do i have to RMA the board if i want them working? or can i flash it?? im not sure what to do... im using backup devices now that came with the PCI slot extension ... that suffice... but it just sucks have 2 usb and not 4 (or 6 for that matter)

p.s. on a more positive note, I got my usb mouse (mx310) working @ 500hz with a modded usbport.sys

(no, the two events are not connected... my mouse stopped working RIGHT after i clicked "OK" for the nvidia prog.. my mouse had been working all day fine with the fix.)

i can send the .rar with mouserate checker prog as well as the modded usbport.sys files to those who request it. again, this is addressing the refresh rate in hz of the mouse by the comp... default for USB is 125hz... usb is 200hz .. i hex-edited the usbport.sys file and changed one string so now my mouse reads at 500hz (432 average).. much better than before.

hollar at me if you want it.

Does overclocking the AGP bus help at all? I was under the impression that running agp/pci/sata devices at above spec is a risky endevour.

RMA's shouldn't be a problem. and they might give you a revision 1.05 board with 2.8vdimm

the store where I bought my parts... the ppl that work there know that i was planning to OC my system; will that effect my ability to RMA the board?

do i just go in and tell them that I want to RMA it? man i hate taking my system apart... and waiting to get a new mobo

(would the store give me another, or would i have to wait for one back from the company?)

lol. i dont think it was the best idea to tell the store guys you were planning on running your system out of spec and thus possibly subjecting it to greater stress than is normal...

and many people on Anandtech are against the idea of RMAing overclocked merchandise... you may get a flood of angry PMs now, heh.

hrmm... no flood of angry messages based upon what I'm thinking of doing... i'll wait some more; they may still come, no?

as far as telling the store ppl i'm running my system out of spec - i didn't. that's neither here nor there... my questions stands: can the store deny me the ability to RMA the board?

I was wondering if anybody knows what the v1006 bios actually does. The Asus site says fixed sata hdd detection to Nvidia chipset. What does that mean? My 1005 bios is detecting the sata hdd just fine....

that sounds more like a general question, rather than a technical question regarding this particular motherboard. Go to the General Forum.

Because your question has absolutely nothing to do with this motherboard and everything to do with the store you bought it in.

My-oh-my, they make newbies thick in the head these days, don't they?

ok, so I was trying to play some HL2 today and it was crashing a bit. Started investigating and noticed my AGP bus was at 75MHz according to the NVIDIA system monitor utility despite being set at 66mhz in the bios. I'm not trying to overclock at all. So i turn it back down to 66 via the NVIDIA overclock util to see if this will fix my issues. Well suddenly all my USB devices, including keyboard and mouse, are no longer responding. So i hit the poewr button to shut down properly (thank god for ACPI power buttons) and the bios no longer sees my keyboard either, nor does it work in windows. Obviously i can't get into the bios with no keyboard, so now i'm stuck. Any ideas guys? Why the AGP bus was at 75mhz in the first place or about the keyboard/USB thing? Oh, windows does show a little USB logo in the systray when i plug something in, but it never works or does anything else besides show the logo.

System has never been overclocked. Rev 1.04 board with bios rev 1004. System just built this weekend, running Win XP SP2. 1 GB of OCZ mem, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AIW. Athlon 64 3400+. 400W PSU. Running cool n quiet and qfan (was going to disable these next but now i can't).

*edit* just tried resetting the CMOS as well. No luck. And now I've got that stupid voice POST yelling at me which is only making things worse.

we have the exact same problem; read my thread above... its not the devices - don't worry. If you open device manager and plug/un-plug your usb devices you will notice that they appear as an "unrecognized device"... and thus, won't work and disappear.

i think it's a hardware issue and the ports were actually fried.. its not something like clearing the cmos to fix it.

then the question... to RMA or not to RMA. if you want a quick fix, you should have gotten an additional gameport combined 2usb devices that you plug into the base of the motherboard (looking in the case, facing up). you can use this .. it's usb2.0 and as fully functional as the onboard devices. (check your motherboard manual for more info on installation).

yes, i saw your post beflythis which is what prompted me to post here. however, i've tried it with ports that i didn't use when trying to set my AGP back to 66 and still no luck. With the CMOS reset i feel like i should be back to default speeds (even though that's what they were set for before) and i'm not even letting windows boot any more (HD unplugged), so there's no reason whatsoever that AGP is running at anything other than default (it shouldn't have been before but did anyway, although it worked fine at the higher speed, go figure).

does any of that even make sense? if i can't get it working soon, it'll be time to RMA. ugh.

