Unusually slow data transfer rates from cd drives (also causes system slowdown)...

I recently reformatted and installed a new video card (Radeon 8500le) -- after which I had some IRQ problems (lag caused by interferences with my promise controller card) which I solved by reverting back to the windows 2000 service pack 2. But then, a few days ago, I started experiencing crashes (BSOD with the error: "Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal"). I looked around online and found people had solved such a problem by setting their computer to "Standard PC" instead of ACPI (through the device manager). So I did this and the crashes stopped. But now, data transfer from any of my cd drives (54x, 48x/16x dvd, and 36x burner) are very slow and I also experience system lag when copying data off CD to my hard drive (mouse lag is especially noticeable), plus I can no longer play video from CD -- the audio and video become asynch. I don't know for sure if this started occuring before or after I switched it to standard pc -- but it was definitely after I formatted and started having irq conflicts. It's like my drives are never kicking into high speed (from listening to them) or something. I currently run my two main hard drives off my controller, both on separate cables, and then my cd drives and third hard drive are all off my motherboard. Any advice will be greatly apprecitated.

I don't know what the prob is but i will say this all 4 of the athlon computers i built had this same prob with the lagging and super slow network and cdrom.... all the PIII computers i built does not have this prob.... later i thought and said omg they all have via chipsets ( not the pIIIs intel chips set only ) is that the prob I don't know but we all know that via has probs with there south b chipset... so it may be the prob...

also another prob i have notice on all of the athlon/via base computers sometimes the mouse gets this odd thing where everytime you click its like clicking 2 times and it freaks things up a lot... again all via base computers and never seen the prob happen on intel!

it's odd stuff indeed and i have no ideal how to fix it but to get rid of via <---- will someone please burn that company to the ground ?

Yeah, I plan on staying away from via with the next rig i buid -- but, the things is, I never had a problem with slow data transfer rates before... As in, before my recent reformat...

Nope, I've tried about four different 4in1s (newest, 2nd newest, 3rd newest, one that came with my mobo...). And I still have the same slowdown. I really think it starting occuring after I changed it to "Standard PC" -- but I did that to fix the fatal crashes .

it sounds like your IDE channels are stuck in PIO mode which happens sometimes with XP and 2000. Go into device manager and check the properties of your primary and secondary IDE controller. Click on advanced settings and make sure that it says DMA if available. If this is selected then look in the box and make sure that the CDROM/hard drive/whatever says DMA mode 2 or seomthign similar and NOT PIO mode anything.

Yes, DMA mode makes a big difference. In PIO mode, my CD-ROM isn't able to transfer as fast as it's capable of, and CPU usage is 4x greater.

As far as the Promise Ultra100 Controller and Win2k is concerned, it's working fine with these:
Win2kSP3, bios v2.01b27, driver v1.60b36
(One ATA/100 hard drive connected to primary IDE of Ultra100, 1 cd-rw on primary channel of on-board IDE (Intel BX), 1 dvd-rom on secondary channel of on-board IDE.)

What driver version are you using? I get lagging when I use the latest v2.x Ultra100 driver, and the same BSOD you described with an earlier v2.x Ultra100 driver.

Thanks Pink0! That was it. All but Primary IDE 0 were set to PIO only. Everything is great now (*waits for random BSOD after having said that*).

jrichrds: I can't remember the exact version number (and it doesn't show up in device properties) -- but I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest driver (the one that is available for download through windows update and is *supposed* to solve the problems with sp 3).

Thanks again,

I'm having almost exactly the same problem with my cd-drive. I followed what Pink0 said, still no good. My cd-drive is on different cable from the primary HD. it runs extremely slow even under Linux. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
