I actually don't think the tethered JB is that big of a deal. . . been running it for like two weeks now. Cydia apps generally only require a springboard restart. unless you run out of power or phone crashes, a full restart isn't even necessary. Now if your phone freezes and you're not by your computer, your SOOL but for the most part, its not even something that you'll really notice.

I think it's you, Dude. I'm downloading that file right now, and the speed is bouncing between 2.2MB/s and 2.5MB/s.

it was me dude, yesterday i noticed and reported it and today ISP got it fixed, and this is the first thing i thought about, downloading now at great speed, thanks.

Like you said, if your phone freezes and you're not by a computer you're SOL which is very much something many of us will notice. Just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean it's not a big deal. If I was ever caught without my phone I would instantly lose all forms of communication and some very important apps like my GPS... which is currently being used nearly every single time I get into the car until I get used to my new town. My car speedometer also likes to act up from time to time so I rely on my GPS speedometer.

It's fine that you don't need your phone as much, but for those of us that do having a tethered JB is a huge issue. It's why I haven't updated yet.

What GPS app do you use that has a speed reading? My speedo is on the fritz as well. It seems normal but I dont know if I can trust it!

no way is a GPS a replacement for a speedo. Speed on GPS is not displayed in real time. It's calculated using two measurements (time and location) points taken by the GPS. What you end up with is the speed between those two points. not the speed the instant you are looking at the GPS. meaning you could have been traveling at a much higher speed at one given point than the GPS is showing.

I use Navigon. Bought it during their holiday sale when it was $35. Not sure if it's still that price.

Which only matters during the time when I'm accelerating/decelerating relatively quickly. All I need it for is to ensure I keep my cruise control at a normal highway speed. Once it stabilizes (in a matter of a second or two) it's quite accurate.

It's not a replacement for a speedometer, but when yours is stuck between 40 and 50 it's much more accurate then what you have.

Thanks but I'm pretty confident I know how GPS works. You're completely right that it's not an exact replacement for a speedometer but when you don't have one and they car you drive really isn't worth putting a new one in, you just have to go with what you've got.

It's out - Greepois0n:

http://greenpois0n.com/

Here is what you need to do:

1. Make sure you get a good copy that opens correctly and isn't corrupt (unzip & run, if it opens you're good).

2. Run it in admin mode via Terminal for optimum installation: open Terminal, type in "sudo" and hit space, then right-click on Greenpois0n, click "Show package contents", go into the MacOS folder, and drag the greenpoison app into the Terminal window, then hit enter. This will kick off the app in admin mode. Follow the instructions from there (note: after the app says complete, let the phone sit for a minute or two and finish loading everything. When it's all set, the Apple logo will flip into an Apple skull and boot up and you'll see the Loader icon. If you have issues, keep the home button pressed until it starts loading and scrolling text after the initial lines of text appear).

3. After it's all finished, disable auto-lock in settings (typically set to 1 min). Run Loader and install Cydia. Go back into Loader, click Options, and delete Loader. Reset auto-lock to whatever you like.

Redsn0w has been out for a bit though... does this offer anything different... like Windows compatibility?

Redsn0w's latest version 0.9.7b6 is also untethered but is also Mac only :\.

But I've also heard that none of these work well with the ATV2? :\

This is a very problematic jailbreak. A lot of people are having trouble with the Greenposi0n client not properly uploading the payload, and there's little rhyme or reason why. Even if you can get jailbroken, it doesn't install Cydia, so you have to use their Loader application to try to download Cydia from some poor, overloaded server.

Yeah, I still haven't gotten Cydia loaded up. Totally overloaded.

Can you not install Cydia? I just want to preserve my baseband and update to 4.2.1 without having to install Cydia on my iPhone.

not sure its worth upgrading to 4.2.1 - why not wait for 4.3?
Someone said the same thing about 4.1 to 4.2.1. Do you have any idea how long the wait was for a 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak?

Man. I am so freaking happy now. It took nearly 40 minutes to download Cydia but I am now customizing the hell out of my phone.

When I upgraded to 4.1 my battery life took a huge hit and my push alerts stopped working. I've been wanting to fix it for a long time now.

if anything and heed warnings.. being the first 4.2.1 on the block jailbroken may not be the best way to go about things. waiting a week or so - so you are out of RC5 etc mode - will go along way.

no reason push would stop working on a iphone4 with the prior jailbreaks they were solid.
