I thought this might be a nice time to start a thread on the Asus P6T Series Motherboards. This board comes in many flavors and has the potential to be a superb OC'er...So let the party begin.

I'll start off in that my first v2 had severe thermal issues. I'm not sure if this is a v2 issue, or an x58 issue across the board, but as it turned out, the actual cpu clamp assy was too loose on the MB, allowing it to rise level or above the surface of the cpu when latched. I ended up smoking a 920 due to this.

The system would boot and stay up for 20-40 seconds or so...then just shut off. Would not restart until all the thermals came back down. I didn't realize this until I noticed that the TIM was not really looking "smashed". I installed the stock cooler which has a smaller base, and the system booted and stayed up. I was able to flash to bios 0203, and load windows...but the cpu finally shutdown and was dead.

The latest bios has taken me from a stable bclock of 180 to 200. I have finished 36hr's or Seti crunching and prime running 18x200 without any issues. System also passed 20 linpak runs without issues.

This is great news as it allows DDR-1600 users to keep the bclock at the rated spec while still pulling a decent (3.6Ghz) OC.

does anyone know if all of the SATA ports run on the main bus? I'm having issues with some UV SATA2 cables with clips on them unable to seed into the ports all of the way. I am considering using ports 5 and 6 that face toward the RAM but I was concerned with possible reduced performance if they are on a different bus.

I just noticed your sig...so I'm wondering if you are talking about the P6T series or not.

I have the same problem on the P6Tv2. I used one of my locking cables on port 6 and it works fine...not sure why the 4-90 degree ports are smaller in size.

And yes, they all run off the Intel Chipset.

Thanks for that confirmation Tweakin. I am currently using the standard SATA cables that came with the MOBO but I wanted to use theseUV cablesbut they wouldn't seed correctly into ports 1 and 2. I got frustrated and just used the crappy cables ASUS supplied with the board so I could boot. So far I only have XP installed getting updates then moving on to my Vista install. I think I will use 2 of my locking SATA 2 cables on ports 5 and 6 and sort out the rest later.

I will update my sig when the build is complete but it consists of the following
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
core i7 920 Batch 3841A525
6 Gigs Corsair Dominator DDR3/1600
TRUE 120
640 Gig WD Caviar Black
500 Gig Seagate Baracuda
LG GB H20L Blu-ray drive
eVGA 8800GT SC (to be replaced)
SB X-FI Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series
Corsair HX 1000 Watt PSU
Vista 64 Home Premium
Coolermast ATCS 840

Alright, so, P6T Deluxe...

I may be an odd-ball. I'm actually using my SAS ports.

ASUS P6T-Deluxe
i7 920
2G x6 Patriot DDR3 10666 (I think)
HVR-1800
GTX 295 (Evga)
Generic 802.11N wireless card (going to be removed because it sucks ass)
Antec 850 PS
2x Seagate 15K 147G SAS HDD - Mirror
2x WD6400AAKS - Software mirror
Generic internal card reader/floppy combo drive
LianLi PC60-WFsomething
Cooler Master V8 heatsin/fan

I'm running stock settings at the moment. I don't recall bios revisions at the moment, but I was running at ~3.33 without issue. Then I did a bios update, and can't seem to reach it again. Don't really care at the moment. I may try again later.

Have you pulled a throughput test out of the SAS ports yet? I was really tempted to get that board as I have an older Fujutsi SAS 15k drive lying around...don't even know where it is at the moment...but I love SAS drives.

anyone here uses a 775 HSF with this board? how is the cooling and temperature using the older HSFs?

you will definitely need the new bracket and mounting kit for the i7, the Noctua NH-U12P does well with its new kit.

Has the BIOS updates helped the bclocks this much? I am still running the 0804 BIOS, and I could never get above 185ish Bclock without the system hitting a wall and not booting at all. I feel pretty stable at 3.8, but have been mulling a BIOS update to see if it would help me get a better OC or not....

