The issue with that is that these companies are spending a lot of development on the design, meaning they're spending money on form over function. Like for instance them pushing ever thinner, which I hate, especially as it is preventing larger batteries. But I do wonder if it isn't in part because most people put a cover on their phone, but then that nullifies all the work they did on design.
I do agree that design is often over analyzed (for instance back when people were making a fuss about how Apple's ports and things lined up "just so" as some major advantage over Samsung), but I also think a lot of phones are focusing more on design and failing (I personally find the iPhone 6/6S to be ugly, the 7 in black looks ok but still looks ugly in the other colors).
And in this instance, I'd say the form potentially compromises function, as that big slab seems like it will present more of an issue (crack it and it could screw up the camera, most companies when doing glass back, separate the camera's glass from the rest). Will that likely be an actual issue? Probably not, but it still just seems baffling and doesn't appear to be any good reason they did this. Doing glass back is for purely for form and here it just looks ugly so why would you bother doing it?
I completely agree, it's totally insane, If indeed this is true. I don't think that rebranding from Nexus to Pixel will have the effect that Google wants. People are expecting cheaper phones from Google as "otherwise I would just buy a Samsung". Also, the release is just too late (IMO) in the phone launch lifecycle, especially for the smaller variant. The S7/HTC10/LG G5 and others have been out for ~5/6 months (Looking in Amazon, the S7 can be found for <550$, and the HTC for <600), and much cheaper phones like the Axon7 and OP3 have also been out for ~3 or so months.
Maybe I'm wrong though and the Pixel phones will be a great success, but if that's the pricing they're probably going to flop.
Does anyone know if there are any successful Pixel devices? The Chromebook Pixel 2 has just been cancelled. Was the first one a success? The Pixel C also received very lukewarm reviews (I've seen it being called half-baked multiple times).
Function and form should be linked and influence one and other. Form should serve function and function should fit the form.

So now that the event has kicked off, and we see what the pixel phones are all about, who's getting one?
I would like to see what you guys think when you get one. I'm kinda disappointed with the direction (and price) that Google went in, but if it's a good device, it may be worth the buy.
If they lose value quickly, I might consider a 128GB version for 600$, but I don't really believe such drastic price cuts are possible, so basically no Pixel for me.
I'm kind of disappointed there were no real small(er) flagships this year. The pixel is basically the smallest flagship all year. I guess the market for small phones is really small. I remember a time when the Galaxy S3 was considered "huge" .
I'm thinking about going for the regular one but my only concern is the battery life, I know the XL will have better battery life just due to the larger size but I wonder how much in reality.
Doesn't seem like enough of a difference to really matter. The XL will last maybe 10% longer when actually using it.Google’s touting 26 hours of battery life for voice calls and 13 hours for internet browsing for the Pixel, and 32 hours/14 hours respectively for the Pixel XL.
I bought the 6p on a $50 discount just a couple months after announcement. It'll need to be a bigger discount to get me to bite, but it's a good bet that we'll see some sort of sale before end of the yearI don't think Google will move that many at those prices, and they'll be discounted rather quickly, we shall see.
A bit disappointed ... for this price it should have started with 64Gigs... 32 is yesterdays standards. Nice to have 128 and worth it for 100 bucks more, funny how it's sold out. Maybe that should be the standard? I mean, if we are paying a premium price, let's get with the program? dunno, I'll be keeping my 32gig S6 for a bit longer, that One+3 is looking more tasty over what pixel is offering. Why couldn't google just offer a phone like that for a reasonable price? Oh well. I guess too many people that think nothing of 800 bucks for cell phone these days.
I could run out and buy 200 of these phones if I wanted to....... Just to say I could easily buy one. I've never paid over 400 bucks for a cell phone so, even I have my standards I guess. And should I break them for a google phone... That's hardly much better than my S6? Unlikely! and yes, I know I'm suppose to be justifying the software updates not the hardware. Still not worth it.