*edit* tried the ports you mentioned that are on the slot panel with the joystick - no luck. all my ports are completely dead as far as i can tell. about to test the keyboard/mouse on another system....

well another update - after leaving it unplugged for a while, i have USB back. I have no idea why, i did nothing. I just hope this continues working. I'll be investigating this whole AGP at 75mhz by default thing more later, but I konw i won't be using that NVIDIA system utility any more, that's for sure.

PS - i've been hearing about this dimm voltage only up to. 2.7 on rev 1.04 boards. i'm assuming i don't need to care about this if i'm not overclocking?

how long did you leave it unplugged for? this greatly interests me.... (also, what did you unplug? power?)

another question (for anyone who can answer it)- what's the probability that, if I RMA'd my board, I'd get a 1.05 (newer revision) instead of another 1.04?? would the store give me another one they had in stock, or would they wait for the manufacturer to send another one back?

-beflythis

p.s. i'm also curious if anyone has tried the 1.07 bios - pls post results if you have!! (maybe ill get the courage to try it myself)

EDIT: i followed LX's advice from a private msg he sent me and left my power off for a while and unplugged power from the psu. When I booted, I had fully functionality of all usb ports (including the 2 extra that I installed cause i thought I needed backup).

beflythis - guess you figured it out. Just unplugged AC power from the PSU for i dunno maybe an hour or so and it worked again. None of it makes any sense, but hey, my system is back so i'm not complaining

BTW - anyone know why my AGP bus is running at 75mhz no matter what I set it to in the BIOS. I have zero interest in overclocking and stability is key, so I'd like everything running at stock speeds.

what are you using to determine the speed of your agp bus? Try running clockgen (from cpuz) and see what it says your agp speed is, it may just be that the utility you are using is misreading it.

I was messing around with the BIOSes on the weekend and found an interesting fact; the best BIOS for overclocking seems to be 1004 final, not 1005 which is what most people are using right now.

So if you don't need any of the bugfixes from 1005, consider going with 1004 if you want to do some serious overclocking.

As proof, let me just say that with 1004 I could run my HTT frequency reliably up to 275mhz. With 1005, it hard-crashed at 270mhz and I had to reset CMOS to recover. So I didn't even want to try anything in the 260's because its a pain to constantly reset CMOS.

However, 1005 seems to be working fine with 250 HTT. I might try pushing it up to 257 or so, but I don't want to risk it hard-locking again...

Is there anyone out there who can run BIOS 1004 with the SI RAID without problems @ winxp?

i wasn't aware that SI RAID had problems with the 1004 bios.

what problems are they exactly?

I think it was related to the SI RAID because first I used the NV raid, no problems at all with the earlier BIOS:es. But then I changed to the SI RAID and when Windows couldn+t load properly all the time (after a fresh install). But as soon as I fixed a BETA version of BIOS 1006, my booting probs was gone.
Can+t tell for sure that it was RAID related, but I think so because that was the only drivers I´ve changed in my system.

Hy all.

I'm just wondering what's you max HTT with HT set to 4X.

That because I can reach a max HTT of about 275 but with HT=3X, while having big problems with HT=4X

Also, I want to connect my front panel audio.
Which is the difference between LINE_OUT and BLINE_OUT? Which do have I to connect to my front panel jack? (page 2-28)
Do I have to connect my microphone jack to MIC2 or MICPWR?
Wich is the difference between this two pins?
The AGND pin is for grounding both line and mic?

Many thanks.

Saruman,

Your experience corresponds with most other people's. When using HT=3x I was able to get to HTT=275 with the 1004 BIOS. With HT=4x, I never personally tried greater than 210 -- but most other people say 210-215 was the max anyway.

Use LINE_OUT, and as for the mic jacks you should have more than 1 coming from the case... cant remember which ones I used, just guessed and managed to guess correctly. i don't thjink you can damage anythign by using the wrong pins, it would just not work.

I'm new to this thread, and have slogged through 23 pages of posts to see if I could find an answer to a problem that I have with my K8N-E. I bought the board back at the end of July. I initially installed Windows XP with SP1. When I attempted to install SP2, the install went fine, but upon reboot, I couldn't get Windows to load. The unhelpful tech support at ASUS basically said they were aware of the problem but didn't have a fix for it. This was around the beginning of September. Three months has gone by and I called them again yesterday, still no fix, and none in sight. I'm steamed. I'm also hesitant to try again (I upgraded to 1006 BIOS on Monday, but after reading some posts I think I will go back to 1005...can I reliably do this without screwing up anything?), since there is no indication that the issue has been worked on in BIOS revisions since I initially had the problem.

First question: has anyone else run into issues with this board and installing SP2?
Second question: I read a few posts about a "slipstreamed CD" version of SP2...anyone know what this is, and if this is any different than the version I would download from microsoft's site?

Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.