I have the v2 board, which has slightly different bios revisions so I can't really comment on that. I will say that I run a 200bclock without issues and have stabalized three differnt configurations, 32., 3.6, and 3.8 using the 200bclock. I can even use the sleep function if I leave HT off.

I started putting together my system a couple of days ago. When installing the CPU, I just felt that the CPU clamp assembly was loose on the motherboard. Maybe this is the intended design to allow the CPU to align itself with the board with the clamp only providing the downward force.

My first board P6T Deluxe v2 board was DOA. The second one booted fine. With the second one, I was paid a lot more attention to how the CPU was installed. This board had the sloppy clamp as well. I did notice that after the CPU was clamped down, the lever was actually bending from the force required to latch it. I took a straight edge to see if the high point of the bend was below the CPU face. It wasn't. If you use the stock cooler, this is a non-issue. I was using the Asetek LCLC and the larger cooling interface is very close to the lever.

This may be a possible cause for Tweakin's thermal issue.

I just finished installing Windows on my system but have yet to put it through its paces. That will be the true test of how stable this sytem is going to be.

My system:
Cosmos S
i7-920
Asetek LCLC
P6T Deluxe v2
CORSAIR XMS3 6GB
eVGA GTS 285 x2
Silverstone OP-1000E
OCZ Vertex SSD 60GB
WD Velociraptor 300GB
Vista 64b Home Premium

Sometimes i do miss the ZIF sockets; these brackets can be touchy.

I didn't have any issues with installing my system, but as others stated, if temps are out of control, bad contact between the CPU and HS could be to blame.

Yup...that's how my first clamp was...really loose and sloppy. My second board has much more torque on the lever, and I used a straight edge to make sure the cpu was above the assy...and it is but not by much.

Hi guys...im NEW...i think i'll just jump right in. Thanks.

So, when I clamped my CPU in, I had to use a bit of force, to bring the lever down to get it locked in, I was a bit worried, as it was the first CPU I have connected to a MB. Also, I am using a Monsoon III LT, I was inbetween the Monsoon and the Noctua NH-U12P, but went with the Monsoon obviously, now after seeing some reviews of fan coolers, its looking like the Noctua would of been a better bet. Any words of comfort?

Also wanted to ask if anyone has had an issue with Everest, it installed fine, but when I start it up, it goes through its initial detection of CPU and memory and such, but then just dies and goes to a blue screen. Then the screen goes blank. I have to reboot. It does this every time. I looked around online to see if anyone else had similar problems but only found a few instances, and they didnt sound exactly like my case. Im not sure what this is. The blue screen goes by so fast, that I cant read the whole thing, but it says " there is a problem...." Obviously!!!! There is a problem..the big clue to me is that Everest is initializing and analyzing the system...and then boom, blue screen, blank.

Any Ideas? I have used Prime, but only for about 30 minutes. When I watch the CPU temp go up, it scares me, so I stop it. I just dont want to hurt the hardware. I let it get up to about 79 C and also the motherboard gets hot to. So basically my question is, What temps of Motherboard and CPU are too much?

Ok so I just downloaded the official TRIAL copy of the new Everest Ultimate 500 from their website, and it works fine, It wont let u benchmark, but thats fine, atleast it started up. No blue screen. Maybee it was the version of Everest that I had. I think it was everest home edition, it was probably an really old version. I got it from some link in another forum. Anyways..this is a bit comforting. Too bad they want 50 bucks for this program. Where did u guys get your copy?

Still would like some imput on what kind of temps u guys are seeing at a MaX and Min values for CPU and MB.

I had one of those Monsoon III's...really weak heat sink. The top cooler is the TRUE Ultra xTreme (but I hate the mounting system), and then you have the Noctua and Xigmatek's. I really like the Noctua for the quietness and the mounting system...it's rock stable. The Noctua is also the lightest of the current crop of coolers...I never could stand hanging 800 ounces off the board...

Everest is "THE" utility to have if you are into OC'ing! It almost sounds like you are running into a thermal overload protection on your rig.

