because HTT of 300 is too high for this board

i.e. the clock generator that has to generate the base frequency of 300mhz is overheating, or something along those lines...

Lower all o/c settings except the HTT to find your max. My max on this board is around 280.

Thinking of buying A-data DDR600 mems, anyone tried it with this board?

My max HTT seems to be 262.
How can I find the maximum hypertransport link (<- is that the right name?) speed? Just keep increasing the HTT with HT ratio 4 until I can't boot? and what does the last T in HTT stand for?

drop that multi to 3x. You will exceed your theoretical limit if you keep it at 4x

hi!

i searched through the forum but couldn't find an answer to my question, so now i'm asking you:

how can i find out what revision of the board i have? (it says 1001 on the bios chip, is that rev. 1001??)

and what are the major differences between the diff. rev.'s??

thanks a lot, greetings from switzerland

you can find the model and rev printed on the motherboard itself, right around the PCI slots in big white letters (in-between the pci devices and to the right, if they're on your left)

yes, and AFAIK there are only 2 revisions of this board out in the market (and in people's houses)

rev 1.04 -- the first one that's been avail. since July or so
rev 1.05 -- only started showing up in September i think

ok thanks guys!
yeah, i have the rev. 1.04
hmm...it sucked hard yyesterday, i tried some settings that u discribe throughout this thread, and i could finally get the board to boot @ FSB 230. but only with really relaxed memory timings, 2.5-4-4-7 :/ i have hyperx 500MHz...and it does ok in aquamark (about 53.800, have a 9800pro 256MB @ 400/390). but it keeps failing in prime 95...almost through all the ram settings until i set the timings back to auto....man, (((( any idea? oh yeah, processor is an nc 3400+ an i think i saw in cpu-z that i have the oc version. greetings yves

anyone tried A-data DDR600 mems on this board? Believe I´ve read somewhere that a-data would work nice @ 2.7v

put your dimms in slots 1 & 3.

if there are still problems... try running with just ONE ram dimm.

make sure V_dimm is 2.7v or higher.

Since increasing V_core has a DIRECT effect on improving memory stability, try increasing it...

hey guys i did update my bios to 1.6 and i need to go back to a 1.5 again seems i can't change any setting in this version of bios it tells me system failed due to overclocking and it is the same settings i had before.
but it won't let asus update do it. u need to do it from dos with floppy and i have no floppy. any ideas.
i used to be 2400 before. now i can't do it. everything is the same.
i can't go over 5% overclock
i tried htt to be 3
i tired using 3 4 4 8 timing as well.
dono what to do

the 1006 bios appears to be fatally flawed (MAC address problem), so I wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot pole.

not sure how to fix your problem, sounds more like the bios flash messed up...

i have a very off the wall question here.
turning the Cool&Quite stuff ON with this CPU makes it fluctuate like crazy when i watch the clockspeeds in CPU-z. i am wondering if for the sake of a little quietness, such fluctuations are a good thing for the life of the CPU?
BTW i have never found the fan to be THAT noisy. anyone have any ideas about the technical aspects of this.

along with changing the fan speed cool and quite changes the speed of the processor (lowers the multiplier) so it should not adversely affect life of the processor (at least no more so then notebook techniques have for the last several years). If you dont mind the noise of the fan at full, then turn cool and quite off, or if you do mind the noise but dont want to deal with temperature changes just buy a better heatsink with a realy quite fan.

CnQ does not touch fan speed...

However, the stock fan has a thermistor which adjusts RPM based on the heat it feels -- the effect of that is what you are hearing.

Hi All,

New to the forums. Read most of this thread. I found a solution to my overclocking problems. I had the same symptoms as another poster here (not gonna go back and look). I couldn't even get past 210 without hanging on startup. Also, XP took a long time to boot. I have a WD 200gb SATA drive and was using it on the nvidia built in sata connection (master 3) by the cpu. My solution to the known sata issue was to disable the onboard sata and run exclusively off the silicon image raid/sata controller.

