I am going to go buy it. I am excited about it, although I have to admit that I have commited myself to buy the following games no matter what:

Crisis
Orange Box
COD4
UT3
World in Confict

AHH so many good games, and I have them all!

So far I have at least played the demo of all these games, and I think COD4 wins for me.

I'm playing it right now, and it's a bit shameful. This was clearly built or converted to be Gears of War XMP for the consoles at some point, and then called UT3 because Epic doesn't own the GoW name and would be able to sell it to PC gamers with the UT3 title. I won't go on for too long, but they didn't fix any of the flaws from the "beta" demo; it still looks like vaseline, the server browser and all other aspects of the UI suck, the DX10 stuff didn't make it in to the game, and there are about a dozen other features that seemingly disappeared between UT2k4 and UT3. The server operators hate it as there's no Web Admin yet, everything has to be done by hand via the console.

This is clearly a console game that was ported to the PC with as little effort made as humanly possible.

It's a shame that the Console gaming's influence reaches the PC market and degrades it whenever possible. I liked Console gaming when I was younger, but now I can see why I went for PC gaming. However if the fast-food games we see on Consoles always have to make their way to the PC market I might eventually have to completely quit gaming altogether in the near future.

I can't think of a single game genre that remained completely away from the Console's influences.

FPS'es have had it (made for Consoles then ported to PC and then labeled as a "PC game")
RTS'es have had it too (same as above, C&C 3 anyone ?)
Adventure/Action have had it as well (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Lost Planet, etc)

And certainly much more.

I've always thought that Console gaming was good for 2-D platformers, 2-D/3-D fighting games (fighting games simply due to the controllers of course, but give me a good USB controller and I would play MK: Armageddon all day on PC), perhaps racing games and maybe a few types of adventure games (Zelda, Donkey Kong, Sonic, etc). But really, FPS'es and RTS'es on the PC, which are labeled "PC games first and THEN, maybe, Console games" should NOT adopt the Consoles way of things, such as over-simplified User Interface, control customization, graphics, sounds and engine options, and such.

Isn't it ironic guys ?

Consoles become PC's on an hardware side of things, while PC gaming, the software side, become Consoles ... it's the world upside down. The more it goes on, and the more I wish I was back in the golden era of gaming (I.E the days when Nintendo and Sega battled the beejezus out of each others by putting so many good games on the market that it seemed both of 'em had a software diarrhea.

Well then ... no need to buy it.

I still have hope however that someday someone, or a team of modders, will create the mode, or else I can keep playing 2K4.

Someone will probably mod Invasion sooner rather than later. However, you might also enjoy the other game types since the game play is more UT99 style, which means less emphasis on hitscan. So, no-vehicles regular weapons CTF might be fun for you in UT3 (it was a blast in UT99 but kinda failed in UT 2004).

Gah i was hoping they was going to change the interface and sort the bloody server browser out at least! It will be patched i am sure.

Anyway i think your being a little harsh. Its a bit too fast to be playing on a console controller don't you think? And it comes out on PC months before the console versions. Also UT never had a comprehensive control set up for it to be "dumbed down".

Does the full version include much better quality textures?

I don't understand why people use in-game server browsers. They all suck imo. Use xfire or all-seeing eye.

I never had a problem with the UT2k4 browser. I haven't used a 3rd party browser since Q3.

The ingame browser is being re-done. should be out in a patch before long.
The main reason I am interested in the game is not the game itself, but the game engine.
So many things can be done with it.

I watched some of the video on the bonus dvd and the one for making of UT3, it shows them all play testing on a PS3 with a controller, not a keyboard mouse on pc. so that explains the consolish nature.

well ive played it for about an hour or two. i like it...much more than 2k4, although, i hated 2k4 and always loved '99. i'm not a big fan of anything but deathmatch and ctf...but the hoverboard in war mode or whatever is handy. ill be throwing up a dedicated server when i get home (which might not be until sunday)...ill throw the info on here if i remember...

Well with an in built server browser its more convenient - you find a game, join it and play. If you don't like the server your in, you find another server using the in game browser.

With 3rd party software you would have to quit the game, find another server, load the game back up or alt + tab, copy the server ip and paste in the console.

Only if you like it heavily modded. I haven't been able to find a pure Invasion (or better yet, Instagib Invasion) server for a long time now, they all run the UT2K4RPG mod.

I broke down and bought the Collector's Edition at a my local Best Buy. At first I didn't see the game and was afraid that they didn't have it in stock, but then I found it and was able to use a 10% off coupon.

The game play is awesome! I haven't had so much fun playing CTF on a public server for almost two years. Let's hope that Epic hurries up and produces a patch to fix the server browser and the user interface. Such an awesome game should have better packaging.

The game does crash a lot for me, though.

Game crashes randomly for me, sometimes in a menu sometimes in game, it just freezes up basically. I'm bummed by the number of CTF maps (6) as that is the gametype I play all the time.

Though I enjoy the game I found myself playing TF2 tonight instead of UT3...

There are only six official CTF maps? That doesn't sound good. The previous UT games had at least like 20 each. They may release more in a bonus pack and there will be no shortage of user-made ones, but I was hoping to see the same amount of content that UT2004 came with.

How many maps in total?

6 is pretty lame considering the number of CTF maps the previous games have (although most UT2k4 CTF servers run instagib, face only).

Then again TF2 only has 6 maps in the whole game.

Yeah only 6 CTF maps and they have 6 vehicle CTF maps as well. All the other modes have a lot more, like at least double at the very least.

I was a bit pissed overall, especially considering two of the CTF maps are remakes of original maps (Hydro and Coret)

The editor has changed sufficiently as well. I can't even figure out how to lay down a texture, lol. I'm a 2k4 VCTF junkie and I'm afraid that the new iterations of the vehicles are very hard to steer.

Well, at least it's good to see a new Coret. That was easily my favorite map in the original. I hope they release a bonus pack or something to make up for this though.

After having played MP for a while, I don't really like it. It's both too fast and too slow for me. I guess some people like an uber twitch game, but I have gotten used to a slower twitch requirement in games like COD4.

Edit: I like it a bit more now that I turned off bloom.

I'm glad I bought the Collector's Edition with the 20 hours worth of Engine tutorials. I released a couple UT99 maps and I'd be pretty lost without them. You don't apply textures directly now. Instead, now you apply pre-made texture combos (those spheres with textures that you see when you open a package). I think they are called "materials".

Folks--don't worry about only having 6 CTF maps. 5 of them are pretty good and the sixth (Vertebrae) seems fine for online play. Of the other five, some might be clan match worthy.

BTW...a Beta Patch has been released and I've installed it, so expect an official release soon. The first patch will improve the server browser a bit (Join as Spectator, Server History/Favorites).