Since you are running a i7, welcome to the world of really high temps. 70's are normal for that chip under air, 79 is pushing it and not worthy for 24/7. Those temps are not any better then the stock sink, and while the Monsoon is not great, it should beat out the stock cooler. Try a remount of the sink and see what happens...

Ok, So I think I will hold off on playing with the cooler for now. I got the new version of Everest Ultimate Edition, and it works great. I like how it displays all temps especially the GPU temps and its memory temps as well. I couldnt find anywhere else where it would tell me how hot the video cards were getting. So anyways, im glad i got Everest working fine now.

So also I tried overclocking last night using the information I got from hardocp.com:

Turbo mode =off
AI overclock Tuner =manual
Intel Speedstep Tech =disabled
BLCK Freq =190
DRAM FREQ =DDR3 - 1523Mhz
CPU Voltage =1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage =1.66

Am I missing anything else here?

It worked out great, I was running at 3.8 Ghz with the x20 multiplier still.
I ran Prime95 for about 10 minutes and the temps went through the roof for the CPU, almost to 90 C so I had to stop it. Temps fell quickly when I stopped. So, when the temp goes that high, does it mean the OC'd CPU is not stable? Is it my cooler again? The guy on hardOCP.com was using a water cooling system, so im wondering if that is necessary to keep the 2.67 @ 3.8 and stay stable?

I think im going to try it again today, and see if i get similar results.

This isnt a very active thread is it?

Anyways..atleast I got a response from Tweakin...just hope you aint really tweakin dude...haha..just kiddin, bad joke.

So I was just curious as to what BIOS you were runnin, I have stuck with the original one (0203)?..i think thats what it is. Anyways, just wondering, I have read some in other discussions that it helps in some ways. Im not sure...

One other thing...I seem to be getting a Negative tempurature read on my MotherBoard using both AI Suite and PC Probe II, both of which came on the ASUS CD. So sometimes its negative and then sometimes its not...when its negative i get nervous. Any thoughts?

I had the V2 but unfortunately i screwed up one of my ram slots. I replaced it with a Gigabyte EX58 Extreme but i cant seem to get a stable overclock at 3.8ghz like i had on my v2 sigh

Looks like a reliable source.

Here they compare the Prolimatech to the TRUE 120 Extreme...very close competition.

Thanks for the link here Caliturk! I had heard about this cooler, but had not seen any reviews of it yet. I like my Noctua, and it was pretty much the only premium cooler around at i7 launch, but this cooler really looks good. I might have to bite when I pick up a CPU upgrade at the end of this year/beginning of next year if this is still the 1136 "top dog". The price is right too; if the supply can get ramped-up, we should see the price actually around the MSRP of $50.00. That's a steal for this type of performance. Reminds me of when the Zalman 7700 was released way back for around this price and cooled pretty much any A64 just amazingly.

Picked up a P6T vanilla today and will be pairing it up with an i7 920 and a TRUE Black. Decided on this board due to price mainly ($230) but also because I've been very happy with my P5Q-E P45 board after a few rocky experiences with Asus.

My RAM should come in tomorrow, so I should have some preliminary results. I googled the batch for my i7 and it looks to be a solid overclocker, with a couple reports of 4GHz+ on air. My expectations aren't that high, I'd be happy with 3.8GHz or so but we'll see.

Edit: Quick question, anyone running this with the TRUE using LGA775 mounting bracket? I saw this board has holes for both 1366 and 775, just want to make sure there's no conflicts.

Sorry for the delay...been busy with my WC setup. Anyway, I immediately flashed my board to 0203...which is the latest version for v2 boards.

As for the negative temp things, I have never been a fan of MB suites, I use Real Temp and Everest and that's that...sorry.

Glad to see you picked up a nice cooler...let us know what your temps are.

There should be no problem using the 775 holes...Slap it on and fire it up! As for your reports of 4Ghz on air, I really think those are few and far between...way too much thermal power to keep cool under air at those speeds. I would say 24/7 is between 3.2 ~3.6Ghz, with those exceptions of low VID's who can hit 3.8Ghz while keeping the temps low...I know I couldn't.
