try manualy setting the memory timings, and memory voltage, up it to 2.7 and set timings to 2.5-3-3-8 see if that works, if it does keep decreasing timings until you are satisfied. If not try 3-3-3-11, if that still fails then your board is probably faulty, though you could try reflashing the bios (original is on the cd) as maybe something got corrupted.

The defaults were 2 2 2 5. I did try and set it to 2, 3, 2, 8 and the voltage to 2.7v (the max settings). I've tried loading defaults etc, and everytime no matter what I do, I exit/save and the thing wont post. I have to clear CMOS for it to post again.

I am using the original bios btw. Do you think that because my memory is supposed to use 2.8v that because it's only getting 2.7v it's not posting?

Also... this is a dumb question, but I have asked on futuremark and called Asus tech support about this..

On the back of the motherboard is a silver metal shield directly under where the CPU sits. I was told by both Asus tech support and a guy on futuremark to leave this on. Was this a correct assumption?

that strengthes the motherboard so the weight of the heatsink does not cause damage so leave it. Your memory needs 2.8 to run at 2-2-2-5, seriously try lowering it to 3-3-3-8 and reseting, if that works then its a memory voltage issue, if that still fails then its probably not a memory thing.

you could also try lowreing memory to 333 in bios, it may be able to hit better timings at 333 then at 400 (it should anyway), also if you are planning on keeping good timings and overclocking you will need to lower it anyway.

I can try that. I don't remember seeing a way to lower it from 200 though. I'll look for into it tomorrow and post back.

I'm glad that metal thing was supposed to stay on, I thought it odd as it wasn't on my last 2 motherboards. =)

Thx.

memory control is under chipset settings. Motherboards didnt use to come with backplates, but heatsinks didnt use to weigh as much, with them pushing 1-2 pounds on high end ones, motherboards arent made to take that, so backplates are necessary. Though most top ones come with their own backplate, so you have to remove the one that came with the baord and install the one that came with the heatsink (real pain in the neck when they do us the favor of glueing it on).

just updated the bios, no new settings available (that i saw anyway). Running prime at highest stable with old bios now, will ramp it up tomorrow and see if i get anything different.

Just curious, what did you set your AGP voltage to? The default is 1.5v? I have been leaving it on that, could lower voltage be causing my post issues?

I tried relaxing the ram timings to 3 3 3 8 and 2.7v with no luck. I don't see where you can lower the CPU fsb to 166 though, I only see a 200 - 400 range. Where are the CPU multipliers too? I enabled cool n quiet and i went to the jumperfree setting and changed to all manual but I didn't see multipliers.

cpu multipliers are right on jumperfree but it starts at the frequency of your processor and gives you the acutal frequency after the mutliplier (assuming fsb of 200), so if you have a 3200+ with 1meg cache it will say 2000mhz, and give you options for 400-2000 ranging by 100 (half mutlipliers are included)...

Agp voltage shouldnt be an issue, uner chipset you can change memory mutliplier (200-400, where 200 is half of cpu multiplier and 400 is 1:1).

Quick question, have you checked the power cables to the board, are both making good connections?

Wow, So a ASUS k8V SE can do better than the ASUS Nforce 3? That's not looking good.

also if its off turn the voice error promt on, and if you are using the built in sound, make sure your speakers are on and volume is relatively up. See what it says, if its a hardware issue it will probably report it.

Will the voice error prompt start when I just enable it or do I first have to exit/save changes?

I'm starting to think this board was DOA... I mean aside from the CMOS reporting something... it just doesn't do jack. No matter what settings I save....

I've lowered the memory to 333 timings 3 3 3 10 at 2.7v... I've tried using a stick of memory from a different system w/ the same settings.... same result.

The bios detects everything right.... but it just wont post again when any changes are made. I've also bought a new battery thinking that might have been the problem.

Damn this motherboard!!!!

Also yes, the two power connectors are both full in as they should be. The fans wouldn't have been running otherwise.

you have to save and retart, even if it wont post on restart it might say why. Could very well be that the board is doa. Though strange that you can make it into the bios.

Yea I thought it odd too.. no idea.. Does the 1002 bios enable a 2.8v option for the ram?

cant get the 1002 bios to work. I dont think the beta of 1003 that i am using has it though, will check after next reboot.

Hey guys, I dont know what the prob is with all the k8n-e but mine is working flawlessly. Ever since boot its ran like a champ. On the 01 and 02 bios no probs. My OC results are awesome as well. So far i am on the default voltage on all settings with a 230 FSB. Im using a amd64 3000+ with kingmax pc4000 ram.

I cant get any higher then 230 fsb with any voltage. maybe its the ram, but im happy with it right now best of luck.

what sata ports are you using, what drivers do you have installed? Ie did you install the asus cool and quite driver, amd's processor driver, using nvidia or silicone image sata ports... Any info might help the rest of us. Also could you try lowering your ram to 333 and see if you can push the fsb higher? Thanks.

yep, we need a review, with a list of what works and doesnt, what settings to tweak. And asus needs to get a bios with htt control out.

More details:
System Specs:

a64 3000+
512 kingmax pc4000 500mhz
radeon 9800pro
80gb maxtor HDD
2 Burners
Venus12 HSF
As3 on Northbride HS

I installed all the drivers from the CD and updated them all through the Asus site. The thing is i dont have time to thouroughly OC the mobo, but do in 30 min spurts heh. But right now im stuck at 230 FSB. I tried putting the mem to 333 and bumping up the FSB, but no go. I dont know why. I push more voltage in the memory and the vcore but no go. I dont kow how to decrease the muliplier, so i haven't gone there yet. I dont think its the memory holding me back. The speed of the memory bus isn't even close to spec on the Kingmax ram i have. I put all the latency down on the ram as well.

I am using onboard sounds as well. Everything seems to work. (except for the HDD led, to lazy to go and see whats wrong though) I am more then happy except i upgraded to get halo to run smoothly at 1280*1024, and i haven't yet. I dont kow if its my video card or if somthing is wrong with the cool and quiet. I was runnning the same comp now but with a 2.2 p4, and the a64 at the same speeds kicks the p4's butt.

enabling cool and quite in bios lets you deal with mutlipliers (though it doesnt say 1-10, it says 400-2000) which corresponds to 2-10

yeah i saw that, but when i put it on 800mhz CPUid and CPUclk recognize it at full speed

have you tried benchmarking it with it set to 800mhz. It may be they are just recognzing the processor and not the actual clockspeed. Or it may be that the mutliplier isint working on your board(or processor).

1003 beta 5 is now on asus's site, not sure what it does differently and wont have a chance to try it till later today (possibly not for a week as i am going on a trip tomorrow and if i cant deal with it tonight wont be back till the following thursday). At least we know 1003 should be out soon, and they are working on stuff, even if they havent fixed the main issues yet.
