my advice, is that if you've tried multiple "known good" PS/2 keyboards and none work... you have a defective board. btw just for fun, try plugging the keyboard into the PS/2 mouse port and see what happens.

a usb keyboard will probably work (dunno if it works in BIOS without changing a certain setting though) i wouldn't bother though

Hi,

I recently bought the K8N-E Deluxe mobo and 2 512MB Transcend DIMMs. In which slots of the mobo do I insert the DIMMs. The manual suggests the blue one if I have only 1 dimm. Does that mean, I use the other 2 when I have two?

Does any of this DIMM placement affect performance?

as i recall, the mobo manual has a chart which indicates all the possible permutations that the 3 DIMM sockets can be used in. also, the mobo should indicate which dimm socket is #1, 2, 3.

I currently have my 2 dimm's in #1 and #2. i will probably try #1 and #3 later, since some people reported better overclocking in that configuration. for stock speeds, #1 & #2 will be fine.

hitting 256 fsb must be pretty good!

I'm leaning towards this mobo for my next system. I'd prefer not including a floppy drive (really have no use for them), but I understand that XP requires a driver install before it can recognize a SATA drive. Does the Asus bios allow a USB device (such as a flash drive) to be selected as a boot device? I attempted to preview the motherboard manual at the Asus web site, but I kept getting errors when trying to open the pdf file with Acrobat--therefore I'm here bugging you guys. Thanks in advance.

augen, not 100% sure but I think if you have a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 install CD, SATA will work fine.
better wait for confirmation from one of the others, though.

Hey K8N-E experts,

I've got this board with a 3000+ newcastle and Kingston PC3200 512MB DRAM (single).

But according to CPU-Z its only runing at a frequency of 167mhz, even though SPD (via cpu-z) says it'll do 200mhz. It lists some formula of CPU/12 as the reason, and the number work out.

So, without even overclocking (yet), this system can't take advantage of the memory I bought for it? How can I change that number from 12 to 10?

whos going to be the guinea pig for the beta bios? I would do it except my memory is being RMAed to mushkin. I hoped they fixed the vdimm, if not i have a DFI sitting on the floor.

i will probably install it the moment it is on asus's main download area instead of off of thier ftp (tends to be safe once it is up their but as I have a dtr and it is possible that the update could break that I will wait). Generaly they have the regular update available within a few days of the beta (ie early next week should be expected) so you could just wait till then (when they actualy tell us what the update is), hopefully it involves memory voltage

I didn't need a floppy for my sata drive when I installed XP Pro.

Can someone comment on getting my memory to run at 200Mhz? Please read my comments above, even SPD recognizes it can do 200, but it runs at 167.....

Comments?

I just got this board in combination with a AMD 64 3200+ Newcastle and 2x512MB PC3200 DDR-400 TwinMos and a 9500 PRO.
When I play a quake 3 mod (urban terror) I my systeem freezes for 4 seconds every 5 or 10 minutes. Does anyone know what the cause could be?
I installed the lasted nForce and ATI drivers, am I forgetting something? I did not have this problem on my old setup (P4/MSI-6701/PC2700/9500 PRO).

Fab1an,

Sounds like the old PunkBuster problem.

Bob151,

In the "Chipset config" screen in the BIOS, you can choose what speed to run mem at. Choose 400.
Use the latest version of clockgen or CPU-Z to verify the mem is running at 400.

Done that. I thought from the manual or the wording in the BIOS that was a (upper) limit. Still runs at 166, even though SPD says it can do 200. The divider is 12.... I'd like to change it to 10.

Bob151 how old is that memory? Some of the earlier pc3200 was actually pc 2700 that was rated to run at pc3200 speeds (I had some corsair like that), a lot of the newer boards wont run properly with that memory, so your options are to either lower the processor multiplier and up fsb so you can keep processor at close to stock and run memory at appropriate speed, or call Kingston and see if they have a fix. If the memory was bought recently I would rma it and get something better (anandtech has a review of high quality a64 memory up this week).

Bob151, you need to go into the bios and manuely specify what speed your memory is running at, w/ A64 Memory allways runs Asysnc from the CPU clock but it's based on a divider which is adjustable in the bios I belive it's under chipset configuration, but it depends on what bios version you have as they altered the way this is done from bios 1001 to later bioses. (eg in the orgianl bios it was a divider I belive but now it's a bus speed, eg 400, 433 ect... although I could have that reversed) Hope this helps...

I thought you only put DIMMs in slot 1/3 if you can get better stability/OC that way.

Is that why you put them there or was it just for the hell of it?

I've got mine in slots 1/2, everything is fine...

Anyways referring to your online gaming problem, it's most definitely the old PunkBuster issue which still exists on most NForce3 boards and even a number of VIA A64 boards.

I dont think there is any definitive answer on why it happens.

Someone said they might over clock better in 1/3, so I put them there, I'm not overclocking but I figured they might be cooler because they are not right next to eachother. I'll put them in 1/2 to see if that helps any. I'm also gonna try playing on a server without punkbuster.
