Yes.......please tell more.

How do you know it's dead?

These P4's have that thermal overload thing built in........they are not supposed to fry.

ok im back! but the 1.8a is history.

it just flat out died.

cold boot - no post.
clear bios to back into bios - no post.
empied the system, reseat everything - no post.
put my trusty p4 1.5@1.9 in to check the system - runs fine. (utoh)
put the 1.8a in another system - no post.

i was only running it @ 1.625 volts, temps were very low. (not that that means anything)
the system is/was in perfect shape, it didnt litterally fry or anything.
id say heat expansion, or electrical burnthru (so quickly?) was the culprit.
i check the chip carefully with a magnifying glass, and there is no damage that i can see.
i use artic silver and a thermaltake p4v.
its a retail, and ill be getting another, but i guess these thing are as fragile as they say - oh well.

1.9ghz seems so slow now

Just a note for those with the Gigabyte board...Someone over on hardocp replaced their Gigabyte with the Asus P4B266 and was able to clock their 1.6A about 130MHz higher. In some cases, I think the clock that one can attain may have more to do with the motherboard than the cooling.

Thugs,

This is the first report I have heard of a Northwood P4 meeting its maker...the P4 can't overheat, because it will clock throttle and turn itself off before it will ever die (unlike the Athlon), so I don't quite understand how that's even possible, unless the processor was defective in the first place. Thankfully, if your P4 is defective, as would seem the case, you just send it right to Intel for replacement. They don't ask any questions. Replacement takes about two weeks.

from what i can tell asus boards may give the wrong voltage.

almost all the asus boards people post are 1.6 volts or there abouts even at 133 fsb

thats my observation

Are we talking about that electromigration or something or another?? If the asus gave wrong ready you may been giving it much more juice and starting burning out transistors...

well,
the system is up and running with a 1.5@1.9 default voltage right now. everything "seems" fine. this "combo" has already proven itself stable for over 2 months to me. so anything that happens now, will definatly be new. i just have to wait and see if anything else weird happens.
i really dont think it was the system tho.

Well if 1.6 volts is bad, then shouldn't you be a little worried about your system? From your description you say its running at 1.8volts, and I thought that at around 1.65volts it was pushing it, but 1.8volts would be lethal to a P4 Northwood.

Nope, Tomshardware did not use NO2. Tomshardware used one of the lesser performing water cooling systems on the market. The "extreme cooling" with NO2 was used to hit 3400MHz to 3800MHz on the 2.2A.

Others have hit 3.0GHz and 3.1GHz using the AVC Sunflower and Swiftech heatsink on the 2.2A. I wouldn't touch the $500 2.2A with a 500 foot pole, however, when you can buy a 1.6A for $140 and run it at 2400MHz, and perhaps 2550-2700MHz with the stock Intel heatsink and an Asus P4B266 DDR motherboard. That said, after the May price drop, the 2.2A will drop to around $220 online, making it a more reasonable purchase for those wanting to hit 3.0GHz.

HAHA!!! Tom's HW wouldn't know the first thing about LN2(N2O = Nitrous Oxide = Make cars go faster). They used a watercooling system, and a crappy one at that.

Seems that Northwoods are hitting very high temps at high voltages(over 1.7V). IMO, a Peltier and WC setup would easily get a 2.2 to astronomical levels.

Of course, I would not drop that much cash for a chip to do crazy things to it, but there are some out there...

well, now that I have my video card working right, ive worked to see how high I can take my 1.6a.

my specs for those that didnt see them earlier

p4 1.6a @ 2.4, 1.55v, retail hs/f w/ artic silver
asus p4b266-c
256 high perf mushkin pc2100
gainward gf3, 210/550
sb audigy
30g maxtor ata100

have it running at 16x150, 2.4 ghz, 1.55v, cas 2226, 4x150=600mhz fsb. at this speed, my sandra 02 memory benches come close to rdram scores.

I dont know what temps im getting cause the asus cpu temp monitoring software always shows 40c, it doesnt change even when im running a sandra bench. I think its screwed up, maybe theres a bios fix.

this system was running really crappy at first, but I think it mightve been the 2311 dets cause ever since I went to the 2185's, things have run alot better. im running a gainward gf3, 210/550.

