UPDATE 07-01-07
So I called the police on that same day (see below update). An officer stopped by my apartment. Upon finding my phonecall was not a threat or a harassment in nature, he took his paperwork away and just said...

"Oh, that's some scam stuff. You just did the right thing by not revealing any further info."

Remember George Trout the Scammer said "Fine, I'll call your mom back!"?? It seems this crook was a scam afterall. I just needed to come to my senses after the initial scare.

This scum is just going around calling people up, sounding all professional with that lame, "Due to federal and legal obligations, I cannot tell you who I am, but please identify your SS#" BS.

The officer walked away with nothing. It's obvious the police didn't give a crap or had 'better' thing to do.

I still have George Trout's number. That scammer. Re-reading my OP really angers me that he's out there scot-free and scamming people left and right. Should I release the number to our forums? Can we collectively take a stance as the proud law-abiding citizens and get this guy??

Here's the number: 877-631-3713. LET'S GET HIM!! Please post your results if you do decide to call or look info up. His voicemail sounds very convincing with a very professional voice. "Hello this is George Trout, please leave a msg." But he's a blood-sucking, bottom-feeding scum!

[EDIT 06-28-07]
Just called the local police. An officer will be here soon and I'll be addressing to him in person.

I'll get straight to the point.

My mom calls and tells me this guy by the name of George Trout was asking for me. He was asking by my full legal name, which people rarely know, so my mom was concerned. She didn't give out my cell, but asked George to leave her his number. He did. It is an 1-800 number. I dial him from my cell using *67, which should disable my caller ID.

I call him back...

George: This call is being monitored, how can I help you?
Me: (WTF answers phone like this?) Is this George Trout and you were looking for me? This is Elias.
George: Yes.
Me: Yea, who is this?
George: George Trout. Is this [my legal name]?
Me: Yea, who is this??
George: George Trout. Just hold on a moment (I hear him typing or some sort).

-I get the sense he's buying time to trace my call or something despite my protest-

Me: Okay, I don't know who this is, but I gotta go.
George: Please hold on.
Me: I gotta go buddy

-I hang up-

Few minutes later I get a call back. It's him again.

George: I got you now (referring to my number probably). Mister [my legal name], I need you to verify if these last four digits of social security number XXXX matches yours.
Me: Who is THIS???
George: George Trout.
Me: Listen, a name doesn't mean anything. You can be John Smith or whatever. You have to identify yourself. Do I look stupid to you to just hand over information to you?
George: I cannot identify who I am due to legal and federal matters. I just need you to verify these last four digits of your social security number.
Me: I'm not giving out my Social, I'm not an idiot. Who the hell is this???
George: I'm not asking you to give me the social. Just verify if XXXX is indeed yours or not.
Me: I cannot either confirm or deny that the number is correct.
George: You have to sir, this is federally important.
Me: Yea okay buddy
George: Fine, I'll call your mom back!
(I hang up)

WTF IS THIS? Let's recap here... He addressed me by my full name and my mom by hers. He reached me by my mom's cell phone.

I have that 877 number to reach this George dude. I bet it's some sort of a spoofer number.

Has anyone experienced something like this? This dude pisses me off and I want to get him. What can I do - call police? Any ATOT members here who can help me out?

This is exciting!

Edit: Btw, tracing a phone call takes under a second, unlike in the movies.

Also, do you owe any money?

I'm almost positive a real federal agent wouldn't threaten to call your mom.

I'm almost positive a battery change in your sarcasm meter is needed.

Any fool can do that -- don't believe it. Everyone's full legal name and address is public record, any former addresses are usually attached, and it wouldn't be terribly difficult to get your hands on the last four digits of someone's SSN.

Dude, its a creditor. They always call family/friends acting like they know you and use your whole name because they dont know what you go by. You owe someone some money.

800 numbers will always get your phone number, regardless if you have an unlisted or call ID blocked number or not.

you owe anybody any money op?

You need to setup a live webcam stream when the cop arrives so we can see the action going down, then include an audio stream when the guy calls again. We could make an ATOT film.
