haha.

You know....that might have been some other pontifex. There were a few, apparently that is some popular name?

I think I did work with zerocool and a few other ATers briefly, rather early on.

But there was a pontifex that I always thought was you--but now I remember an online conversation revealing that it probably wasn't.

:hmm:

but your join date does say 2000--could be borked like my post number, (which is way too high...I think).

and the game was released 2005. factions was out a year later, about the time I played. Still....wouldn't matter the campaign. I did play with a pontifex in pre-searing at some point.

dude hated everything, haha.

Yeah, lot's of other pontifex's out there. I'm quite surprised at how many times I've tried to join a forum somewhere or use it as a login for a game and found it already taken.

I also don't think i've ever used Pontifex as a character name in any mmo, especially fantasy mmos.

My join date is borked. Happened when we switched over to this new forum.

MMo in first person?

D:
Game in first person?
D:

but seriously, isn't that game all about T&A and nothing else? why play in first person?

LOL, I would never play a female character. But the rest of you folks probably will so there will be plenty to see.

How is TERA as an MMO, does anyone know? As in, aiming system aside, is it casualized? Is it like SW TOR which is really a single player game, are you given exact instructions for where to go for everything, do tradeskills have a 100% chance of success and skilling up, can you solo everything, etc?

Also, added TERA to the original post and organized it by MMORPG and other MMOs. And as it happens, only EQ Next, TERA, The Secret World and Guild Wars 2 are up there now. Surely there are some more well known MMORPGs coming up?

The Tera Beta this weekend is open. Just use the code TERABETA and you can download the client.

The game tries to be a real-time action type game. It's like WoW, except there is no "selecting" a target and attacking.

It's heavily based on groups and playing with others. You can solo a number of the content in the game. It's not like WoW either, you have to find ppl and create groups instead of queuing into a system and have a group automatically created for you

Is anyone playing the TERA Open Beta this weekend? The combat so far seems to be somewhat of a revelation for MMO's, the character controls are tight and the movements precise. You do not target enemies, instead you face their direction and start hacking away while firing off hotkey'ed special attacks as they're available. There's a dodge mechanic to avoid getting hit, the enemies pack a lot of punch so you'll need it but they have predictable attack animations allowing you to avoid taking damage as long as you're paying attention. It's involving and so far it seems to work exactly like it should.

The game looks and runs exceptionally well. I don't want to go overboard but the environments, the color pallette, the character animations, along with the character models themselves are all outstanding. To get it all to run so flawlessly - I'm getting 80fps most of the time - is more impressive. I'll also add that I haven't seen any latency issues, playing the game feels like I'm playing it off-line on my local pc. This is fairly important considering how hack n' slashy the combat is, any server latency would really foul up the experience but thus far it's run smooth as glass.

The questing mechanics are typical MMO trash. I hate this type of stuff and I cannot wait to get my hands on GW2 again because that game does questing right.

I'm curious what others think of TERA, I'm not actually an MMO player and while I've already pre-purchased GW2... it's actually the first MMO I plan to really invest myself in. Ever. My only other experience in MMO's is getting to about Level 11 in DC:Universe and playing a couple hours of DDO. I don't count GW1 since it was entirely instanced, but I did get to level 19 in that game and dumped about 60 hours in total amongst several characters.

Right now I'm tempted to pre-order TERA so that I can keep my beta character once the game launches. I wasn't all that impressed after the first couple hours but since then the game has definitely started pique my interest.

Tera has a sort of 'beginners' problem'. For the Open Beta they apparantly threw together a prologue, with your character starting at level 20, to show you more of what the game content was like. This was in response to feedback that the first 20 levels of the game, which are designed to teach their particular style of play, were considered very grindy, filled with fedex and Kill10x quests. Of course, beginning at 20, you have no idea how to use your powers, so that's its own problem. Then you go back to the original 20 levels of grindy content.

Very very much an anime inspired game. Nice looking, but your opinion of the art style will pretty much determine whether you go 'Oh Pretty!', or 'Ack! Cute Attack!'

How is TERA's noncombat stuff? Tradeskills, does it have a bazaar or is everything useful no trade, the chat system(is it easy to join varying general chat channels or weak like TOR), etc?

how does GW2 do questing differently than other MMOs?

It's dynamic, you wander into an area and simply join into the event taking place. You don't have to talk to an NPC or accept any quest to get involved, the events simply trigger (whether you're in the area or not) and you can join in or you can ignore it. GW2 offers multiple ways to complete an event, it isn't just "kill 10 rats"...etc. With that said, there are a couple of the typical MMO quests in GW2 but the main content is all of the dynamic variety.