The first thing you must do is go into the bios and under advanced, onboard devices, set the SI raid mode to sata only (I had it disabled). Reboot the machine and when windows finds the new controller, load the drivers off of the asus cd. Now you can shut down and move the sata cable to sata 1 on the orange plugs at the bottom of the board (upper leftmost). Boot into windows, you might have to reset the boot order in the bios, and then under device manager delete the nvidia raid driver, leave the silicon image one.Reboot again and you'll notice how fast windows loads now.

I am currently at 260 fsb, 3 htt and 333mhz ram with 3-3-3-8-1t timings. 2.6 volt on kingston value ram. My cpu is a cg revision and I am still running a 10x multiplier on 1.525 volts. I have been running prime95, doom3, pacific assault, and Sandra for 5 hours now without a hitch.

locutus,

you say it's not fan speed but instead RPM's..... aren't the RPMs of the fan essentially the speed?

what he means is, cool and quite just lowers the speed of the processor, then the fan changes because temperature drops, so it indirectly lowers rpm, it doesnt change it directly.

yes, but even that is a fallacy because it'll only happen if you're using the particular AMD stock heatsink which has the thermistor. for example, my stock heatsink either didn't have a thermistor, or it was non-functional. it always spun at max RPM. i have a well cooled case and live in Canada, so its not because ambient was too high or anything.

and then there are reports of where machines which are idling, but in "hot rooms" - i.e. during the summer - have their CPU fan spin up into high rpm. conceivably that could happen with CnQ enabled as well - if your case sucks and use mulitple Raptors etc.

and those of us using third party heatsinks... no thermistor at all.

Dunno if this has been reported, but I recently went from my normal 5600 3dmark05 to 5375 and I couldn't figure it out, I kept testing and testing, same thing, nothing had changed, I thought my psu mighta been dead. Turns out going from 1005 to 1006 bios was the difference, after reflashing back to 1005 my 3Dmark05 returned. If anyone is interested in my settings just reply, I wonder if any of you have had this problem?

Guys, I have what's listed in my sig. I've watched this thread forever, and I've delved into overclocking a bit* but the RAM timings just throw me off. What would be the best to go with in a 1:1 ratio? My ram, TCCD chips [that excel at low volts] is 2-2-2-5 @ DDR400, so I have alot of flexibility. I want the best memory preformance. 2.5-3-2-5/10?

* - after some hard learning, I did mostly FSB increments with 2.5-2-2-5 @ 2.7v for prime95/memtest stability

ram timings are not really a big deal.

2.5-3-3-10 are fine.

just make sure you use CMD of 1T

interesting... but i'm not planning on touching BIOS 1006 anyways, because of how it wipes out your unique MAC address on the built-in Gigabit lan.

very poor quality control on Asus' part. and their stupid customer service reps are random people off the streets of Taipei so if you try to communicate this to them, they'll tell you to format your C: drive.

4 fried usb ports.... voila NVIDIA SYSTEM UTILITY program.

"hey wahts this software agp overclock do? lets crank it up to 70 to see what it does."

"OK"

mouse stops working.... unrecognized usb devices!!! SWEET>..

do i have to RMA the board if i want them working? or can i flash it?? im not sure what to do... im using backup devices now that came with the PCI slot extension ... that suffice... but it just sucks have 2 usb and not 4 (or 6 for that matter)

-j5

p.s. on a more positive note, I got my usb mouse (mx310) working @ 500hz with a modded usbport.sys

(no, the two events are not connected... my mouse stopped working RIGHT after i clicked "OK" for the nvidia prog.. my mouse had been working all day fine with the fix.)

i can send the .rar with mouserate checker prog as well as the modded usbport.sys files to those who request it. again, this is addressing the refresh rate in hz of the mouse by the comp... default for USB is 125hz... usb is 200hz .. i hex-edited the usbport.sys file and changed one string so now my mouse reads at 500hz (432 average).. much better than before.

hollar at me if you want it.
