They've been doing that with the Nexus 6 and 6P, granted both can be had for much less thanks to sales.
And that's why unlike the Nexus 5, they're not exactly selling like hotcakes (Google nomenclature: "didn't perform as expected"). It only got a bit better after the price cuts.

Google never seems to learn. It like how they keep removing features, randomly killing things (Buzz, Groups) and making duplicate apps (Allo, Duo)

Frankly speaking, the state of mobile has deteriorated in the last few years. Android is the mess we all know and Apple's interfaces are stuck 2 years in the past. Maybe iOS 10 will change that and entice me but I don't expect it to. I'll just have to impotently fume at Google.

can anyone confirm hardware wise, if it will be any different or better than one plus 3 or axon 7? or too little info atm? I am in the market for at least 3 phones.

Like most phones this year, they'll practically be the same as the phones you mentioned. The XL will have a larger battery then the OP3 or AX7 while the regular model will have a battery similarly sized to the LG G5 (i.e., smaller than average).

Do you have sales figures of the Nexus 5, 5X or 6P? They haven't released sales figures since the Nexus 4...Nexus 5 was a great phone, but they sure did cut on corners, and it shows. The battery life was pretty bad, and the camera was bad. I still have and like mine, because it has the perfect footprint for a phone.

iOS 10 is alright. I've been running the public betas on my iPad. It's just not what I'm looking for in a phone. Like Nougat, I find iOS 10 to be a minor release. Don't get me started on Allo or Duo. IMO, it's a failure. No one on my contact list uses Duo, and Allo is nowhere to be found. If Google is really serious, they should just improve the products it already has rather than the take the Microsoft approach of rebranding.

No, because as you mentioned, they don't release numbers. But they did say that the 6P wasn't performing as expected and price cuts came very early on. Meanwhile, the Nexus 5 was sold through carriers (and cheaply) and I see random people using them even now so anecdotally it jives with the logic that it sold well. Google also used the phrase "sales winner" for it so that's a great contrast to the 6P.

No kidding. It's symbolic of the insanity in Google when Duo and Allo's features weren't added into Hangouts instead. They're absolutely clueless on how to make people want to use their software. Who's going to take the risk on it when there's a great chance the product will be randomly killed off a year later?

Been following the rumor mill on the new Pixel phones for a while. For the last month, leaked benchmarks have been showing that they'll be sporting a Snapdragon 820 but for the last week everyone has been saying it's the latest Snapdragon 821. And with an upgraded camera sensor from last year's Sony's, I'll probably upgrade from my Nexus 6p even though the price is going to be higher than last year. I take a lot of pictures in HDR and my 6p can bog down when I'm taking a bunch at the same time. Also, I'd like something a little smaller.

Found this site with the latest rumors - http://wccftech.com/google-pixel-roundup-specifications-features-snapdragon/

never plan ur purchases on rumors by wcftech.
This.
WCCftech is a PoS website for anything tech related. They're the Fudzilla from a decade ago. They report a lot of rumors, evidence, crap, BS, and click bait with nothing to backup. They're no different from BGR.

Android Police
The latest Google/Android rumors can be found here. There is no alternative. It's very likely that a family member for one of the employees there works for Google with all the Nexus/Pixel, Allo, Duo, and Android Nougat leaks. I wouldn't be surprised at all.

would be nice ... if the new pixel phones were at least up to par with samsung hardware. For some reason google phones even tho the software is updated all the time, the hardware is somewhat lack luster. I'm still enjoying the camera and features on my S6. It's never failed me. I don't really want to go back to a twisty metal thin phone. like the s4/s5. I think the glass shell makes it more of a solid phone.

Anyway, I'm still holding out to see what pixel has to offer in october, otherwise, I will upgrade with an S7Edge later when the price is more affordable.

I think the 6p would be an exception, for the price it was an amazing phone. But now its htc doing its thing, and i doubt they could pull off what huawei did last year.

The 5X and the 6P might go on a fire sale any day if the tradition is an indication.

But, on a second thought, it may be that the name change from the Nexus to Pixel is to make room for two devices in the same phone size categories. Update every other year, a Nexus year after a Pixel year, and so on? We know Google love to keep multiple things around.

$650 for the smaller 'cheaper' version? Better be PERFECT for that amount. Are they not aware of phones like the Moto X Pure that are nearly as good as flagships for 1/3 the price? The trend is towards cheaper phones, not more flagships that are nearly the same.

I just got a manufacturer refurbished Galaxy S7 for $420, I can't really think of what they could add to the S7 that would be worth $200-300 dollars.

Yup and the 6p would be an awesome phone to pick up on a fire sale.

I hear you, but, I'm waiting for the prices and test results probably be end of october sometime before I decide if I should keep my S6, or upgrade to any phone.

I've heard not to expect "flagship" performance with the new pixel phones. If it's not any better than the S7, then why upgrade, to me getting the latest firmware is important but, I think screen resolution and camera will always trump that. I'd be depressed if I sunk 700 bucks into a new phone just get crappier hardware than I already got.

I'd be super stoked if the new google phones beat out the S7 specs, but I wouldn't hold out on it. I'm still impressed with the 16MP sony cam on the S6. It could be a bit faster and take better pictures in low light. I've even thought about the i7, but, ish, don't really want to go down that road!

Might have to wait till next year till samsung and google can get their shit together.

I completely agree, it's totally insane, If indeed this is true. I don't think that rebranding from Nexus to Pixel will have the effect that Google wants. People are expecting cheaper phones from Google as "otherwise I would just buy a Samsung". Also, the release is just too late (IMO) in the phone launch lifecycle, especially for the smaller variant. The S7/HTC10/LG G5 and others have been out for ~5/6 months (Looking in Amazon, the S7 can be found for <550$, and the HTC for <600), and much cheaper phones like the Axon7 and OP3 have also been out for ~3 or so months.

Maybe I'm wrong though and the Pixel phones will be a great success, but if that's the pricing they're probably going to flop.

Does anyone know if there are any successful Pixel devices? The Chromebook Pixel 2 has just been cancelled. Was the first one a success? The Pixel C also received very lukewarm reviews (I've seen it being called half-baked multiple times).

The only real complaints I have seen in regards to the Pixel C are that Android just doesn't play all that well with tablets. The hardware seems to review quite well.

Factory refurb versus speculative retail sounds like a fair price comparison to me. At least wait until the price is officially revealed, and then use the same prices to make a comparison.

For crying out loud.

Htc got the stick for "daring" to charge $699 (practically $599) for the great HTC 10.

Google is going to get a lot of heat for pricing the Pixel at $650 when it's 6 months later AND lacks some things taken for granted in the flagships of 2016 like microSD

Some interesting notes....

"Google Nexus 2016" phones rumored specs include Snapdragon 821 processor (though others speculate it would be the 820 version), 12 MP back camera and 8 MP front camera, 2K screen for Pixel XL and 1080p for Pixel X, 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage for both phones. There is also a high probability of 3.5mm headphone jack inclusion and USB-C port for connectivity enhancements. The phones are said to be powered by Android 7.0 or Nougat.
It is not yet confirmed which between HTC and Huawei is contracted to manufacture of what phones, Google assured that they will never be the ones to build the Pixel variants themselves according to Tech Times. However, speculations suggest that HTC will have Pixel X and Huawei on Pixel XL.

With the rumored specs of "Google Nexus 2016" it is believed that the new smartphones will surpass the performance of Nexus 6P, HTC 10, LG G5 and Galaxy S7 which according to Tech Times the best android phones so far.