TERA is really grabbing my interest, I'm now extremely tempted to pre-order so that I can continue my character. I'm level 11 and I just made it off the starter island and into the first city.

I actually died a couple of times as well which I really like. I'm playing on a 360 controller while laying down on my couch, it plays like an action game which is exactly what I want from an MMO. All of the quest text is skippable and instantly forgettable, so sitting on the couch detract from the experience. The combat is light years better and more enjoyable than Amalur, but in a huge persistent world. The scale of the environments in TERA is massive, perhaps not quite as grand as GW2 but still - these environments are huge and have outstanding art assets.

Bottom line - the character animations, the hack n' slash combat with no targetting attacks, the great graphics at 80fps, the non-existent latency, the huge and at times majestic environments... everything really took me by surprise. This fps also don't drop much in heavily populated city environments. I never once saw my fps dip below 40 in the cities, I believe the game runs on Unreal Engine 3.

Sort of like rifts in Rift?

I've already pre-purchased GW2, and I'm not even an MMO player, so I'm definitely "all-in" for that game. But what seemed like a sure thing as "the next great MMO" prior to this weekend suddenly has had some doubt cast on it now that I've also tried TERA. GW2's promise is to radically change MMO combat and questing - the questing they've absolutely nailed but the combat is still a little "hotkey-ish" and you typically are targetting enemies the same way you do in other MMO's. The combat isn't as visceral as TERA's, TERA is pure action based - a la the spectacle fighters like God of War and Devil May Cry. I'm playing it on a 360 gamepad and it works brilliantly. The twist of course being that it's set in a persistent world with all the deep gameplay systems you'd expect from an MMO...etc.

So from what I can tell - TERA has dynamic combat but with traditional, derivative questing of the "kill 10 rats" variety. GW2 meanwhile has dynamic questing but a mixed combat system that uses both aimed and targeted attacks, but leans more towards the latter.

Looking forward to this weekend when the GW2 beta is out and of course TERA early-access begins. I'm getting both.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm currently subscribed to SWTOR but the only thing keeping me in the game is that is where the group of people I've been playing games with since EVE are currently residing, although most of us aren't putting in more than an hour or two a week now. After reading up on GW2 (I never played GW) I ended up pre-purchasing. I figure even if I'm not a huge fan of the game, I'll definitely get my $50 worth in play time.

That said, I also played the Tera beta on Sunday (after I got bored with the Diablo beta on Saturday). I'm definitely interested in the combat mechanics, although, similar to you, the old-school kill 10 rats quests are a bit disappointing. The difference is that killing those 10 rats was enjoyable, so the lack of innovation on the quest front is less noticeable.

The good news is that you don't have to preorder to keep your beta character. I can't find the post now, but I did read an official post on the forums indicating that they have no plans to wipe any characters from the open beta -- if you don't preorder, the characters will still exist, at least for a little while. They did say they may at a later date wipe the characters who don't subscribe, but you definitely don't need to preorder in order to keep your character if you plan on subscribing relatively soon.

My plan is to play GW2 this weekend, see if it's something I can see myself really getting into, and then make a decision on Tera.

I am checking out this game, it looks promising to me. I signed up to play the open beta too.

Open Beta is happening right now. It ends tonight at midnight PST. It's a huge download, over 30GB's in all. The game launches this Saturday for Pre-orders.

I've gotten to level 16 with a Warrior and level 12 with a Sorc. They are both super fun but the Warrior was a little harder to play. I actually died a couple times as Warrior, never even got below half health with the Sorc. You can just hang back and carpet bomb the mobs, if you're playing in a group Sorc gets even better.

So for a challenge I'd recommend staying away from the easier classes, Warrior is apparently the most difficult to play (short-range melee, light armor) but it wasn't hard, just some nice challenges mixed in. Sorc = easy mode.

I just tested out a couple of other character classes and I definitely think I'll be sticking with Warrior and Sorc when the game launches. I might consider switching out Sorc for another caster, Priest did look awesome when I ran through the prologue with one. Dunno, Sorc seems easier... for better or for worse. I don't want the game to feel like a cakewalk...etc. I know already that won't be the case with Warrior.

I played Anarchy a few years ago, up until just after noob island. it was quite fun, but it seriously needs an engine update--even 3 or 4 years ago it needed one.

Nothing will compare to GW2; most likely the future in MMO

I hope that was a joke. GW2 has nothing original in it, at all.

Its the same thing every MMO does.

The beta for them was nothing exciting or new that other MMO have not done in the past, its still questing "kill this many mobs" "go here and come back".

Warhammer online did the event quests to, that did not turn out well to. I'm sure people will flock to it because its free monthly, but still its the same thing as other MMO.
