The max and min resolutions on the SVGA is pretty irrelevant. From what I've heard, the only resolution you can run it at correctly is the native resolution of 1400x1100 or something similar to that. Everything else after that looks funny and does not look right. On my friend's Dell at that resolution, everything is SOO tiny. I prefer not to have to squint and be able to sit a couple feet back from the laptop and lose some desktop space than vice-versa. As for tax in NY, yes there is. I am in Rochester, NY and got slapped with like $80 worth of taxes.

Oh yeah, and if you think about it, a 14.1" LCD screen is pretty similar to a 15" CRT in terms of viewable. When I had a 15" back in the day, I dont think I ever ran it higher than 1024x768.

Change the screen to SXGA. you will regret it if you keep the xga with 15 inch.

trust me. I have seen 15 inch with xga and it's not good

Thanks, but what's the default resolution with SXGA? - I do not want to have everything ver small especially on a 15"

LCD screens basically have one default resolution; and that's what I'm asking too ;-) what is it?

And damn, there is tax in NY from staples!?!?! Ohhhh no!

Looks like the $200 coupon is only valid if the order is over $1499. Course
the system I configured ended up at $1498.

oh yeah, suggestion...I would change it to 128mb ram and just buy an extra 256 mb stick. If you choose 256 its actually 2 128mb sticks which leaves you no room for upgrading. You can choose the 256mb stick but its gonna cost you alot extra from staples.

Oh yeah, the default resolution is 1400x1050.

Here are the resolutions for XGA, SXGA, UXGA, etc. compliments of Dell, click me.

InGearX - That's a very nice configuration and a very low price as well. I would buy now esp since the $100 Staples rebate and $100 Staples coupon have been replaced with one $200 coupon code. Less rebate hassle is good. I would strongly recommend upgrading to the 15.0" SXGA display, it's NOT 1600x1200 (that's UXGA I believe).

15.0" SXGA = 1400x1050

I don't have perfect eyesight but I don't like my text/icons to be large (XGA) so the SXGA is the perfect balance for me. It's not super tiny small nor is it large.

I almost bought the Dell Inspiron 8200 with the ATI 9000 and UXGA
screen, plus the 3 years home service/complete care after rebates
and coupons for $2200. This is a much sweeter deal, though not as
nice visually

It takes 200pin sodimm ddr sticks. They run about $75 for 256mb. I'm guessing a 512mb stick of memory will run you close to $175. The best deal before was CC which had it for like $55 or 60 after rebate but that deal is long gone. I picked up a stick for $65 after rebate from CC. It is Cetron brand and has samsung memory chips and works great so far.

the $200 coupon does not require $1499 system. if you want to stack the $50 off $500 coupon then you need to configure a $1499+ system.

AFAIK there is no rebate on the internal floppy. You gotta get the external USB one from HPShopping (assuming, of course you want a floppy drive) and the rebate from them.

edit: removed typo

OK Im not very good at reading these posts... The staples rebate expired 11/27 -- does this mean the deal is over?? If not what are the rebates I need to get for the laptop to get this price today?

The deal is not dead. The "Update" is still going on. Basically there are no Staples rebates, just a HP one. There is a $200 instant discount from Staples. The deal was/is advertised in the current Sunday circular. You can also get XP Pro for like $25 or something IIRC after rebate(s?).

are there any reviews on this laptop? i'ml thinking about getting one and i'm pretty much limiting myself to something that staples carries (i have a $400 gift card to add to the deal).

I customized the lappy and added the things that were important to me (15in sxga, dvd/cdrw) and thought about upgrading it to a p4 1.7g, but then it seems like the price doesn't get so hot (say compared to a similarly equipped dell). i guess the only thing going for this deal is my $400 credit, but i'd hate to burn it just for the sake of using it.

Yeah I had a problem with that too. So my friend and I went up to the cash register and they just took the coupons off there. We used the $200 and $50 off coupon when ordering the laptop from the kiosk. Then the Windows XP coupon at the register

Here's my story:

Just scored a laptop for my friend...

$1149.00 (Price from the website right now) pentium 4 1.7ghz 512kb cache (NOT a typo, it's pentium 4, it says pentium 4-m 1.7ghz on the receipt) 128mb ram dvd 20gb 14.1" 2 batteries + free external usb floppy drive (after rebates)

$179.94 winxp pro upgrade

$69.99 5" black and white tv
_____________________________
$1398.93 subtotal
- $69.99 (coupon for free tv)
- $80.00 (coupon for winxp pro)
- $149.87(for some reason they took 12% off instead of the $100 off )
- $50.00(79183 coupon)
- $200.00(coupon for laptops over $999)
+ $70.05(tax)
______________________________
$919.12 total out the door
-$75.00 (winxp rebate)
-$100.00(hp rebate)
______________________________
$744.12
-$150.00 (approximately if my friend were to eBay winxp pro, probably won't happen)

$594.12 grand total

If you dont have a staples near by (and cant get the customer appreciation) its a better deal to do it at best buy. There is a compaq there with a similiar layout for 750 toshiba for 650... you dont get the sxga screen but I actually sompared them and the sxga looked worseo n all models... co0lors were washed out, and it wasnt bright at all. even afer playing with settings it lokked crappy. Just my personal experience. I have no idea why it was that way

What is this coupon/discount? How do you use coupons at the B&M? Anyhow, sounds like a hella deal! I'm deciding between this and the BB deal...

it was a price match for the exact same configuration from hpshopping.com.

if i'd seen this before staples closed yesterday, i would have purchased the exact same configuration. now that the $100 "customer appreciation" coupon no longer works, i'll just wait until the next dell home laptop blowout.
