.

Rofl is this a "request Partitionmagic from mrbill14" thread now?

I had the same problem, but in my case, I think my RAID controller was fvcked up, so I ended up having to reformat and rebuild the array...

I just ran into this problem too. I think it was probably caused by the fact that in the 4 years since the HP PC has been being used, it had never had the HDD defragmented at all(even since the problem has been fixed, I still can't get all the files to defragment). The way I fixed it was that I hooked the problem HDD up to a separate PC via an external USB enclosure, and then just ran an error check using chkdsk(with both boxes selected). I was then able to boot right up after I installed the problem HDD back into the HP PC. I have been doing some cleanup since then(Virus checks, Spyware removal, and software updates, etc.) and haven't run into any more boot problems so far. :crossesfingers;

All,

Your XP CD already has a command to check your disks when your OS disk is unbootable.

Boot from your XP CD. At the first prompt (after it's booted for 3-5 minutes), at a blue screen, press F10 (no, it's not shown on the screen.)

Then you'll be prompted to select your keyboard type, then you'll be prompted to log in. Key in your admin account password (hit ENTER if you don't have one) and then just run "chkdsk /r c:" and you'll be well on your way to fixing your disk problems.

Total time invested, aside from the disk check, is 3-5 minutes. It's simple.

dclive,

You are correct. You can run the chkdsk command off the WinXP CD. However, the particular problem I ran into, this would not solve it. Yes, it would go through the chkdsk and repair the "errors", but the HD would still come up unbootable (blue screen).

Partition Magic seems to clear the error (physical errors or a "partition was improperly dismounted" error).

Partition Magic now contains a disk repair utility? I'd thought they just used the chkdsk code?

Mrbill,

Thanks a TON for your quick repsonse. Unfortunately, I think I have a much larger problem as PM can't fix the issues.

Thanks again, though!

I booted with PM 8.05, it check and finds a error #1516, then asks me to run a chkdsk to fix the error on a MS-DOS command line but I cannot get Windows XP started to do so...grrr? Confused....

I should have mentioned I did try to boot from an XP cd but it did not pick it up...so far it only recognized my ERD disk repair CD at boot up. I'm going to try floppty boot disk no. Any thought?

That's the error I was pointing out when I first responded to this forum.

Dug this on Symantec's site...

Error occurs with PartitionMagic 8.0
If you encounter Error 1516 with PartitionMagic 8, first run CHKDSK /F on the affected partition. For instructions on how to run CHKDSK, read How to Run Microsoft's CHKDSK from the Command Line. If this does not fix the error, try running PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch, which causes file system errors to be ignored.

To run PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch
Boot from the first PartitionMagic rescue disk.
When you are prompted to insert the second rescue disk, press Ctrl+C to drop to the command (A:>) prompt.
Insert the second PartitionMagic rescue disk and type the following:

pqmagic /ifc

Press Enter.

This is why so many people say to run CHKDSK /f from the WinXP disc. I've found that PM does this when you run the "scan disk for errors". It seems to fix any error, and clear the "dirty flag".

As always... YMMV

What does "it did not pick it up" mean? Your XP CD is fully bootable, so you should be able to put that in the drive, boot from it, and go into the recovery console, and run the chkdsk from there.

Running PM without running CHKDSK (when PM tells you you have disk issues) is asking for problems, IMHO.

rickmann, go to setup and check the order of how you are booting up.
my computer would not recognize the xp cd until i changed the order for it to attempt booting from the cd first.
