Unopened D0 920 to a 930?

I have a good batch on a D0 920 (unopened) from MicroCenter (with receipt)

Would you return it and spend the extra 50$ for the 930 with a 22 multi?

How do you know it's a good batch?
It seems like the newer ones are not so good.
Of course I set the bar high - 4.4+.
All of 'em are doing 4GHz at stock voltage - the W3520s.
My first 1366 cpu was the i7 940 C0 and it sucked horribly. 3.8 was the best (HT ON) at 1.45V and it was a blast furnace.

930 sounds like the ticket to use in Asus WS boards with turbo throttle!

From an Anandtech review of actually the 760 A1. There was an overclocking review on it here and the 920 batch was mentioned with a 3850 A 796 The batch I have is 3850 A 849

Haha crack that open and pour on the juice! 21X208 is a good match - memory at 1666.

Saaweeet!

Thanks for the persuasion

:awe:

EDIT: i'm going to run 3.3Ghz like SunnyD until I get my h20 parts, someways down the road. It gets hot in this room like 80+ *f in the summer.

3.3 GHz? You must have only a stock cooler!

Otherwise that's like driving an E55 on the Autobahn at 100 km/hr.

lololol

I do have a Mega Shadow i purchased to aesthetically please myself - that sounds funny. I'm actually not even sure it will fit on the 760 A1 cause of that NB heatsink they decided to stick on there, haha

That's a sin.
If a heatsink could talk it would utter a tapestry of colorful metaphors that would block out the sunlight over 1/3 of the North American continent causing 2010 to be the year without a summer!

It should fit that board with no problem. Mine fits on 759 (the original Classified) as well as the 762...

so will a core I 930 work or not.

KxK

That question is so simple and I think there is something more that you are asking. Could you give more detail to what you are asking?

To be straight forward, why wouldn't an i7 930 not work in any 1366 board. I was asking if I should take my un-opened i7 920 back to MicroCenter and spend the extra 50$ on upgrading to a 930. How did you get "will it work" out of that?

They are the same except for the multiplier AFAIK.

Just because its stock speed is higher does not mean its ceiling is going to be higher when overclocking! Not even close!

I have several W3520s - the equivalent of your 920 in Xeon form. Two of these overclock far better (4.5GHz) than both 975s did and on lower voltage!

Of course when overclocking it's no different than playing the lottery. You must play to win AND you don't always win. This does not mean your overclock won't work at all obviously.

One must remember the addiction as well. If you feel that you will be happy with 4GHz and you reach that with no effort you won't stop there - trust me! You will go higher - 4.2GHz. Hmmm no sweat! Higher and higher until it crashes. Then the real fun starts when you realize 4GHz is nothing and you've gotten a taste of blood flowing at 4.4GHz so that is your new quest! And the voltage tweaking begins along with enough other BIOS settings and their complex interactions with each other to build a truth table that stretches across two meeting room boards with complexity that makes bringing the astronauts back to Earth from the Apollo 13 mission seem like child's play!

Be careful, its addictive like crack cocaine. At least it won't wreck your body. (although sleep deprivation may cause your peers to think you're doing hardcore drugs!)

As funny as that sounds it is the truth....At least for the diehard overclockers anyways.

I find it funny when others ask for help with a mild overclock of only a couple hundred ghz(typo meant mhz) and are struggling to get there

Oh oh, this crazy train is getting de-ralied! Haha

Got my platform installed: See Pee You, Heat and the Sink, Moe Bo, Pee es You. My next step is looking ahead at my AVCHD machine and getting it ready so when I make the jump to this rig, the AVCHD machine is a smooth transition. Just trying to figure out my drive configuration

Mild oc? Please spill your secrets, NOW!

Wasn't geared towards you....After all you are the overclocking mistress of the deep

OK I get it now....Meant mhz we are a couple of light years away from ghz at this time still.

PSU = power supply unit. We're old fashioned and call 'em power packs. Probably goes back to old school robotics.
