Nah...the executives just realized "Hey..it's been a while since we made a UT game, huh? All forces ahead - There's money to be had!"

Kind of a weird take, considering the typical complaints come from the fact that major publishers don't give their games ENOUGH time, instead cranking out mediocre iterations every year (Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Madden). Now, we're getting a complaint that this is a money grab when they've waited 7 or 8 years to release it?

UT isn't popular enough to make money year after year, but they could still just throw some mess together and cash in on the name recognition it has left.

It has recognition left to it's name? UT3 was bad and that is the only think the majority of gamers are going to remember. How many people who buy games these days have fond memories of UT2k4? UT2k3? UT99?

UT3 was well received by critics and most gamers, it's just a vocal minority of mostly 2k4 fans that hate it. So it fits right in line with a number of high profile reboots, Thief being perhaps the most recent that fits nearly the exact pattern seen here.

The first two games are loved by gamers and critics. The third game is critically successful and finds a new audience by going multiplatform, however it is disliked by many series fans. The series is later rebooted attempting to bring both potential audiences together.

Obviously in Thief's case, it didn't work. I don't expect UT4 to do any better, but we shall see.

10 years now since the classic UT2K4. 15 years since UT.

I'm old

Oh man, I remember the first version of the Unreal Tournament demo only supported 3Dfx cards and software rendering as some kind of promotion. Neither of those things exist anymore!

Well, I'll join in with some of the UT3 hate.
First of all, they kind of removed the "sports" aspect, that kept previous UTs fun.
I don't care about running around shooting at walker bots, I want a good clean DM/TDM/CTF/BR/etc, against equally equipped opponents, with a cool announcer and funky intros.

Secondly, they messed up graphics. UT isn't about gray and grisly warzones. Sure, the arenas can vary toward the run-down industrial look, or even a battlefield-reminiscence - but there always was a number of maps, where it was transparent to the player, that these were maps designed for a tournament. Very few of these were in evidence in UT3 - the maps felt more CoD like, which just isn't what I want for a UT game.
Then the player models! Oh my god. Previous UTs were always super colorful, with a variety of character, easy to ID enemies, and generally a cartoony representation, that really made the game fun. UT3 completely did away with that, and promptly ruined the fun.

Of course, I only briefly played the PS3 version, and had a look at a free week-end a few years back. But it was enough to be convinced that I need not buy it.

The only thing keeping it from being profitable has been the fact that it hasn't been any good at all in 10 years.

I can't say I agree with that. Not that I think it would matter anyway, the better the UT fans think of the game, the worse it will be received by the majority of gamers. If Epic wants the game to sell, they will have to completely butcher everything that makes it fun to it's core audience, or just give it a tiny budget and stick to it's roots.

That's just what people are being trained to believe. Dayz is an example of a game that goes against what people want according to devs and its been wildly successful for a beta. If it came out on consoles it would be a blockbuster.

Perhaps, I still don't see 'UT4' finding much of a new audience without catering to them (abandoning it's roots), but I'm open to be surprised.

Well..as far as i know, EPIC is not known for having that aproach. Gears of War games have tons of DLC for maps and stuff?

what is "twitch shooter" supposed to mean?

A twitch shooter is one that relies on quick reflexes to do well. Something like counter-strike is an example. It doesn't take long to kill someone (one shot head shots are fairly common), so as soon as you and an enemy see each other, it's down to who has the fastest reaction time and best accuracy.

In these games, keyboard/mouse combos are vastly superior to controllers as you can move the mouse as fast as you want.

thanks, i thought it had something to do with streaming...

I guess they could do a SP game in the unreal universe with a MP section... that would kinda make everyone happy (if they do it right of course)
Im sure most of the unreal tournament players have fond memories of the SP game Unreal, a game that together with Half Life were big hits in its time...

Let Unreal rest.
Single Player is also not what devs really do anymore these days, and I must admit, for many good reasons.
UT was never really dependent on the Unreal franchise, and there was a reason they were different games, sold separately.

UT was always about the athletic aspect of a deathmatch, where cover wasn't as important as dodging incoming fire where moving around was worth more than staying still. That's why I liked it, and never really liked CS.

A lighthearted, athletic/cartoony deathmatch shooter, with good level design, funky graphics, a proper career mode and something that allows for true displays of skills (and thus make it e-sportable, to take over from the aging Quake Live) is what the market currently lacks, and with a UT-branded title wuld embrace.

Just look at how popular dota2 is. It has many of the ingredients that UT would need, albeit with a different base gameplay mechanic.
As opposed to dota2, it would need to be moddable though. Otherwise, the legacy of UT would be spoiled.

Aside from career modes, you've pretty much described the free shooters that are out today (Warsow, Xonotic, etc.).

Top-notch in their own right (Xonotic being my fave by far), but little to no interest from gamers.

Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst, in any case!

We need an arena shooter comeback with a strong lead game to get it off the ground, the problem is that the face of gaming has changed and the pure adrenaline pumping raw combat of the originals was sacrificed for gimmicks and general lameness with UT3, so i guess the question is "how much are they going to consolize it?"

They're simply not going to make another PC shooter primarily it will undoubtedly be multi-platform which means it will almost certainly be a failure, at least for the old PC crowd.

UT3 was quite the letdown.

i'll hope it doesn't suck, even though i really don't play FPS much anymore. too old and slow.

I use to be lower 1/4 to 1/5 in a random server back in CS pre 1.6 days. But a few weeks ago I tried to play CS GO or something like that and I killed NO ONE. Not a single person in a few rounds haha. I was TERRIBLE. A couple of years ago I tried to do some COD online PS3 gaming and I don't think I killed a single person ever . So I've gone from below average to absolutely the worse guy on the server with age. I'm only 30 but my love of gaming has dropped to the point where I only have about 3 games on my PS3.

I looked at the games and I've bought 2 games for my PS3. Unchartered 3 and a COD 2. My mate gave me Mass Effect 3 and I haven't even played it once.

https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/the-future-of-unreal-tournament-begins-today

Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

HERE’S THE PLAN:
We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.
SO WHAT’S THE CATCH?
It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.
A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

"Unreal Tournament" and will be FULLY Free to Play. No micro transactions or anything like that. It will be developed together with the community and their input. As expected, it will be powered by the brand new Unreal Engine 4.

They are going to create a Marketplace like the Steam Workshop where modders, artists and gamers can giveaway, sell or buy custom content if they want to. Some part of that money goes to Epic.
