Unsure what to do about my current job situation

I've been working at company X for about 2.5 years now ever since I graduated college. The average age at the company is probably around 35-40 so I'm definitely one of a handful of younger employees working here. Thus far I've very much enjoyed the work I've been given and the projects that I've been on. My old manager did a good job of giving me assignments in different areas to help further my own personal development. I've felt that I've done a good job thus far on everything that I've done and I know that I'm probably more capable than half the people on my team. I do make a conscious effort though to not be cocky or arrogant to people I work with.

I basically got a new manager in the last few months. He's very cool and everyone likes him, but I can't help but feel there is some sort of resentment he has towards me. As we are wrapping up our current project new assignments are being handed out to different members of the team for the next year. Thus far I've yet to hear what I will be working on, but I have the distinct feeling I'm going to be given some bullshit assignments to complete instead of real work that will further my own development.

I have no problems leaving this company if that happens. I am not married or tied down to the company/location in any way right now. I am also confident I can find a new job basically anywhere, even in this kind of environment. I am torn as to how to approach this situation, I know I need to let my manager know how I feel but am unsure how to bring it up. Also I don't know if I even have a right to argue as I am the youngest person on the team by at least two decades and if I just need to wait my turn

Surprisingly, I've gotten some decent advice from ATOT before which is why I'm posting here. Thanks.

Why don't you wait until he actually assigns you something before being so dramatic?

Everyone always thinks they are "more capable than half the people" they work with.

If you are truly unhappy you would have left already.

Next?

Taking only one piece of your story into consideration: if you do not like what you are doing or you do not feel challenged enough and staying somewhere will be a detriment to your career advancement.. just leave.

Before you do, talk to your superior and bring these concerns to him. You could be paranoid or worried about nothing. If he is resistant or does not commit to making changes, interview elsewhere and get a new job lined up. Once you do that, ask him again and if he does not comply then simply give him your two weeks right there on the spot.

This is not a slam on you and I know you think you're confident that you could find something else. Make sure you can before you start rocking the boat.

First, you're putting the cart before the horse. You haven't received your assignment yet.
Second, you've enjoyed the work but, you would quit for one bad assignment?
Third, you think you don't have to work at companies that give you crap assignments? Bwahahahahahaha!
Fourth, you think you're special and won't have any difficulty in finding another job? Grow up.

Haha, good advice guys. Like I said, the ATOT crew always sets my head on straight.

I will bring up my concerns to my manager during my yearly performance review in a few weeks. I'll proceed from there depending on how things go.

You might want to wait until you actually have something to be concerned about before bringing your concerns up. Don't bring anything up with management if it's only based on a "feeling" or a "hunch".

If I wanted to shoot myself in the foot this is exactly what I would do too.

Easiest way to deal with a young primadona is to not give them anything and they'll leave. If it concerns you that much just say you'd like x project.

I didn't even consider this. All the mention of "feelings" should have given it away too!

In that case, OP needs to reschedule the review for when it's not "that time".

Okay, for the OP:

Can you tell us what you mean when you say, "I can't help but feel there is some sort of resentment he has towards me."

This seems to be where you're loosing people.

BTW, I've been out of school for about 5.5 years and working at my current job for about 4.5 years. My salary was high to begin with (coming from a better paying job), I'm a top-performer despite being the most recent hire in my group, and my work is interesting. My raises have been mediocre despite being a top performer (I'm told it's because my salary is high to begin with), so I asked my boss for a promotion in the early summer.

He gave me a very managerial answer, and I left that meeting letting him know that the non-answer that I had gotten didn't leave me satisfied. I then went out and got other companies interested in me. The management at my current workplace got wind of it, and they're now in a panic that I might leave. They've thrown a mid-year raise at me that's higher than any I've ever gotten (by almost 100%), and I've been promised a promotion and another decent raise in March (normal raise/promotion cycle).

In the meantime, I'm still taking interviews. I might leave; I might not. Depends on what type of work offer and salary offer I get elsewhere.

Be prepared to put out some action.

So I should just shut my mouth and continue to take crappy assignments that don't further my development? Sounds like a great way to have a mediocre career.

Bottom line is to get anything from corporate management you have to show them you are willing to walk away.

You haven't had any crappy assignments yet, and you don't have any good reason to think you will. Chill out dude.

Thirded, 2.5 years of experience versus people with 10-20 - you're not too high on the experience chart, thus you'll get shitty assignments. It's part of life. Maybe that resentment you're feeling from your boss is actually his way of saying that he's sick of you acting like you're god's gift to mankind.

Sorry, no offense, but you sound like a prima donna. Time to put your big kid pants on. You might get crappy assignments from time-to-time -- deal with it and do a good job on them. Trust me, if you start whining and complaining about your "development" constantly, you're going to get nothing BUT crappy assignments and get blacklisted to boot.

Oh, and I've known several people who "knew they could find a job, even in this environment." Guess what? They haven't.

First, you don't even know that you're going to get a "crappy" assignment. Wait until you receive it to make that call. Second, you have not worked there very long versus people who have been there quite a while. EVERYONE has to pay there dues and even though YOU think you're better than half the other employees, your manager or supervisor might not share your opinion. Lastly, like many others have said, if you're not happy start looking for another job and be prepared to leave if a better opportunity comes along.

They didn't just make up the word primadona. It came from countless young'uns that think they know everything. Deal with them accordingly.

Put them in their place basically. Keep putting them in their place. If they are such hot shit then they will leave.
