yup. lots of issues with PB and A64 mobos/chipsets at the moment.
there's nothing you can do about it.

some people reported success by playing with settings in the BIOS, but there is no definite pattern to it, so it's all just a crapshoot!

With my setup, I am maxed (Prime stable) at these 2 scenarios-which is better?

K8N-E 1005
CG Clawhammer 3000+ (XP-120)
1GB OCZ Gold Rev. 2 PC-4000

I can do:

220FSB with 2-2-2-10 (1.55V)
*or*
230FSB with 2.5-4-4-10 (1.65V)

Which will perform better?

Thanks! Man I wish this board OC'd better!

If the memory was bought recently I would rma it and get something better (anandtech has a review of high quality a64 memory up this week).

Where is the multiplier? Is that the "FID/VIN" variable setting in the BIOS (I may have it wrong, but the manual says nothing about that)?

yep fid/vid refers to mutliplier along with voltage settings. If you have any stability issues when changing fsb (but keeping total clockspeed close to stock, ie just upping memory to 200) then up memory voltage to 2.6 or 2.7 from 2.5.

The highest multiplier available to me is 10.

My memory was made 7th week 2002 according to CPUz

ok, your memory is effectively at 5:6, so to get to 200 you will need an fsb of 240, since your max multiplier is 10, which is stock, you will want to go to 8 * 240, which will leave you with a clockspeed of 1920 vs. 2000, and memory at 200, or you could try 9 for a slight overclock to 2160, but make sure you have adequate cooling. Definitely try giving Kingston a call or posting to their forums, and if you can return the memory you might want to. They may also allow you to rma it for something more recent that will work properly with this board.

Thanks jkresh,

Ah.... I thought there was some way to force the memory to run at a certain speed. I could swear the ratio can be changed on other motherbaords, I just couldn't find it on this one.

Not on this one! Two bad boards and the ratio is auto'ed to boot.

Memory is 7th week 2002. And I just bought it from Fry's Outpost.com a few months back.

There is a way to change memory multipliers on this board, it just doesn?t work with some older pc3200 (i.e. stuff that was made before the standard was out and as such is really overclocked pc2700); same is true with most a64 boards.

I have been surprised by the low overclock performances I could get out of my Asus K8N-E Deluxe.

My system:
Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2G 640K cache
K8N-E Deluxe, BIOS 1004
512 + 256 M S3 DDR 500
Matrox 80 M PATA 133

First I tried to find out max speed of the processor:

HT=3/4
DDR 333 MHz
VCore 1.75V, V.DDR 2.7 V

The processor cant go further than 2.4GHz, a mere 9% overclock, But I was even more surprised by the RAM:

HT=3/4
DDR 400 MHz
VCore 1.75V, V.DDR 2.7 V
Multi= 8.0 (instead of 11)

The system is stable only up to 212 MHz, 424 MHz for a DDR500, at default parameters (CAS=3,...)!!!!

Now it runs with multiplier 10, 2.4 G for the CPU and 400 Mhz for the RAM, anything more and it get frozen or resetted!!

Temperature was 44'C at stock, now is 52.

Any suggestion to overcome these poor performances is welcome.

try switching memory to 1,3 instead of 1,2 (if they are in 1,2 now) or with only 1 stick of memory. Those overclocks dont sound board limited, you may simply have gotten a processor that doesnt overclock well. Also note that on air cooling its rair to find a 754 that will go above 2.5 with any stability.

kresh, my XP-90 is coming in a few days going to see how far I can take my 3000+. right now i have no problems achieving 2420mhz with 100% stability in memtest, Prime95, Doom3 etc. -- with stock cooler. hopefully with an XP90 + AS5 + Panaflo... 2550's my minimum goal.

actually, even playing doom3 @ 2420 with stock cooler only gets me 50 C cpu core temp.. wonder if it really is just 50 C or if the K8N-E's sensor is underreporting. running seti overnight gives me 52 C or thereabouts.

Has anyone been able to install Windows XP 64-bit on this motherboard? I get a BSOD during the setup. I've searched a bit on google and it seems some other people have had it too, all with K8N-E.

Yes, now memory is 1,2, I'll give a try moving sticks around.
I have done some more tests and seen that, under heavy load, CPU temp. can reach 55°C with air
cooling. Do you think that this temp. can impair stability? I mean dunno if a better cooling can give some advantage in my system.
Thanks for your answer!

55C is not that bad, better cooling will help in the long run but it most likely won?t greatly increase your maximum overclock. Switching memory to 1, 3 should help though.

Do you think 1,3 is better than 1.2 ? Reading the manual doesn't give this information ... anyone has facts abour that ?

Did somebody try the beta 1006 bios whose dld link appeared in a post ?

Careful with the new BIOS, folks!

I'm hearing that it wipes out your old (unique) MAC address (on the built-in LAN NIC) and replaces it with "something generic".

If you use the on-board LAN, stay away from the BIOS for now - hopefully when it's made final by Asus, it won't have this "feature" (why would they want to wipe out everyone's MAC address anyways?).

is it 1006.005 that is causing those problems (the one from teh ftp), or 1006.008 which is now available from asus off of the download section for the k8n-e?
