I know most people here do not give a crap, but I always watch the show (have since I was a kid) and can't help but get a little excited about it since I have typically seen most/all of the films nominated. Full list is here: http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/82/nominees.html

Anyway, the big one are here (not really any surprises):

A Serious Man

Jason Reitman for Up In The Air

Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson
Princess and the Frog, John Musker and Ron Clements
The Secret Kells, Tomm Moore
Up, Pete Docter

Glad to see A Serious Man get some recognition though I'm sure it does not have a chance. I was kind of hoping to see the Road somewhere on here, but it appears to have been shutout.

I'll be pretty disappointed if Avatar wins best picture here, I can say that much and I think Up is way overrated, but really most of the nominations unfolded pretty much as I expected.

Maybe I'll try to put a poll up later. :hmm:

The 10 nominees for best picture is totally lame. Just there to allow more studios to market their movie as "Nominated for Best Picture".

And Anthony Mackie far more deserved a nod for supporting actor for Hurt Locker than Jeremy Renner did for his leading role. I didn't know who Anthony Mackie was before watching that, but was REALLY impressed with him in that movie.

I just realized that I've never even seen previews for/heard of 40% of the Best Picture nominees. I really should try to watch more movies...

No doubt about that. While I like most of the movies nominated, I can't really say there are that many truly memorable movies there, ones we will be talking about several years from now. Inglourious Basterds for me (probably A Serious Man as well, something about that film really worked for me) maybe one or two others if I stretch it, but that's about it.

Best Picture
Inglourious Basterds

Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (i wouldn't be upset in the least if Q.T. won instead)

Best Actor in a Leading Role
George Clooney in Up in the Air (i havent seen 'crazy heart' yet; but until i do clooney is my pick)

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds (they may as well engrave his oscar now)

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Carey Mulligan in An Education (everyone has bullock as a lock; and as good as she was there were moments where i felt that i was still watching sandra bullock, the actress)

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Mo’Nique in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push by Sapphire’ (it KILLS me that the woman from such cinematic masterpieces like 'soul plane' and 'phat girlz' is going to win an oscar; but i look at the list and she's most deserving. melanie laurent should've been in here and won)

Animated Feature Film
Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson

Pretty much guaranteed as far as I'm concerned. Same with Mo'Niqiue for Precious, but I agree with anxi80 about Laurent. She was spectacular in that role, with some very understated, yet powerful acting.

I want to see the hurt locker get some love. It was a great movie, I was lucky and got to see it in theaters. Avatar was pretty and a fun movie, but it should just win for special effects and such.

And Christoph Waltz was crazy good in IG.

He's really the only one I care about. This was one of the most impressive performances I've seen in the decades I've been watching movies. It was really a tour de force and there can't be many actors on earth who could have pulled it off (in fact Tarantino had shelved the Basterds project for years because he didn't think he could find an actor with sufficient talent and the ability to speak four languages convincingly). I just watched the movie again last night and his performance stood out even more on a second viewing.

On balance I think Inglourious Basterds was the best film of the year (with the caveat that I have not seen, nor do I intend to see, Precious). Unfortunately Avatar looks like the likely Best Picture winner in a somewhat strange pool of nominees.

Bump for Oscar day.

I wonder if the negative press will impact The Hurt Locker, though the whole lawsuit, etc. may have come too late to actually do anything to its chances. :hmm:
