German but very well played and well Homeworld speaks for itself...

http://www.gamestar.de/videos/previews,18/homeworld-remastered,81561.html

Some features are missing but other are great additions like multiple command movements, formations implemented in Homeworld 2 etc.
Plus the version reviewed is still in the works so no final anything here.

Less than two weeks to release, goo!

So original engine, storyline, and missions, with updated textures?

How's the single player campaign in this game? Was always interested, never played.

Thanks. Price is still too high for me with current backlog and limited play time, but added to wishlist.

Excellent! Great storyline, dynamic gameplay, truly a genre defining game.

Wonder why they didn't rework Cataclysm. Would love to breathe life into a couple of these monsters.. http://shipyards.relicnews.com/somtaaw/dreadnought.htm

The source code to Cataclysm is entirely lost - nothing to remaster. Plus, Cata isn't considered canon.

Eh. Pretty much gonna wait til after release, see if anybody can confirm HW1 is still HW1, and not a campaign port to the slicker, but shallower HW2 engine.

I pre-ordered it on Steam.

Really wish I had just plunked down the cash for the Collectors Edition pre-order with the Mothership statue.

Original engine is only in the "Classic" versions, updated to run on recent systems of course.
The remastered itself is a improved and unified HW2 engine instead, with all the originals ~30 missions campaign and possibly both gameplay mechanics.
There's something different definitely, but it shouldn't be untolerable to accept.
Multiplayer beta is a big unknown as there are three ways to play: HW1 only, HW2 only and combined mode with 4 races. The latter will require many battles and proper balancing for sure, but anyone not interested can just avoid it.

Today is the day! You can pre-load the game, but it was still currently locked as of this morning. I guess I'll have to wait until after work.

After 15 years, it will be like coming home(world).

Odd man out, love RTS but never got into this one, had issues in early missions with resources (turtle- so sue me) I assume it was my playstyle, but i never seemed to be able to outgun the enemy due to resources. Any tips to make me see the light, I will be picking it up as all the love it gets makes me feel it deserves a second look.

Some slight changes to the mechanics of HW1 in the remastered version, HW2 remains mostly the same. Research is no longer free in HW1, but ship wreckage from larger ships is salvageable so there's more available income. Fuel is no longer a thing in HW1. There is a single UI used for both remastered versions. One review mentioned the formations from the first game being added to the second. Those are all of the gameplay changes I've read about, nothing so far that bothers me. I'm just excited to have the new coat of paint and the convenience of a Steam install.

The org. HW1 was easy, Make a bunch of fighters and salvage corvettes and steal everything else.
Nothing feels better then kicking an enemy arse with his own ships.

I never understood the appeal of mass capturing ships or even "perfect runs" of trying to capture every single ship. I have fun playing the game normally like it's an actual battle.

Funny, while the original HW is probably my favorite PC game of all time ... I never really got into HW 2. I feel the same way ...

I cant remember what mission it was as its been ages since that I last played it but there was one where there is was a huge sphere with ion ships.

I remember seeing how many of then I could capture just for fun, and I remember getting about say if there is 150, think i had about 40 or so of them

I remember 15+ years ago playing this game doing that. I captured everything I could. I didn't realize that on following missions the enemy fleet would scale to match the size of your own. The last mission was nearly unplayable since there were so many ships on the screen at one time.

Meh. From what I'm seeing, it's exactly what I feared - functionally it's Homeworld 2 remastered with a campaign port of Homeworld 1. Slick, but ultimately less powerful control of ships via formations vs behaviors.

Might check back if the classic edition becomes available separately, but didn't like HW2 anywhere near enough to buy it again.

Pretty sure that this also comes with both classic versions.

Unfortunately they unified the engine to HW2. I really didn't like HW2 as much as HW1 and cataclysm had the funest mechanics in skirmish modes. The formations just don't hold as well with the HW2 engine vs the former and you don't feel as in control of everything because of the groupings for the small fighters. The most awesome was claw or sphere formations actually make a static ball around a bigger ship and was just awesome.

Anyone have any luck opening up the .big files? In HW, Cataclysm and HW2 you could open them with BigVeiwer or Winbig but when I try to use those programs with the RM version I get an invalid file error.

For me one of the best parts of the original games was modifying the ship files, pretty much could make them do what you wanted if you knew what you were doing

So booted it up, never having played the game before. Did the tutorials and went to the first mission.

Built a scavenger and pulled in some wreckage. Easy enough. Checked my objectives and the remaining, and apparently first, objective was to mine an Asteroid. Ooops, not enough credits to build a mining ship because I built the scavenger first. Really? Time to restart mission, sigh...
