The new map Lea Observatory is great...

Here is a little video of me playing it with my 2 years old gaming laptop...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3nQ2sKl0zs

Thanks for posting,i added it and damn that map looks amazing!

Not sure why but i thought with those type of textures,a Tron Legacy type of game would look amazing. Not sure why but i can't get that type of concept out of my head.If you saw the movie you may know where i am getting at.

32 bots is a bit crushing on the frames, constantly dropping into the 40s...still fun

So will UT4 be free upon release, or will be be under continuous community development? To the point, what's the business model behind this?

Just curious, are you new to arena FPS stuff?

I think it rocks too, and I'm not new to em.

nope. I was a die hard arena shooter fan. grew up playing quake 2, q3a, ut 99, ut2k4. I hate and could never get into realistic FPS games and basically stopped playing the fps genre because they just weren't fun to me. it really sucked that there weren't any good arena shooters out there for the last 10 or so years. UT3 was pretty much DOA and nothing came out afterwards. to hell with COD and all the other FPS franchises out there!

the gameplay and feel seems to be faster than ut99 but slower than ut2004. a good mixture of both.

The game is free but community developers can create level packs and skins etc that they may charge for. Then I believe Epic gets a percentage of sales.

Both. It's free now and will be free upon release, and it will have continuous development by community mappers and modders. I'm under the impression that they will always be updating the game in various ways, as needed.

To the point, what's the business model behind this?

That's hard to say. It may be, "Draw attention to Unreal Engine 4," or "Serve as an example of what you can do with Unreal Engine 4." Epic has a small team of developers working on the project, so if it loses money or if the business model does not work out, it might not be that big of a deal.

I think they're hoping to make money from the "Marketplace" where mappers and modders can sell maps and mods. It seems unlikely that maps will be sold except for single player campaigns, such as a remake of the original Unreal. The money may be in non-obligatory cosmetic items such as funny hats and weapon skins. It's also possible that a team of modders might create a new game type and charge for it.

I love it.

My body is ready.

Please bring back twitch shooters so the stupid CoD / Battlefield fanboys can play games with a level playing field and not hit the reward system of their brain every 2 seconds to stay interested.

id, where you at?

I don't like that its free. Anything that's free can't have that much invested into it. That's my reaction anyway. I'd rather it be $50-$60 with open support for modding and all that stuff. I want to feel like they tried hard to make a good, complete game. Nobody tries hard to make a good, complete game and then hand it out for free.

The community is making the game. People who want to see Ut come back are the ones who are doing the bulk of the work. Epic is giving the engine and a very basic starting point. That's why the game will be free. Mods and such can be sold by the community.

I wouldn't mind a proper revival of Quake 4!

From pre to post-patch, I loved the hell out of that game. Movement and weapons feel that just shits all over Quake 3, IMO.

TBH i dont remember much fanfare for quake 4. did it ever have a huge fanbase like q3 and ut99 did?

Nope, was nowhere close to what Q3/ UT99 was unfortunately.

Not only were hardware requirements too steep for most people, the game launched with many bugs which drove people away even further.

There really wasn't a second chance once the game finally got patched to a decent level, and PCs were upgraded enough for run it at 125 FPS.