3dmark 2001 score for this setup, 8015. default settings.

sandra 02 scores:

cpu arith, dhrystone, 4495 mips, 1434/2946 mflops
cpu multimedia, int isse2 9489 it/s, fp isse2 11581 it/s
mem bandwidth, int buff isse2 2230 mb/s, float buff isse2 2191 mb/s

im really afraid to try any higher without knowing what my temps are, but nothing feels real hot inside and everything works ok.

I'm given it a bump^ Hopefully some will post here to keep the "All about" thread from becoming so bloated that it's daunting for people to peruse when looking for data!

CPU: 1.6A
Voltage: 1.525 (Asus Probe says 1.552 - 1.584)
Cooler: Stock - TIM removed (and that nasty piece of foil), lapped with 320-->600 grit, applied Arctic Silver 1 ($3 @ Bestbyte.net)
SL code: SL668
Fpo/Batch: H202035W
Location: (hhmmm, must be on the chip....)
Pack Date: 01/12/02
Motherboard: Asus P4S333 - BIOS from 8/21/01 or around there
FSB: 137 memory 1:1
Memory: Centon (C.C. stuff) 256DDR (VT chips) running at 2.0 - 2 - 2

2192mhz -- Had this running for 5 hours now. I really don't think I needed to boost the voltage, but I'm gonna burn in at these settings for a while anyway.
Temps w/no case fans running ---- edit: turned on lower case fan blowing in
1600mhz CPU = 40C mobo = 35C
2192mhz CPU = 40C mobo = 35C
2192mhz w/fan CPU = 40C mobo = 28C
2192mhz w/fan CPU = 48C mobo = 29C <-----Prime95
edit: added Prime95 for 1 hour / turned rear case fan on blowing in directly on heatsink/fan

2192mhz w/back fan also CPU = 42C mobo = 32C
2192mhz w/back fan idle CPU = 40C mobo = 30C
(may need to convert the rear fan or front fan to exhaust)
These are thru Asus Probe. gonna grab something more accurate eventually...

I also want to say I'm using a Powerman 250W(FPS250-60GTA) power supply/Inwin S500. Using a 4-pin molex for the 12V power on the Asus. That could be a reason for the fluctuations in VCore. Gonna game and benchmark. Will update in a few days. Good luck all.

Kroffty, I've been trying to follow all the threads, did you say what the FPO/batch number was on your Costa Rica chip? Mine is 3149A709, I wonder if some CS chipsbetter than others. Congrats on yours! I'm just reading while waiting on a HD to arrive to get mine running.

Ive also noticed fluctuations in my voltage and am also using my old atx ps, deere 300w, on my 266-C. I noticed on asusprobe that sometimes I get really sharp drops for a second or two and would hear a series of clicks from my mobo, then it would be fine again. weird

but, I got a little worried that my cheap ass ps might screw something up, so I backed my fsb down to 133, 1.5v. 2.13 is more than I ever thought id get out of this chip before I knew it was such a good oc'er.

also, sometimes on boot, it gives me a hardware error and freezes the boot, asking me to continue or enter setup. I would look in setup and sometimes it shows my voltage really high, like over 1.7 for a second or two. not good me thinks. but damn, 150 bucks for a good ps? I cant afford that after shelling out the cash for this setup

It's an overclocking database, so don't feel ashamed. Bragging goes in Adul's overclocking thread.

Some people might disagree with you there. *Is using the ABIT for northwood*

Single 512MB stick of Mushkin PC2100 DDR "High Performance" CL2 RAM running at 2-3-3
Using a single DIMM was an intelligent move given the difficulties that higher clocked SDRAM is having (including DDR).

I neglected to post this earlier.

CPU: Pentium 4 1.6A @ 2.4GHz
Voltage: 1.7v
Cooler: ACV Sunflower
SL Code: SL668
FPO/Batch: L157B286
Location: Malaysia
Pack Date: 1/20/2002
Mainboard: Asus P4T-EM (it's the mATX board)
