So, I've got a 1705 now (17", 7900GS, etc), but the warranty is up in June so I'm looking to freshen.

I hop onto Dell's website and I still see the same old 1705's for sale. &$*#&$&????

I don't want the same old laptop with a 7950 GTX and Vista for crying out loud.

Does Dell have anything new coming out this summer?

I want at least a 17" screen, and good gaming capability. A full size kbd (with num pad) would be a plus. And it has to be cheap...that's why I'm thinking Dell. I'm not tied to Dell tho. Post up any rumors that you've heard....

Yes. New stuff is coming out towards the end of June. From what I was reading over at Notebookreview.com, the E1705 and E1505 are both going to undergo a Santa Rosa refresh along with new GPUs from Nvidia (8600 series). (This is hearsay) E1720 and E1520 are going to feature the 8600M GT, but I could see them putting the more powerful card in the E1720 and giving the E1520 an 8600M GS instead (slower, less power hungry). Also, the XPS m1330 will be coming out, but that is geared towards the very mobile who want some GPU power to play a game or two. I'm not really familiar with other gaming notebooks (There is also the Asus G1/G2 (15.4"/17") with the 8600 series GPUs as well, but I don't believe they have numberpads in either version).

i thought the 8600 wasnt much faster then a 7950 in dx9. theyre not planning an 8800 series laptop?

The numbers I put up were just hearsay from Notebookreview.com's Dell forums. You'll definitely see an 8800 series card in the XPS line and I guess you could potentially see an 8800 series GPU in the Inspiron 17" line, but it depends because they don't want to cannibalize XPS 17" sales. Also, the Inspiron E1705 is currently using the 7900GS, which is slower than the 7950

If you want a numberpad, I think the HP DV9000's are the only ones available with it. I've never seen it on any other laptop. I do not know of any plans to update that line with anything better than the current 7600GPU.

I've been waiting for months for Dell to come up with something new. Those coupons they've had are great deals, I just can't imagine spending it on graphics technology that's been around for a year or more. I just want to be able to play Crysis in DX10 on my laptop, is that too much to ask?

Apparently it is.

If they'd just come out with that Asus XG station already I'd be happy, but no they have to hang onto it for another who knows how long.

I'd be happier if AMD's Fusion technology came sooner. The idea of dynamically switching from a dedicated GPU while on A/C power to a small, integrated chip found alongside the CPU (so it will also be using CPU power-saving features) when on battery power. It would be great for those that want to have a powerful notebook but need longer battery life for when they are on the go.

i guess im just worried about performance, because i just tried the new DIRT demo and its whack. theres no way any dx9 card could stretch that game out to max, and i doubt an 8600 would play it unless you leave it at low resolutions, like those on laptops. honestly i believe the 8800 isnt fast enough for the games about to come out, we need more nvidia! and we need SOMETHING amd! lol

That's not Fusion, that's Puma, something like AMD's Centrino, and Griffin is the CPU codename. It's still going to be a while though, 2008

Edit: btw, this made me laugh "I just want to be able to play Crysis in DX10 on my laptop, is that too much to ask?"

Eh... I was close. I always get the code names confused. Either way, it's still a cool idea.

Definately, I might get AMD even if their CPU is slower just because of that.

Yeah the new XPS M1330 is so sexy. Wonder if dell is going to keep in the same price range as the M1210s.

looks like the new inspiron 1720's MAY only come with gforce 8600's and not 8800's. I've read that the 8600 is slower than the 7900 in the currrennt 9400's. D@mn those idiots at Dell. Any other good gaming laptops to consider?

They're not idiots. They are trying to increase sales of their higher end machines, the XPS lineup. Plus, according to Nvidia's website, there is no higher card than the 8600M GT (Link). There could be a higher card at a later date which you could see move into an Inspiron 17" notebook. As far as other notebooks to look at, take a look at the Asus G2 (17", 8600M GT) the G1 (15.4", 8600M GT), or C90 barebones notebook.

As far as further rumors go or broader recommendations, check out NotebookReview.com, particularly the "What Notebook Should I Buy" sub-forum.

Looks like Dell has removed the 7900GS as an option in the Inspiron 1705's and all the Latitudes. That stinks, I was about to use that $350 coupon on a 1705.

This doesn't make sense. The fastest DX10 mobile card out is the 8600M GS and it's pitiful competition for the 7900GS. Now they're going to junk the 7950GTX in the XPS1710 and replace it with a 8600M?

I'm almost inclined to go ahead and get the 7950GTX XPS now for fear they're going to junk the fastest mobile GPU out there. It's gotta play Crysis faster than the 8600M.

From what I've read, Crysis actually plays better on midrange DX10 GPUs compared to high-end DX9 cards. As far as what the XPS system will use, that's still up in the air as nVidia or AMD will provide a high-end offering for this generation. And as far as the removal of the 7900GS, it could also be a supply issue. Dell keeps few warehouses for parts so they don't get stuck with old parts when technology shifts. If they can't get a part within a few days, then they tend to drop it just to keep people from complaining how long it is taking to make their order.

Yep, new Inspirons are up today. E1420, E1520/E1521, and E1720/E1721.

And the new E17's have the full keyboard WITH number pad
