Well,

i decided to go with the MSI board, + P4 1.6a + shipping = 235.95.

wow. not bad at all.

never woulda thunk the P4 would be price competitive with the AMD's. You gotta LOVE competition.

Ok, I haven't had time to really try anything yet... but I'm writing now on my 1.6a running at 2.4 Ghz on a p4b266-c with a 512 meg chip of crucial (infineon chips) at 2.5-3-3

Hopefully I can improve upon this.... but I haven't had time to even mess with it... just set fsb at 150 and here I am. Oh yeah... stock hsf with Arctic Silver II

Sorry... I have it set to 1.6, but asus probe reports it as 1.68. Asus probe also reports my cpu temp as 40 degrees also.... all the time, no matter what.... so I don't really trust it.

I haven't even tried lower voltage, once I get everything running the way I want, I'll start playing with the voltage and fsb some more but for now... I'm impressed.

I do have the usb issue though, I can't use my intellimouse unless I use the usb to ps2 converter, but my keyboard which is usb only seems to work fine.

Is that mobo, the -C version? or just the regular version? I think that there is a wayt around the USB problem on hte non C version usign the usb 2.0 ports.

OK,

The BUZZ on these 1.6a's is just getting crazy.... I had to order 2 of them! Plus the MSI 645 and OCZ 2400 memory... Hope to add 1 GHZ and OC around 2.6.

For those who bought the retail CPUs (with the HSF): is the fan QUIET? I'm running an XP 1800+ now with the quietest HSF I could find, and it's still noisy for me

I ordered my chip from mwave the day this thread was started...
I also use the stock hsf and to me it is quiet... but then again, there are a total of 8 fans in my case... so who'd hear the cpu fan?
That's 3 front case fans (intake), 3 rear case fans (exhaust + PS exhaust), 1 CPU hsf, and one video hsf...

Allright this is sorta OT, but then again the last 5 pages of this thread are kind of too.

Wouldn't Crucial, a division of Micron, use Micron chips? Anyone care to explain (did Micron buy infenion or something...)

Yeah, I was hoping they'd use the micron chips too, but there have been many occurences lately of infineon chips showing up on their ram.

And yeah, I know I don't need that many fans.... I got them back when I was overclocking my 700 to 1008 and was just being over-cautious... if the noise gets to me, I'll unplug a bunch of them and see what the story is...

By the way, I'm now running my ram at 150 Mhz CAS 2-2-2 with no problems so far... I've run Sandra with no issues, but what program should I use to test the stability of my ram at this speed?

try prime95...if your system runs errors during the torture test then it means it's not PERFECTLY stable...i got errors running at 2.2ghz so im back down to a fsb of 133 from 140

ICantAffordIt, run 3dmark2001 and play Q3, either of those two programs will show if there is instability, either locking up or exiting on their own.

I have the p4s333, got it last week, make sure you check the cpu:mem ratio in the bios, if you are going for a big overclock you should leave it at 1:1 for memory speed=bus speed

if you run at 100mhz fsb for the cpu and you have ddr333 ram then set the ratio to 3:5 for 166mhz ram clock (=333ddr)

Determining the ram speed is a little complicated,

take your fsb speed and divide it by the first number of the ratio then multiply that by the second number of the ratio,

example........

for a 3:5 memory ratio at 100mhz fsb divide 100 by 3 = 33 times 5 = 166 mhz memory speed,

also the available ratios change depending on the fsb, so if you are at say 150fsb cpu the ratios are 1:1 4:3 and 4:5 (i think)

so if your cpu can handle 150mhz fsb then leave your memory at 1:1 (if your memory can do 150mhz)

or to have the memory run at less than the cpu fsb set it to 4:3 in this case it works out like this, fsb is 150 divided by 4 = 37.5 times 3 = 112mhz memory speed

I have a 1.6 now but I have a 1.6a on the way, it wont be here until next monday though

I am REALLY hoping it will do 150mhz cpu fsb, that would be awesome to get it to 2.4ghz with 300mhz ddr memory speed

I'm embarrased to say I don't have Q3 and I'm on a dial-up connection so even 3dmark will have to wait a while.... where can I get prime95?

Edit: I found prime95, will try it out soon.

I also wanted to mention that upon a cold boot, my machine boots into the bios with the "the last time your machine started up it was not able to boot due to improper fsb" or something like that. But it boots fine everytime... not exactly sure why I get that message.

Some more results and a recap:
P4 1.6a retail from mwave
P4B266-C from newegg
512 Meg PC2100 from crucial (Infineon chips) 1 stick

fsb is at 150 Mhz
vcore is set at 1.6 but running closer to 1.64 - 1.67
DDR voltage is set at 2.7 volts
Ram Bios settings are cas 2-2-2 and turbo 1 mode

I ran prime95 for 2 hrs 44 min with no errors and no warnings (I know the readme says to run it for 24 hrs, but it got old).
And for what it's worth, I ran Sandra with the following results:
CPU Arithmetic Dhrystone: 4410 MIPS, Whetstone: 1254/2929
CPU Multimedia Integer: 9545, Floating-Point: 11623
Memory Bandwidth Int Buffered: 2227, Float Buffered: 2230

It seems this chip has more in it than 2.4 Ghz, but I'm not going to push it anymore... I think my goal now will be to see how low I can set the voltages and keep stability.

Interestingly, I got my ram from Crucial today (meanwhile newegg hasn't shipped yet... grr) and it has Samsung chips on it. I spoke with their online support and they said the demand was so high they have had to use other chips. Anyways, according to here: http://www.crucial.com/library/why_crucial.asp, they still say they use their own chips. So if I can't get as high (OCing) as I'd like, I'm just gonna demand a full refund. They can't tell if the memory speed has been pushed, can they? (I seem to remember that L1 cache in CPUs deteriorates at high FSBs over time, or something like that)

Got my stuff from Newegg already. Ordered Sat., got today Wed. Wish they wouldn't of shipped my ram in non static plastic bag. Ouch! Time will tell.
Edit: Express saver shipping from Cali to Midwest Update: I got a Costa Rico chip, gonna read forums and see if that made any diff on 2.1 or 2.4gig

I'd like to get in on some 1.6a overclocking action too, but I want to hold off at least until the Asus P4B266-E comes out (and maybe a few more newer boards).

QUESTION: Should I pick up a cpu now to increase my chances of getting a good overclocker (and hold onto it until I'm ready to build the system)? Is there a chance the 1.6a's for sale in a month will be less overclockable, or will it be okay to buy one later on?

Any opinions?

Installed my Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM today, 1536MB without a problem (Asus P4S333). Running the P4-1.6a at 152Mhz FSB right now (2432Mhz), solid!

Great post. Thanks a lot for the info. I can only afford one KingMax 2700 256MB memory. Will that work fine with this system. I also have some PC133 SDRAM from my old system. Will I be able to mix this with the DDR memory? Can DDR memory mix with different speed, size of the same type of memory if I buy more in the future?

TIA,

cpliu
