We have a few threads here and there about a couple of upcoming MMOs and we of course have a few stickied about existing ones like TOR and WoW. I was thinking maybe we needed a generalized thread to keep track of upcoming MMOs and to discuss minor upcoming ones that don't have a thread of their own.

MMORPGs:
The Secret World

TERA

Everquest Next

Guild Wars 2

MMOFPS and other non RPG MMO

Planetside 2

Defiance

MechWarrior Online:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2202899&highlight=mechwarrior

Firstly, what are some other upcoming MMOs that might be good that people may not be aware of?
I know there's going to a Warhammer 40k Dark Millenium Online in 2013 for example(Edit, no longer an MMO apparently). What else has anyone heard about?

That Secret World game looks silly to me. Like whats it supposed to be? Its in modern times but people are shooting fireballs like its a medieval fantasy game.

I'm definitely hankering for some EQNext information from SOE, now that EQ2 is in its draw down and retirement phase with the F2P transition. I don't see SOE not having an EQ as their MMO flagship.

The way you say that strikes terror in the sense that if EQ2 is drawing down and EQ2 is what's being replaced, that EQ next will be yet another WoW clone....oh noz...I want EQ1 gameplay again, just like before. Only I suppose this time they will have to start the game off from scratch with AA abilities, guild bank and guild hall, etc. But I definitelty like the overall formula. And the way you can actually fail things and not be able to do them until properly geared and AAed. Unlike TOR for example.

I have lost faith in the possibility that any MMO ever will actually be entertaining or fun to play.

So maybe it’s me, but I just never have understood MMOs. I get the social interaction thing, and teaming up against Big Baddies. But you can do that outside of MMOs and have much more fun doing it.

But here is the thing I don’t get. You never ever change anything. Nothing you can do actually matters. No monster (or player) you kill stays dead for more than a few moments. No item you can find is unique and isn’t already owned by a bajillion other players. There are no quests that you can go on which haven’t already been completed.

And as far as interaction with others, if someone really wants to be a jerk, there is never going to be a thing you can do about it. They can pester you and pester you. Even if you kill them, they just come back.

I used to play PWs for Neverwinter Nights 2. On the server, I wanted to play a highwayman. Basically I wanted to jump out from behind a tree and say “Your money or your life” and get money. Only no one ever gave money. And no one ever chased me down and vanquished me. Why? Because there was no punch or punishment if they died. Money was actually more valuable than life because you couldn’t lose your life in any meaningful way, but money was hard to come by. And it’s permanent loss was just that, permanent.

Most MMOs that I have experienced (I played Evercrack for more than a year and Asheron’s Call for a little while, plus some Free to play stuff more recently) weren’t any different.

I am not saying that I want to be a jerk or griefer. Merely that everything is sanitized and made so nicey, nicey that it is a buzzkill for the immersion to me. I play a lot of single player games and there is usually a goal or a bad guy to kill. And there is almost always something that changes when you do that. Usually you can actually WIN something. Not with MMOs.

There is no Victory so sweet, no betrayal sharp, no reward that is so uplifting, no sacrifice that has any sort of bitter sweet sting. And then it just feels like Facebook with a graphics lift.

So, what am I missing?

Eve Online. Sounds like the kind of game you would really enjoy.

Yep. Eve. Granted it's the only MMO I've played for more than a few days. From what I've seen/heard, it's the only one that you can truly have an impact on. One bad day can really fck your sht up or completely set you for a month, but you need to have no life to really have that impact.

Sounds like kind of MMO i'd want to play:

The Secret World has no classes or levels. It gives you complete freedom to be whoever you want to be and play however you want to play.

I'm so done spending 4 months leveling up just to get the whole experience while paying $120.

I actually like the idea of spending 3-4 months getting to max level and then it being difficult to get max raid geared, just like EQ and where there are actual strategies to the advanced abilities to the point you can spend significant time just discussing how you're going to spend those points with more experienced people in your class(and what stats are good to hoard for your class), again like EQ. Or, difficult to get gear unless you are in a cohesive guild. The biggest thing though is that you need to start the game in a game likethat from day 1, that's why I focus on upcoming MMOs, so I can do just that.

If I'm going to play an MMO RPG that's NOT done this way then I especially want it to have good ganking PvP or at least some kind of PvP where you can actually control territory(as in, an entire city becomes your faction/guild's property) or something. If the PvP is going to be all consensual duel junk or warzones, for that I will just play a first person shooter, or wait for Planetside 2.

From the youtube clips I've seen, TERA Online definitely has the breast movement physics down pat. The rest of the game will probably be shit though...

A real MMO is a PvP mmo. Otherwise whats the point of paying for a single player game each month.

Planetside 2 is the way its going to be for me.

I just want a damn EQ1 clone with:
PVP & non PVP servers
Consequences for death, ie:corpse runs
Large open world (not a bunch of paths like AoC)
Maybe some mini games, like have a boat ride like EQ1 but allow me to gamble and have drunken bar fights while on board or even a fishing game
Free for all PVP servers offer unique items/events
3 factions that effect the world in some way
A bunch of gold sinks to make crafting viable
Make it possible to run out of supplies, arrows, spell reagents, food ect
Some kind of way that lesser experienced can play along side higher level friends
And don't inflate the economy! I don't want 500,000 gold in the bank at all times. Make in game money valuable!

I am curious why you say that would be right for me. In what way would it be different from other MMOs? I have honestly never considered it so I don't even really know anything about the game.

This! But on two points specifically:
1. I always thought, at least from a standpoint within EQ, that what prevented crafting from being viable, crafting of armor and weapons I mean, was that the raid gear was more powerful than any crafted gear and even the crafted gear that came close to raid gear still required raid components. And those components could not be sold. (I'm talking about things like Last Bloods). The all tradeable system of Firiona Vie is clearly superior for the game.
2. As for some way that lower levels can play alongside higher levels, I don't see any way that can be done without drastically affecting the game. With limited exception, remember the pre-nerf OMM missions? Those allowed people around level high 40 or 50+ to group with level 80s for a bit.
