Time for a limited cease & desist so they quit calling you, everything from now on needs to be in writing.

Definitely check your credit reports to see if anything derogatory has hit yet. Also look for recent inquiries, if they bought your account they are likely watching your credit report.

If they have the wrong social security number they probably have the wrong person, it shouldn't be too hard to deal with. And on the bright side if they violate your request to not be contacted by phone it's money in your pocket ($500 a call, IIRC).

It's free to check your credit reports. I'm in the processing of refinancing my house, and the mortgage officer showed me a ding on my credit report that wasn't mine. I used www.annualcreditreport.com to see my report with Trans Union Credit, went through the dispute thing there, and it was removed the next day.

I could find out who is giving you internet service or something stupid like that and probably screw with you. All I would need to know other than your SSN is your name and address...easy. a collection agency would identify who they were. There would be no reason to hide the company name from you (if they did, how could they collect the debt from you???).

In regards to them saying it is of "grave federal importance" or some nonsense: An officer of the law would identify himself as such. And if it was some strange entity like the CIA or something, my guess is they would not need to verify your SS# and such.

My guess is its some scammer trying to get your money, I wouldn't sweat it.

Sure, it's work that needs done, no doubt. But that doesn't mean that many of them aren't Nazis about it.

If I was feeling mean, I could do a reverse lookup on that number to get your full name, address, and phone number.

With that info, I can do a more in depth search and also get your birth date and possibly your mother's maiden name. With THAT, I can now open credit cards and bank accounts in your name... and basically screw up your credit report for years.
