o yes. I'm really considering this.

Shake fist at anandtech! You're a moneysink!

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I don't think that's true. It is just a "natural progression", but again I loved (and still do) UT2K3. What's wrong with it that 2K4 makes up for? I love Assault and I really like the new Onslaught mode but I wouldn't call these a "vast improvement". Download the demo and try for yourself. By the way, if you have gnutella client (file sharing software) try and get the demo that way if you still can't get in the FTP servers, it should be much faster (if you have the bandwidth). By the way, my copy got downloaded 1800 times over the past 4 days!

Does anyone know what UT2K4 improves as far as voice "stuff"? the fact that they're shipping a headset with the game would imply voice is a bigger part of gameplay, but I don't know the details and don't have a headset setup. I thought that you were supposed to be able to use voice commands to control the bots in single player mode (I hate the "tree" based interfaced, I'm not good enough of a player to try and direct bots and trying not to get fragged at the same time). Also, does online play support voice "chat"? It'd be way cool to be able to talk to your teammates in team games!

u can chat online with your team mates now, using Ventrillo (http://www.ventrilo.com/). its way better than roger wilco, and you sound very clear in all games. we use it constantly, with Raven sheild, UT2003, FFXI online, etc

Actually I just read the description: and it says "Live chat over LAN and Internet with 3D audio (on supported cards), using a microphone and headset (included) ", so I guess it answers my question. I've heard of Roger Wilco but not of Ventrillo, the problem is that I want to be able to talk to total strangers hwo morethan likely would not have have the required client. Since it's built into the game however, this should be interesting, will make for much better stratgey and coordination of teams (no more "the ball carrier is here", but where the heck exactly is "here"?)

I can't find any info about controlling bots through voice commands though.
I have a copy of Game Commander that I haven't used in a while but there was a problem that prevented me from "talking" to bots with it (under UT2K3), I don't remember what it was, maybe the fact that you can't preselect which bot you want to "talk" to. Yes, I do enjoy playing the standalone version and I hate it when some dumb bot has "got my back" and gets in my way.

Edit: Oh and I just bought the special edition at EBGame too, that's probably the first time ever that I pay full price for a game (well, if you can call this "full price", but I paid less that $17 for UT2K3 when I got it shortly after it came out.). I got cheap though, went for slow and free shipping. I can wait a few days...

Niceeeee! im going to pre-order mine tomorow. when I was at the Unreal University, in november 2003, epic said that if you buy UT2004, it would come with a coupon for 20 dollars money back, when u send them the UPC label from UT2003. Not sure if this has been publicized, but i hope they do that, for the UT2003 buyers.

I think the rebate/voucher is only good for $10... unless you have a source to confirm it's $20?

thanks,

Bit the bullet and bought it at Gamestop with free 2nd day.

I hope they don't play jerky with my order like they did with FFXI and the supposed free overnight or whatever last time I ordered from them.

I love Onslaught, I think it has real potential for team tactics. I was playing online last night on a server that alternated between onslaught, Assault and team deathmatch and it appears that most players didn't like it very much from the chat comments, but it's quite new and different so that probably accoutns for it. Not as much high speed fragging (at least on that map) but I really like it. It's quite sastisfying (and hard) to do a comeback from having your bsae under attack to winning the game.

I got to try the voice chat stuff but it wasn't a very positive experience, it was hard to hear what some players were saying, and you got to be careful to press the F key for the entire duration of what you're saying, otherwise you get cutoff. Part of the problem was few people had a headset and it's hard to carry a conversation spoken on one side, and typed on the other.

i just bought the game from GameStop for $40 with free 2day shipping (easy to find coupon). good deal.

what clinched the purchase for me was watching CliffyB's promo video which shows off some of the technology, but more importantly, explains the differences between UT2003 and the new game. i wasn't that impressed with UT2003, but UT2004 seems better all already. not too much difference in the eye-candy department, but seems like a lot of effort went into gameplay, maps, etc. which is really what a game is all about (as opposed to a tech demo). i haven't even played the demo yet, but the interview looked promising enough to make me part with my $40. and Assault is back! woo-hoo!

I believe a saw a news link on either hardocp or bluesnews about how to control the bots using Microsoft's speech recognitition development kit.

Claw, That sounds like a nice deal. However I just bit the SE bullet now that Gamestop has free 2-day shipping on all PC Games. The code is 2DPRPC2. It will expire in 19 hours, so this is a time limited deal (The free 2day shipping).

Note to mods: The coupon code is easily accessible on gamestop's website, so its not a special code or anything

Man! I missed the coupon!
I ended up doing pre-order at B&M even though I'll need to pay tax (My GameStop B&M is the same price as online).

As far as controllin bots, I found the following instructions, haven't tried though:

You need to install Microsoft Speech (68 MB )

http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51/

After installing, go to "speech" in the Windows Control Panel and configure it to recognize your voice.

In UT2004, activate Voice Chat in the audio section.

Also, configure a button for mic activation (or was it called voice chat activation, can't remember).

Fire up an instant action game. Press F1 to see which bot has wich "name" (bravo, charlie, etc). Press the mic activation button and say things like "Charlie, cover me", "Bravo, Attack" (more in manual). They do it!!! It's soooo cool!

Please tell me what store this is so I can get a local EB to call them. Every store in Jacksonville has never heard of this deal.

Got this off of FW.

FYI, if you order from EBGames, you can get an extra $10 off up front. Place an order, then at the confirmation page there is a button to "Click here for your reward". This will bring you to Reservation Rewards site where they will give you $10 coupon code for future purchase at EBGames. Sign up for RR (free for 30 days, make sure you cancel after using the code). They will email you a confirmation, with the EBGames code. Go back to EBgames and cancel your order. Reorder and use the $10 off code. You will get it for $29.99 - $20 EBGames Voucher - $10 Upgrade rebate (if you have UTK3). Before you cancel your RR acct, check out the coupons they have in your area and print them out.
